Materials/Resources:
● Online Version of “Captain America” Comic #1 (1941)
● Excerpts from:
○ American Born Chinese
○ Ceremony
○ The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
Learning Activities:
Initiation:
● 20 min
○ Students will journal for 10 minutes on the questions “what makes a
hero?” and “what does a uniquely American hero look like?”
○ For the next ten minutes, students will write on the second prompt: “What
makes Huck Finn an American Hero?”
Lesson Development:
● 5 min
○ Students will share their thoughts with a neighbor.
● 20 min
○ Students will skim through “Captain America” in pairs, taking notes on
how Captain America is characterized as the “all American hero.”
● 10 min
○ Students will compare Captain America’s qualities to Huck’s in pairs.
What makes them similar? Different? Students will write this down.
● 5 min.
○ As a group, we will share the qualities each pair came up with and narrow
them down to a few main characteristics between the two.
● 25 min
○ Students will get into 6 groups. Each group will get a section of one of the
3 novels.
■ There will be two different excerpts from each book, so no group
should have the same excerpt.
○ Groups will read their sections, creating a summary of what they’ve read
and noticing and writing what makes the characters a part of the
“American Identity.”
■ Do they share any similar characteristics as Cap? As Huck?
■ Why do you think these kinds of stories aren’t usually included in
the literary canon?
■ Students will share their findings with the class tomorrow.
Closure:
● 5 min
○ I will remind students to fill out their maps as they read as well as the
pages to be read tonight. I will ask students to think about Huck as an
American Hero archetype as they read tonight.
○ I will hand out the Final Assignment sheet and ask students to read it
tonight, come back tomorrow with questions.
