Department of Communication Facts for Incoming Students

UNDERGRADUATE

Communication Studies Major


•! In 2016 communication studies accounted for 19 percent of the department with
130 students.
•! Students take 43 credit hours of communication studies courses out of the 120
required to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree.
•! Upper-level communication studies classes average around 24 students per class.
•! The student to faulty ratio for communication studies classes is 17-to-1.
•! The communication studies program consists of 36 faculty members.
•! Common careers of students majoring in communication studies include areas
such as government, healthcare, education, entertainment and law.
•! Students will develop skills in critical thinking, adaptability, teamwork, conflict
and relationship management and effective message creation.
•! Communication studies majors study the practices and reasons behind how people
interact with others and their surroundings.

Multimedia Journalism Major


•! In 2016 multimedia journalism majors accounted for 38 percent of the department
with 261 students.
•! Forty-three of the 120 required hours consist of multimedia journalism courses.
•! As of 2017 a sports media and analytics concentration is available and includes 15
credit hours of related courses.
•! The multimedia journalism major is geared to prepare students for working in
broadcast journalism and news-media careers.
•! Students study methods and publishing across various mediums of print and
digital media.
•! Multimedia journalism courses also include classes centered around law, history
and ethics.
•! The Multimedia Center, located in the Moss Arts Center, is a studio with three
professional cameras that allow students to practice working in a digital
newsroom.

Public Relations Major
•! In 2016 public relations accounted for 43 percent of the department with 301
students.
•! Students take 45 credit hours of public relations courses out of the 120 required
hours.
•! The student to faulty ratio for public relations classes is 17-to-1.
•! The public relations curriculum is one of 39 in the nation to be certified by the
Public Relations Society of America.
•! A public relations accreditation test is available for students to take and 99
percent of students pass it.
•! Students studying public relations focus on how to create relationships between
companies and their publics.
•! Common job areas of public relations include government agencies, nonprofits,
private companies and entertainment.
•! Public relations jobs are on the rise and will grow by 6 percent through 2024
according to the United States Department of Labor.

Communication Minor
•! The communication minor consists of 18 credit hours of communication courses
•! The minor is non-restrictive and open to all students except communication
majors.
•! Minor classes are a combination of public relations, media studies and
communication courses.
•! Students must meet and maintain a GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for the minor.

GRADUATE

Master of Arts in Communication


•! A total of 33 credit hours are required to receive a master’s degree in
communication.
•! Nine of the 33 hours include core communication classes.
•! The graduate curriculum integrates theoretical and methodological approaches to
communication with an emphasis on research in strategic communication, public
advocacy and policy, media effects and issues.
•! Graduate faculty member’s strengths focus on audiences, technology, media
policy and the contexts surrounding artifacts.
•! To receive a master’s in communication students must have a minimum GPA of
3.0.
