What impact does biotechnology have on
society?

One category of biotechnology is human health. Within that category, the development of new
drugs, gene therapy, and stem cell research are some common tasks being taken on. The impact
this has on society is vast. It allows for new cures to be developed and for the improvement of
quality of life for people with diseases. Another category of biotechnology is forensics and
security. In this branch, researchers use DNA fingerprinting to identify people at a crime scene,
prevent bioterrorism, and create treatments for diseases used in bioterrorist attacks. This
category of biotechnology helps keep society safe from bioterrorist attacks, and helps identify
criminals so they can be held accountable for their actions.
Careers in biotechnology

a. Research and development jobs involve the discovering a new product and developing it
all the way to the market. This keeps the biotech industry alive by always having a new
product to sell.
b. Manufacturing and services is the actual production of the product, when companies
mass produce the products.
c. Quality and regulatory affairs is the part of the process where the product is tested to
ensure it is manufactured and working correctly.
d. Sales and technical support workers advertise and sell the product.
e. Administrative and management can be defined in many ways depending on the
company, but every company needs a management team who is in charge of the whole
operation.

Clinical Research Associate

Being a clinical research associate appeals to

me the most because it involves the
development and administration of new drugs
that could help cure/prevent diseases. Plus it’s
a job that involves lots of traveling, and all I
want to do is travel. Clinical research
associate is also an occupation that would
allow me to work with people, and not just in
a lab.
