To whom it may concern:

This year I have had the pleasure of serving Albemarle County Public Schools as both a long-
term substitute teacher and VAAP teaching assistant. These experiences, along with those
gained from the Master’s in Teaching program at the Curry School of Education make me a
competitive candidate for the teaching positioning at your school. I am confident that you will
find my passion for education, my commitment to professional development, and my
enthusiasm for community involvement an asset to your school division.

The two long-term substitute jobs, one in a Preschool Special Education classroom and the
other in an A-Based classroom taught me much about special education and the art of
differential learning. I also gained confidence in my abilities as a teacher to problem solve and
have flexibility in my lesson plans. These experiences also taught me the importance of
inclusion for Special Education students. In addition to working as a long-term substitute
teacher, I have also had the great pleasure of being a homebound teacher for a vivacious, ESL,
kindergarten student and a FIC tutor to a very inquisitive third grader. These two positions
gave me a chance to focus more on my passion, which is reading instruction, and gave me a
chance to improve my classroom management skills.

As a Dyslexic, I have always been very interested in how the world of reading education is
changing. Before being admitted by the Curry School of Education, I received training to
become an Orton-Gillingham reading tutor. I went on to take another certification course and
was provided the opportunity to work under the reading specialist at my own elementary
school. These were very helpful in all the positions I have held this past year and gave me a
wealth of ideas to pull from when approaching unique learning challenges.

Over the course of the past five years, I have learned that my strengths lie in connecting with
students and building their confidence in the educational arena. From drawing on my own
academic struggles I have been able to approach students in a way that gives me a unique
ability to find alternate routes for knowledge acquisition and student engagement.

I would be very honored to be considered for this teaching position. Thank you for your time
and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Lydia Day
