Scenarios, realities & challenges of forest

management

Very poor soil and water condition. Identify agricultural
engineering works that may aid forestry rehabilitation effort.
Abandoned grazing lands are too difficult to
rehabilitate. Should we give up on these areas?
In Nueva Vizcaya, agriculture causes serious forest destruction.
How could increased productivity of lowland farms help abate
expansion of agriculture into forestland?
In Nueva Vizcaya, agriculture remains to be a major cause of
forest loss? Food vs. forest: forest is likely at the losing end?

cultivation in Ambaguio (photo credit: Samuel Galate)
Suggest substitute materials considering cost effectiveness
(long-term), availability, continuity of supplies, reusability …
Forest rehabilitation projects build roads, or roads are
built for communities. Should the government allow
more roads to be built in forestlands?
In Nueva Vizcaya, rice paddies have conquered the hillsides; sometimes
close to the peak for as long as there is water, wet rice cultivation is
possible. Is this situation connected to decreasing rice productivity in the
lowland?
Can we equip farmers or upland dwellers with fire
fighting equipment to combat forest fire?
Forest fire destroys forest edge.
The region heavily relies on planted trees, principally gmelina
and mahogany, for its wood need? Some people don’t like
exotics. What about you?
Instead of nursery grown seedlings, wildlings are collected for
greening or reforestation projects …
Suggest design with good touch of an agricultural engineer. Air
circulation, lighting and temperature are critical factors for seedling
growth and survival.
Increased wood yield must be a priority objective of forest
management. In engineer’s point of view, suggest ways of
enhancing wood yield of planted trees.
Clearly, tree management techniques and silviculture
must play a key role .
Through various tenurial instruments forest lands are placed into formal
forest management where primary responsibilities are assigned to
people’s organizations (PO). In your place, are there POs engaged in
forest management? What are their projects?
Should the government or local authorities relax on
apprehending timber poaching for “household” consumption?
Small or Large?
Large or small?
Small AND Large vs. keeping the landscape intact.
How can we really reduce waste at the source (e.g.,
houses, offices, schools)? Suggest fabricated structure.
Hope springs from the youth . What technical
competencies must they possess? Consider potential
contributions of agricultural engineers.
Enhancement activity
• Select two photos (some are in group) and
write reflection essays on each of the photos.
• Contribute photographs (optional but grade
might be encouraging).
– PPT slides
– When and where taken [write in Notes Pane]; if
possible, geotagged
– Subject
– Caption
– Clear, high-resolution
– Notes or questions relating to forest management
scenarios
• Due two weeks from now
