About Science Weekly Five!

Science Weekly Five is a program easy to implement and
change to meet the needs of you and your students. This
program is great for grades 3-4, but could work at other grade
levels as well! The acAviAes can be completed in as liSle as 15
minutes each day once your rouAnes are in place.

The preparaAon is very simple and is a great way to supplement
your science program. With the stress added to other subjects
with standardized tesAng and NCLB, The Science Weekly Five is
a great way to cover all standards in depth and keep students
interested and moAvated.

It’s all about staAons! The staAons are the same each week;
you just trade out materials for the concept you choose.

Sta'on 1- Read and Comprehend (short reading passage with
paraphrasing acAvity and sentence stem)
Sta'on 2- Explore! (Hands-on acAvity to create a model or
diagram)
Sta'on 3- Organize It! (Using a graphic organizer or diagram to
help students organize abstract concepts in a concrete, visual
way)
Sta'on 4- Center AcAvity (AcAvity to further explore a concept)
Sta'on 5- Vocabulary (Cut and paste matching of terms and
definiAons and a Vocabulary Four Square for one important
term)

Setting Up!

1. Print and laminate the Science Weekly Five Signs and Science Weekly
Five DirecAons. The signs help establish an organized climate for the
acAvity and the direcAons will be the same for each acAvity for all of the
weeks. Use a folder, baggie, or basket for each staAon to contain all of the
materials. Different color baskets clearly labeled with the staAon name
work nicely if you don't have different areas of the room to store the
materials.

2. Print off the lesson of your choice and follow the direcAons on the
Teacher Resource Page to prepare the materials. The preparaAon is
always as easy as possible and requires only basic supplies.

3. Each student gets a Student Recording Packet for the weekly acAvity.
Either have students glue the Student Recording Packets in their science
journals or keep them in folders. There are two types of Student
Recording Packets included. The first can be folded into a booklet and
stapled. The second can be copied as is, front and back, then stapled.

4. On the first day of the week, have students glue their Student Recording
Packet in their science journals. They need to fill in the Atle and complete
the K(Know) and W(What I Want to Know) on the cover of their Packet
before going to a staAon. This should take about 5 minutes.

5. Group students and complete the acAviAes.

6. Aher compleAng the last acAvity, give students about 5 minutes to
complete the last page of their Student Recording Packet with what they
learned and complete the “L” of their KWL.

Tips and Tricks!

Grouping Students
You may want to create the groups yourself at first unAl the
students get used to it. You can also have cards the students
draw from a "SorAng Hat" that have the different acAviAes listed
in a different order, one acAvity per day. There are 5 staAons, so
for a class of 25, you should have 5 students per group. I ran 5
copies and laminated Weekly RouAne Bookmarks and the
students draw one each week to know what order they will go in.

Establishing a Climate of Learning
Excellent management is key to maximizing Ame on task.
Chances are the students will enjoy the acAviAes, but they do
need to be taught how you want them completed. Rules or
norms for the classroom during Weekly Five Ame will help
students understand the expectaAons.

What do I do while the students are working?
I see the teacher's role as a facilitator of learning. The acAviAes
should be completed without teacher assistance for the most
part. You can pull a small group during this Ame, walk around and
supervise student work, or work with students in a staAon you
think your students may find more challenging. The nice thing is
that you have many choices!

Management Tips!

Here are some of the things I do to help manage staAon Ame:
1. SomeAmes I have a parent volunteer that comes in to help. I have him help with
the staAon that requires the most support.
2. Vocabulary staAon and Reading staAon require very liSle support because it is the
exact same rouAne each week. That way, it's easier to supervise the other 3 groups.
3. I have a folder for each secAon with the laminated sign, laminated direcAons, and
any student pages inside. I keep them each in 5 different parts of the room that
easily accommodate the acAvity.
4. I randomly group the students for this because I group them by abiliAes, needs,
and interests most of the Ame. I use the Grouping Bookmarks.
5. I start each class with Science Weekly Five, so no Ame is wasted. They come in,
put down their things, and immediately get to work.
6. I set a large Amer for 15 minutes and give a 5 minute warning.
7. I keep a lot of resources and books on the topic around in case the students need
to look something up. They can also use any of their own personal resources, notes,
or journals.
8. I encourage group work and collaboraAon, but the conversaAons must be two
things: on topic and using a whisper.
9. I insist that they read the direcAons and discuss with their group before asking me
a quesAon about what to do. I rarely get any quesAons about what is expected.
10. I have cute sAckers that I give out for excellent work. Some of the kids really do
quality work and they like the recogniAon for it.
11. For grading, I assess the general quality and thought that went into creaAng 1 or
2 of the weeks for each 6 weeks. I do not grade all of them because they are sAll in
the learning process when compleAng them.
12. Occasionally, I have them trade Student Recording Packets and give each other
“glows” and “grows” on their work.
13. Have fun with it! Kids love acAviAes, doing cut and paste, and learning!
14. I assign a student to be the "StaAon Checker" that makes sure everything it put
where it belongs at the end of staAon Ame.
15. I have a voice monitor for each group that makes sure the volume level is
appropriate.
16. When a group finishes their staAon early, they clean up and silently increase the
quality of their Student Recording Packets at their seats.
