II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):

Given a leveled book that contains that weeks spelling words, students will understand the main topic of a
story by labeling and drawing a tree trunk to symbolize the main idea of the text.

IV.​ ​INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activity):

​Pictures will be displayed that include several details that work together to depict a particular event or
activity (ie. a picture of a family in the woods setting up a tent). Students will be asked to assess the details
in the pictures and determine the main idea of the illustration.

Purpose: ​By the end of the activity you will be more familiar with what a main topic/idea is as well as
practice with spelling and reviewing spelling words for the week. You will see that details help
determine what the main idea of a topic might be as well as differentiate between the two.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology With Student Activities):
1. Define main idea/topic
T​: Provide definition and example of main idea
​T​: A main idea is : what a story is mostly about
​S​: Students will tell their partner what the definition of a main idea is
2. Difference between main idea and details
T: ​Teacher will provide pictures of events/activities ( placed on students desks)
T: ​Teacher will demonstrate with one picture (orally walking through thought process)
and pointing out details noticed to determine the activity taking place
S: ​Students will determine the main topic of their picture
3. Share topics
T: ​Teacher will share her picture
T: ​My picture has woods, a tent, a family, fire, sleeping bags. My pictures main topic is camping
​ S: ​Students will share with the class the topics of their picture
4. Leveled books
T: ​Teacher will provide leveled books
T: ​Teacher will ask students to read their book and determine its main topic with a partner
S: ​Students will work together to define main topic
5. Tree Trunk
T: ​Teacher will ask students to draw and label a tree trunk
T:​ Teacher will reference instructional activity for students clarification of main idea/topic
S: ​Students will draw and label a tree trunk with the main topic of their leveled book

Students will draw and label a tree trunk with the main topic they determined of their leveled book.

Pictures of activities/events, leveled books, pencils, blank paper, crayons

Formative ​(During Lesson):
During Step 3, I will observe students responses to the topics of pictures provided. Gauging whether
students are able to identify them.
Within the application activity, I will walk around and observe what main topics students are providing for
their leveled book.
Summative ​(at the end of the lesson):
I will collect students tree trunk drawings with labels included.

Accommodations​:
Input- Students may use graphic organizer to help visualize main topic (with drawings or writing)

Modifications​:
Difficulty- Provide student(s) with lower leveled books
