TExES Competencies

Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this
knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive
to their developmental characteristics and needs.
-The teacher understands what is developmentally appropriate for their students. They then take
that knowledge and apply it in lessons and activities. By doing so the students are more willing
to work and learn.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning
experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that
promote all students’ learning.
-The teacher learns more about her students throughout the year. He or she create activities with
differentiation to accommodate learning levels. This captures not only a few students attention
but it captures them all. Therefore, making the class successful.

Competency 003: The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent
instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.
-The teacher creates lessons that will apply to the objective being taught. Based on the goals of
the student the teacher creates activities that will complete those goals. This helps the student
gain knowledge and grow.

Competency 004: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student
learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and
appropriate assessments.
-The teacher understands their students and their needs. They know what kind of impact certain
lessons will have on certain students. They know what their students are capable of and plan
effectively and provide precise instruction so the student is successful.

Competency 005: The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning,
equity and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment
that is safe and productive.
-The teacher provides a student friendly environment in the classroom. He or she lets the class
know what is expected of the students. They make the classroom feel safe and welcoming. A
chaotic classroom doesn’t create successful students. A controlled environment makes students
calm and more open to learning.

Competency 006: The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive
learning environment and for managing student behavior.
-The teacher provides an organized classroom. They also provide discipline and order in the
classroom so that the students know first-hand the rules of the classroom. By doing this they
keep their students under control. When students are controlled they listen more and do the work
that is expected of them.

Competency 007: The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for
communicating effectively in varied teaching and learning contexts.
-The learning styles of students differ with each child. The teacher has to figure out different
ways to communicate with students. I know this by being an interpreter for a deaf student. My
teacher has to use hand gestures with my student so that she will understand her. Not only does
she do it with her she does it with everyone in the class. The other students catch on to the non-
verbal ques and hand gestures.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in
the learning process.
-The teacher thoroughly explains the instructions for the activity. They must be prepared and
supply the necessary tools to have students achieve their learning goals. Clear and
developmentally appreciate instructions provide the student with the materials to succeed.

Competency 009: The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize,
deliver and evaluate instruction for all students.
-The teacher thinks of different ways to teach the students the objective. Such as, using a
promethean board or an iPad to aide in lessons taught. These different materials grasp the
student’s attention more. The era we are in is based solely on technology, so it’s best to use
materials that the kids use every day outside of school. This is so that they are familiar and
comfortable with it.

Competency 010: The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides
students with timely, high-quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all
students.
-Teacher is aware of all their students learning goals and how she or he should achieve them.
They give feedback to the student and ask questions to make sure they understand the material
presented to them. The teachers also do state testing to see where the students are and what else
needs to be done to make them successful.

Competency 011: The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s
education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.
-This competency states how important it is for a teacher to communicate with students families.
Each student is unique in their own way and by the teacher being able to get to know the family
and where they come from. The teacher can adjust the classroom and curriculum to the student’s
needs. This also brings the parents or legal guardians to light on their child’s progress and
conduct.

Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively
interacting with other members of the educational community and participating in various types
of professional activities.
-Teachers interact with other teachers and other professionals throughout the day. These teachers
are also required to take workshops that help better their knowledge and give them more ideas
for the classroom. Not just workshops do they attend by they attend other district events that
need volunteers to work for it. By them doing all these activities they boost their skill levels;
making them a great teacher.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for
educators and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.
-Teachers are required to follow The Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
Which lately by watching the news, it seems teachers have neglected to do so. The Code of
Ethics is guidelines that teachers follow to save their necks. A big rule that teachers must follow
is confidentiality. I understand this first hand when I am asked about my student. I am not
allowed to give out any information on her. I can’t even say her name. I’m glad that we have
these codes and ethics to protect not only me but my student as well.
