1. In a Young’s experiment the distance d between slits is 0.

1mm and the perpendicular distance of

the screen from the slit plane is 50cm. Find the separation on the screen between maxima for
violet light (λ = 4000Å) and the red light (λ = 7000Å) in the first order.
2. Young’s experiment is performed with orange light (6057.8Å) from a krypton arc. If the fringes
are measured with a micrometer eyepiece at a distance 100cm from the double slit, it is found
that 25 of them occupy a distance of 12.87mm between centers. Show that the distance between
the centers of the two slits is 1.1297mm.
3. A double slit with a separation of 0.25mm between centers is illuminated with green light (5085.824Å)
from a cadmium-arc lamp. How far behind the slits must one go to measure the fringe separation
and find it to be 0.80mm between centers?

4. When a film of transparent material of r.i. = 1.2 is put behind one of the slits of a 2-slit Young’s
experiment, the 0-th order fringe moves to the position previously occupied by the 4-th order
bright fringe. Given that the wavelength of the light used is 5000Å, find the thickness of the film.
5. In Young’s double-slit experiment, a thin transparent sheet of some material (r.i. = 1.5) is
introduced in the path of one of the light beams. If the central fringe gets shifted by 0.25cm,
calculate the thickness of the sheet. It is given that the separation between the slits d = 0.1cm
and the distance from the slits to the screen is D = 50cm.
6. If one carries out the Young’s double-slit experiment using microwaves of wavelength 3cm, discuss
the nature of the fringe pattern if d = 0.1cm, 1cm and 4cm. given D = 100cm.

7. Consider Newton’s rings formed with the usual arrangement of a plano-convex lens places on a
plane glass plate. If the light used is of wavelength 6000Å, what is the change in thickness of the
air-film from the 3-rd to the 6-th bright fringe?
8. Suppose that in Newton’s ring arrangement, the incident light consists of two closely spaced
wavelengths λ1 = 5890Åand λ2 = 5896Å. The radius of curvature of the curved surface is 100cm.
Calculate the distance (from the point of contact of the plano convex lens and the plane glass
plate) at which the rings disappear.
9. In an experimental setup for producing Newton’s ring the radius of curvature of the plano-convex
lens R = 30cm. Find the diameter of the 2-nd bright ring produced by light of λ = 6500Å.
10. Plane waves of blue light, λ = 4340Å, fall on a single slit, then pass through a lens with a focal
length of 85.0cm. If the central band of the diffraction pattern on the screen has a width of
2.45mm, show that the width of the single slit is 0.3011mm.
11. A plane wave (λ = 5000Å) falls normally on a long narrow slit of width 0.5mm. Calculate the
angle of diffraction corresponding to the first three minima.

12. Consider a case of double-slit diffraction where slit width b = 8.8 × 10−3 cm, separation between
the slits d = 7.0 × 10−2 cm and the wavelength of light λ = 6.328 × 10−5 cm. Find the number
of interference minima occurring between the two diffraction minima on either side of the central
maximum.
13. Consider a set of two slits each of width b = 5 × 10−2 cm and separated by a distance d = 0.1cm,
illuminated by a monochromatic light of wavelength 6.328 × 10−5 cm. If a convex lens of focal
length 10cm is places beyond the the double-slit arrangement, calculate the positions of the
maxima inside the first diffraction minimum. [Ans. 0.0316mm, 0.094mm]
14. The two slits of a double-slit each have a width of 0.140mm and a distance between centers of
0.840mm. What orders are missing?
