The user guides created directly by the manufacture, Apple, in this case, provide the most in- depth
detail for operating a smart phone. The user guide created by a retailer, Verizon, provided a substantial
amount of information in a very brief prompt. The last user guide, created by an individual website,
assumed that the user was familiar with smart phones, and provided tips and tricks for operating the
device. For my guide, I will create a guide that assumes that the owner has never operated this device
before. In addition to this, I will ensure there are enough graphics that relate to the text.

Subject: Reflective Memo 2.3

This project required clear thinking to develop an elevator pitch, advertisement, and user guide.
To ensure success, I had to identify the genre conventions for my user guide- a simple and
informative guide. These include a simple and clean way to layout my instructions. I choose to
write using short statements and bullet points, rather than writing in a paragraph style. In
addition to this, I planned to use images that can be identified by anyone, regardless of age and
language.

I was able to follow these genre conventions for my user guide. They were initially designed
with my target audience in mind, so I did not have to change the conventions I used. Knowing y
target audience ahead of time was extremely beneficial. For example, if I had was creating a use
guide for millennials, I would have skipped the ‘basics’, like turning on a phone, and
covered topics that were more difficult.

For this project, my target was middle aged people who have never owned a smartphone. The
audience also owned a home and had access to electricity. Another thing I considered was my
audience may not have owned, or even operated, a smartphone before. I could not assume
that the audience had any previous knowledge before operating this device.

I choose to create a user guide using a PDF format. This format was the best choice for my
middle-aged audience. The print user guide can be used without access to a computer or
internet. In addition to this, the print model can be easily produced and distributed widely for
this audience. can be easily printed and used without access to a computer. If I had chosen to
create a web-based user guide, this would rely on the assumption that the user owned a
computer and may isolate users.

Graphics were essential for creating this user guide. Without graphics, the user guide is less
accessible to all. I used graphics to show what the parts were on the phone and the names of
the buttons. In addition to this, I used graphics to show pictures of the applications that the
user would be using. Furthermore, I also used pictures of actual iPhone screens when providing
instructions on how to perform a specific task. These pictures allowed me to add more clarity to
the examples in the user guide. I believe that the use of pictures helped my guide significantly.
I received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from my classmates. They pointed out steps
from the assignments I missed and provided feedback on how my guide looked. This type of feedback is
extremely valuable and greatly appreciated as it allows me to see from different perspectives. I also
received positive feedback from the IA. I was told that my project looked visually appealing and had
good content. I was also given simple edits to make to my project even better.

From the feedback I received, I did modify my assignment. I was missing some of the required tasks,
such as making and receiving a phone call and setting an alarm. In addition to this, I changed the style of
my writing to become one consistent voice. The last changes I made were grammatical and changed
word placement and punctuations.

The most challenging part of this sequence was creating the user guide. While it seems very simple to
write instructions for a phone, it was challenging for me to layout my thoughts. Initially I wrote the steps
as if it was going to be me who read it. I realized that I was missing key steps, like turning on the phone.
Once I reanalyzed the instructions, I had to assume that the audience had never seen a smartphone
before. This allowed for me to create an extremely thorough user guide.

The most surprising part of this sequence was the time it took me to develop this user guide. I expected
to be done with basic instructions in less than an hour. This was not the case- once I set down and
started focusing on the user guide, it took me a full day to create something I was proud of. I was also
surprised that I enjoyed creating an instruction manual. It was satisfying to create an organized
document that can be used by anybody.

If I had to do this project differently, I would start by creating a more solid base for research. I initially
wrote down notes on a piece of paper. After doing this entire project and searching for these note
countless times, I realized it would have been easier if they were saved to an Excel document.
