DESIGN REPORT

1. Objective

This document details the study performed to ensure that the station light and power
transformers and stand-by generator are sufficient for powering all the AC components in
the PSE&G Essex Switching Station.

2. Design Criteria

The AC station power for the Essex Switching station shall originate from 13.8 kV tertiary
windings of transformers 1TRH and 2TRH. Each tertiary winding shall supply a 13.8-
208Y/120 V liquid-filled transformer. The station also shall contain a 500 kW (625 kVA)
stand-by diesel generator.

Both 750 kVA transformers and the 500 kW generator shall supply a line-up of 2000 A, 208
V AC switchgear. The AC switchgear then supplies power to two AC switchboards in the
control room that are then connected to all the AC loads in the switching station. All AC
switchgear and switchboard drawings can be seen in Appendix A.

3. Calculation Basis

To determine if a sufficient amount of power can be supplied by the SL&P transformers and
generator all AC loads were determined for the switching station. These loads were taken
from vendor data provided for the equipment in the station, where available. If accurate AC
loading was not provided, then 90% of the device’s main of the circuit breaker rating was
used in its place.

Two worst-case scenarios developed and compared to each other. The highest loading case
was chosen for the final calculations. The two scenarios utilized were a warm evening and a
cold evening, since air conditioning and heating don’t run concurrently. Note: some
components require 208 V three-phase AC power while others use single-phase 120 V or
208 V. To determine station loading, currents were tracked on a phase-by-phase basis with
the largest sum utilized to ascertain the overall loading.

3.1 Transformers 1TRH and 2TRH

The transformer consist of three-phase loads (pumps and fans) and single-phase, 120
V loads. All loading was taken from the Hyundai vendor drawings which listed
component power usage for the fans, pumps and heaters and lights. 180 VA was
used for the receptacle. Heater loads were included for the cold evening case.

3.2 Circuit Breakers

The circuit breakers consist of single-phase, 120 VAC loads apart from one three-
phase receptacle. Actual component loading was not provided. 180 VA was used
for the receptacle with 60 W for the light. Heater load was inserted at 90% of the
heater circuit breaker rating (15 A) for the cold evening case. The three-phase
receptacle load was not included. For the purpose of these calculations, we assumed
that four breakers were in spring-charge mode.

3.3 Building HVAC

The building HVAC load data were taken from information provided by the
supplier.

3.4 Building Heating

The building heating load data were from information provided by the supplier.

3.5 Exterior Lighting

Switchyard lighting loads were calculated based on the lighting circuit plan.

3.6 Building Loads (lighting, receptacles, battery chargers, exhaust fans, etc.)

All remaining building loads were provided on a circuit-by-circuit basis by the

building supplier.

3.7 Existing Loads

The number and sizing of existing loads is still being formulated. A value of 100 A
was utilized for these calculations.

Analysis

The AC loads were calculated using all the equipment attached to the AC switchboards. The
load profiles can be found in Part 2 of this report.

4. Summary of Results and Conclusions

It was calculated that the maximum amount of AC power consumed by Essex Switching
Station is 270 kW. The two SL&P transformers are rated at 750 kVA so either transformer
is capable of handling the full load. If both SL&P transformers are lost, the standby
generator will be started to power the station. The diesel generator is rated at 500 kW with a
power factor of 0.8, which is more than sufficient in handling all the AC power needs of the
Essex Switching Station.
