For the past two years, I have been pursuing a Master’s in Teaching with a dual
endorsement in elementary education and special education from the University of
Virginia. I have been able to put the incredible lessons about curriculum and instruction
that I learned in the classroom into practice with a student teaching internship at
Brownsville Elementary and a student teaching internship, that turned into a long-term
substitute position, at Jack Jouett Middle School.
At these placements, I was able to work with a team of teachers to design and
implement the curriculum pacing and instruction for our students, as well as differentiate
the material to reach all students. At Brownsville, I led Morning Meetings and enjoyed
implementing Responsive Classroom community building and social/emotional learning
activities with my students. I worked with a teaching team to implement new
curriculums for math, social studies, and science, helping to create new unit plans and
materials to reflect the innovative ideas that the school and county had adopted. At
Jouett, I taught a digital literacy class for struggling students, so that they could access
and use technology in a way that could transform their academic experience. I have
also collaboratively taught a 7th grade language arts class as well as targeted reading
instruction with evidence-based programs designed to reach struggling middle school
students, who needed growth in their areas of reading comprehension and fluency.
Through this specialized instruction, I was able to build such wonderful relationships
with my students that enhanced both of our experiences at our school.
Sincerely,
Katharine Werner
