Victorian Poetry

rd
3 year English majors and minors
-final grades-

! Only those students who have obtained a grade for both mid-term and final exam
will have a final grade for the course that will be indexed at the Secretary’s office.
Some of you have not written anything on the mid-term topic, which counts as no
mid-term. Some have shown up only for the mid-term, but not for the final, or vice-
versa. Those who do not have a final grade because of this reason will be indexed
‘absent’ and can take the exam again in fall (September) !

Nota bene!

 The Raven, though also quite gloomy and depressing, is a poem by E.A. Poe,
not T.S. Eliot.
 A person who writes poems is called a ‘poet’, not a ‘poetry’.
 ‘Victorian’, even though an adjective, is capitalized, just as American,
English, European, etc.
 Elizabeth Barrett Browning and John Clare are important Victorian poets,
but neither of them is, as many of you wrote, ‘the most prominent Victorian
(or even English!) poet’.
 ‘Sensitivity’ is the English equivalent for the Romanian ‘sensibilitate’, while
‘sensibility’ is translated by ‘ratiune’ in Romanian.
 A person of female gender is referred to by the pronoun ‘she’, a male person
by the pronoun ‘he’. The respective possessive pronouns are ‘her’ for female,
and ‘his’ for male. I understand that the modern world has blurred gender
barriers to a confusing extent, however, until grammar doesn’t decide to
keep up with ‘modernity’ we’ll have to stick with the above conventions.
 The last time I looked the poet up, his name was John Clare, not John Crane
(anyway, the name was written down on the blackboard, too, if my memory
doesn’t fail me – nu se aude bine-n casca, bat-o vina…). Crane is an
American Naturalist 20th century writer.
