1. This document has 3 parts;

a. Part 1 is Sample Questions and Solutions for your reference
b. Part 2 is a Solution Writing Assignment
c. Part 3 is a Question Creation Assignment
2. We are attaching a sample solution for your reference so that you
understand the kind of explanation expected from you.
3. While writing solutions please try to provide step by step solutions being as
elaborate as possible so that anyone can understand the solution. Also write
missing options a), b), c) and d) as per your judgement in part 2.
4. Subsequently, you have to create 4 original questions at the same level of
difficulty. Provide options, answers and solutions for each question.
5. Please note that created questions should not be copied from anywhere else,
otherwise your candidature would be rejected.

PART 1: Sample Solutions

Q – 1. A steel penstock 60 cm in diameter has thickness of 1.2 cm. The modulus of
elasticity of the shell material is 2.1 × 105 N/mm2 and the volume modulus of elasticity
of water is 2.1 × 103 N/mm2. The Pipe is designed to discharge water at a mean velocity
2.1 m/s. Determine the difference of water hammer pressure rise in MPa due to sudden
closure in 2 cases:
a) By considering elasticity of pipe material.
b) Neglecting elasticity of pipe material.

Ans. Range: 0.54 to 0.58

Solution:
Case 1
By neglecting elasticity of pipe
𝑘 2.1 × 103 × 106 𝑚
𝐶=√ =√ ⇒ 1449.14
𝜌 1000 𝑠𝑒𝑐
Water hammer pressure rise
⇒ – ρ × C × ΔV
⇒ - 1000 × 1449.14 x (0-2.1)
⇒ 3.04 MPa

Case 2
By considering elasticity of pipe

𝑘 1
𝐶=√ [ ]
𝜌 1 + (𝐷) ( 𝑘 )

2
2.1 × 109 1
⇒√ [ ]
1000 60 2.1 × 103
1 + (1.2) ( )
2.1 × 105
⇒ 1183.22 m/sec
Water hammer pressure rise
⇒ - ρ × C × ΔV
= - 1000 × 1183.22 × (0 – 2.1)
= 2.48 MPa
Difference in pressure rise in 2 cases = 3.01 – 2.48 = 0.56 MPa

Q – 2. The kinetic indeterminacy of the structure shown below is ……………… (Consider

axial deformation of members)

Ans Range: 23-23

Solution:
Dk = 3j – re + rr – nr
Where,
j = No. of joints
re = No. of external reactions
rr = Σ(mj – 1), where mj is number of member connecting with j number of joints.
nr = no. of rigid members

Axial deformation considered, so nr = 0

rr = rr1 + rr2
= (2 – 1) + (4 – 1) = 4
Dk = 3j – re + rr – nr
=3×9–8+4–0
= 27 – 4 = 23

Q – 3. A rectangular channel 5.2 m wide has a discharge of 10.0 m3/sec at a velocity of

1.25 m/s. At a certain section the bed width is reduced to 3.0 m through a smooth
transition. A smooth flat hump is to be built in this contracted section to cause critical
flow for flow measurement purposes. The height of the hump necessary for this purpose
is …………... m. (Assume no loss of energy at the transition)
Ans Range: 0.051-0.057 m
Solution:
Open channel
B = 5.2 m
Q = 10m3/sec
V = 1.25 m/sec

At section 1) – 1)
𝑉12
𝐸1 = 𝑦1 +

Q 10
y1 = = = 1.538 m
BV1 5.2 × 1.25
1.252
𝐸1 = 1.538 + = 1.617
2 × 9.81
𝑉1 1.25
𝐹𝑟1 = 𝑔𝑦 = < 1 (Sub – critical flow)
√ 1 √9.81×1.538

At section 2 – 2 – flow is critical

𝑞2 3
𝑦2𝑐 = ( )
𝑔
𝑄 10
𝑞= = = 3.33
𝐵2 3
Hence 𝑦2𝑐 = 1.042𝑚, 𝐸2 𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 1.563𝑚
Now E1 = E2 + Δz
Δz = E1 – E2 = 0.054
