ENTRANCE TEST

GRADE XI (PHYSICS)
Objective
1. A heater coil is cut into two equal parts and only one part is used in the heater the heat
generated now will be ___________________. [1]
2. You are provided with a concave lens having focal length 15 cm. If it diminishes the image
by one-third, calculate the distance of the image from lens?
(a) 5 cm (c) 5 m
(b) 10 cm (d) 10 m [1]
3. Consider a simple circuit containing a battery and three identical incandescent bulbs A, B
and C. Bulb A is wired in parallel with bulb B and this combination is wired in series with
bulb C. What would happen to the brightness of the other two bulbs if bulb A were to burn
out?
(a) Only bulb B would get brighter.
(b) Both A and B would get brighter.
(c) Bulb B would get brighter and bulb C would get dimmer.
(d) There would be no change in the brightness of either bulb B or bulb C. [1]

4. A length of bare uniform resistance wire is included in the
circuit of Fig. Contact C can be moved to any position
along the resistance wire.
(a) On the axes of Figure, sketch the graph that relates the
current I in the circuit to the length l of the resistance
wire.

(b) Calculate the reading of ammeter when length l is zero.

5. A solenoid is held in a vertical position. The solenoid is connected to a sensitive, centre-
zero ammeter (galvanometer). A vertical bar magnet is held
stationary at position X just above the upper end of the solenoid
as shown in Fig.
(a) The magnet is released and it falls through the solenoid.
During the initial stage of the fall, the sensitive ammeter
shows a small deflection to the left.
Explain why the ammeter shows a deflection.

(b) The magnet passes the middle point of the solenoid and continues to fall. It reaches
position Y.
Describe and explain what is observed on the ammeter as the magnet falls from the
middle point of the solenoid to position Y.
