Grade 4 Term 2 English Learning Targets

Week Learning Targets

1-2 WEEKS 1 & 2 (29/1-9/2)

Vocabulary Targets:

Prank, delivered, hardware, embarrassed, vacation, cooperate, knowledge, rapid, struggle, stubborn

Reading/Theme Targets:

- Students can draw inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions and justify inferences with
evidence
- Students can identify main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and summarise them
- Students can describe how characters respond to major events and challenges

Writing Workshop Targets:

- Students can use temporal words to signal event order


- Students can gather relevant information from print and digital sources, take notes and categorise them

Speaking and Listening Targets:

- Students can show understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action
- Students can present the information in their research clearly

- Students can retell the characters, setting and events in the novel

3-4 Chinese New Year

5-8 WEEKS 5 - 8 (26/2-28/3) (UNIT ON CONFLICT RESOLUTION)

Vocabulary Targets:

Stomach, rotten, paused, gulped, favorite, maroon, congratulations, enclosed

Needy, plain, confused, unfortunately, groan, silent, scared, possible, powerful, flicked

Reading/Theme Targets:

- Students will be able to understand other’s perspectives


- Students will be able to identify and cope with their feelings
- Students will learn to build self-esteem
- Students will learn to be aware of their own reactions to conflict and whether they are helpful/harmful
- Students will understand how their actions can escalate or de-escalate a conflict
- Students learn to cope with conflict and recognize possible resolutions
- Students will explore win-win solutions during conflict with others
- Students will learn about anger management
- Students will learn to say ‘sorry’
- Students will be able to identify a firsthand account of an event and a secondhand account of the same event
- Students will be able to compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic and describe the
differences in focus and the information provided
- Students will be able to integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject
knowledgeably
- Students will be able to form and use the progressive verb tenses (e.g. I was walking, I am walking, I will be walking)

Writing Workshop Targets:

- Students will be able to write a balanced argument. (Topic – When I see a conflict, I need to resolve it immediately or other) based on
the following criteria:
- Students will be able to create a statement or question to draw attention to the issue

- Students will be able to write a short opening explaining the topic without stating their views yet
- Students will be able to formulate points ‘for’ and ‘against’ the topic
- Students will be able to write a conclusion for the writing inclusive of their views in the final paragraph

Speaking and Listening Targets:

- Students will be able to participate in role-plays relating to conflict resolution


- Students will be able to form a debate in small groups or as a class based on a topic related to the theme
9 & 10 Easter Holidays

11 - 14 WEEKS 11 - 14 (9/4-4/5) (Study of the novel ‘No Talking’)

Learning Targets:

Vocabulary Targets:

Explanation, simple, amazed, incredible, completely

Reading/Theme Targets:

- Students will be able to summarise and sequence the events/plot, explain how past events impact future events and identify the
theme
- Students will be able to describe the personality traits of characters from their thoughts, words and actions
- Students will be able to describe the interaction of characters, including relationships and how they change
- Students will be able to develop and demonstrate reading skills in response to text by drawing conclusions and inferring by referencing
textural evidence of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from text
- Students are able to identify whether the narrator of the story is first or third person

Writing Workshop Targets:

- Students will be able to write a realistic fiction piece of writing


- Students will participate in shared writing of a realistic fiction piece
- Students will write a realistic fiction by establishing a setting and situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters
- Students will be able to use narrative techniques such as dialogue, motivation and descriptions
- Students will be able to organize and event sequence that unfolds naturally to establish a beginning/middle/end
- Students will be able to follow a writing process in which they reread, revise and edit drafts
- Students will be able to use adverbs in writing
- Students will be able to use subject/verb agreement with 1st,2nd, 3rd person pronouns
- Students will be able to use prepositions correctly in a sentence

Speaking and Listening Targets:

- Students can show understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action
- Students can retell their realistic fiction writing to the class or in small groups
WEEKS 15 – 18 (7/5 – 1/6) (INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING UNIT ON SEVERE WEATHER AND NATURAL DISASTERS)

15 - 18 Vocabulary Targets:

Grabbed, giggle, neighbor, personal, relieved

Terribly, apologized, scribble, nonsense, cherish, characteristic, youth, theme, similar, thorough

Advise, opportunity, respond, reserve, praise, admire, hesitate, persuade, several, private

(Students will do a research project to study extreme weather and disasters. Each student will be given a topic and will present it at the end of the
unit. The goal is for students to learn and practice research skills that will be transferable to future research.)

Reading/Theme Targets:

- Students will learn about what causes earthquakes, volcanoes, and severe weather
- Students will learn about geographical regions of various events in nature (earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.)
- Students will learn about the effects and consequences of severe weather and natural disasters and explore how these may be
managed
- Students will identify human responsibility to nature
- Students will be able to identify appropriate safety procedures for natural disaster events.
- Students will deepen understanding of natural disasters through inquiry-based research.
- Students will be able to interpret and explain factual information presented graphically
- Students will be able to read to develop an understanding of media and its components by explaining text structures and graphics of a
web page
- Students will be able to read informational texts to explain events, procedures, ideas or concepts in a historical, scientific or technical
text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text

Writing Workshop Targets:

- Students will be able to create a poster or PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate understanding of their chosen topic (home-school
activity)
- Students will be able to write an informational report on one topic
- Students will be able to use graphs and charts in their writing
- Students will be able to introduce a topic clearly and group related information in paragraphs and sections, include formatting,
illustrations, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension
- Students will be able to develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations or other information and examples
related to the topic
- Students will be able to link ideas within categories of information using words and phrases
- Students will be able to use precise language and vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic
- Students will be able to provide a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation presented

Speaking and Listening Targets:

- Students will be able to speak clearly, audibly and to the point when presenting by paraphrasing portions of a text read aloud or
information presented in diverse media and formats
- Students will be able to use efficient presentation skills with available resources
- Students will be able to give a formal presentation to classmates using a variety of media speaking with expression and fluency
- Students will share new knowledge through jigsaw activity
