Intended Audience 4th Grade

Instructional Objectives Students will………

● Revise and edit for organization,
grammar, and coherency

categorizing ideas and organizing
them into paragraphs
● 4.15(C) - revise drafts for coherence,
organization, use of simple and
compound sentences, and audience
● 4.15 (D) - edit drafts for grammar,
mechanics, and spelling
● 4.18(A) - create brief compositions
that

topic sentence

Length of time to present unit 4 weeks (1 hours/week in the library)

Brief Descriptions of Technologies KidBlog

KidBlog is a safe student blog site controlled


by the teacher. The teacher controls who can
view the blog site and review posts before
they are published to ensure that students
are using proper internet etiquette.

Storybird

Storybird is a website that allows students to

use illustrations to create their own


storybooks. The teacher can create a class
and assignments.

Writing Unit Lesson Plan

Unit: Writing

This unit is meant to be a supplement to what they are learning in class. It is a collaborative
effort between the librarian and the classroom teacher.

Week 1 Kid Blog Assignment

Week 1 Blog: You Want Me to Do What?

Students will write their first blog post about


how they feel about having to write. Students
should express whether they’re excited,
anxious, or indifferent about writing.

Each student must create a new word that


that describes how they feel about writing and
define it in their blog. They must also use
their new word in an example sentence.

Students must comment on at least two other


classmates blog posts.

Storybird

Week 1 Assignment: What is this Place?

Students will get familiar with the Storybird


website. I will show them how to complete an
assignment and some of the elements of the
website.

Small Groups (no more than 3): Students will


brainstorm ideas, characters, and settings for
their story. They can choose from the
following story starters to begin their
brainstorming process:
● Your grandma comes to town and
brings an unexpected surprise
● You are an astronaut that finds
something strange on the moon

Week 2 Kid Blog

Week 2 Blog: What are You Writing About?

At this point, students should know what


they’re writing about. Students will post their
written rough drafts on their blog with posting
option “draft”.

Classmates will be able to provide feedback


or suggestions.

Students must comment on at least 2 other


students blog posts.

Week 2 Assignment: I’m a Revising Machine

Students begin to revise and edit their rough


drafts.
Students must work collaboratively to help
each other.

Week 3 Kid Blog

Week 3 Blog: I’m a Writing Machine

Students will write about their experience


revising and editing last week and whether or
not they felt working in groups made the
process easier.

Students must comment on at least two other


students’ blog posts.

Week 3 Assignment: Keep it Up!

Students will begin creating their stories in


Storybird with assistance from the teacher if
needed.

Week 4 Kid Blog

Week 4 Blog: I’m an Author

Students will finish their stories this week.


They must blog about how they felt about
writing in week one and how they feel about
writing now in week four. They will share how
their view of writing has changed.

They must also provide the name of their


short story and tease the audience about the
plot line.

Students must respond to at least two


classmate’s blog posts.

Week 4 Assignment: Presentation

Students will finish their short stories this


week. Each group will present their story to
the class.
