Teacher: Kyla Swanson

Grade Level: First Grade

Date: 7 March 2018
Format: Whole Group
Individual

Gradual release can be seen throughout the

lesson, as the teacher is modelling what to do,
and slowly the student is learning how to do it
on their own.
Strategy: Phonological, Phonemic Awareness
Objective/Purpose/Instructional Goals: Introduce the concepts of sounds so
that students can recognize the
different sounds within a word.
Students will also recognize the
importance of the organization of
sounds within the word.
Texts/Resources/Materials: Book King Jack and the Dragon by
Peter Bently and Helen Oxenbury
White Board
White Board Markers
Unifix Cubes
Picture of Jack, Zack, back, men, den,
box, flag
Running Record Assignment
Assessment(s): Pre-Assessment: Student will take the
running record test. Student will be
asked to sit and listen to all the sounds
around him. He will tell the teacher
the different sounds and where they
are coming from. This will get the
student prepped for listening and form
an understanding of sounds. The
teacher will then say 3 different
words: "Jack, box, flag" and will work
with the student to figure out how
many different sounds there are. The
cubes will be used to represent the
different sounds. Teacher will present
the student with three different words,
"Jack, Zack, back" and will ask
student what he notices about the
words. "Box, men, den" are next and
student must pick out the ones that
sound similar. (pictures of each word
will be provided, allowing the student
to point to the picture of the word)
Formative Assessment: Student will
be given white board and if he hears a
rhyme, he will draw an exclamation
point. At the end of the reading we
will go back and count how many
rhymes he heard. With the words that
rhymed, the student will be asked to
count how many different sounds were
in each word—using the cubes.
Summative Assessment: Teacher will
write word on white board: Hat. Each
time the student can think of another
word that rhymes with Hat, the student
will add another cube to build a tower.
Can be repeated with multiple words.
Teacher will ask student what sound
in the word rhymes with the other
words (ex: the "at" in hat rhymes with
cat)
Brief outline (Activities): 1. Pre Reading: Teacher will give student
running record assignment.
2. Pre Reading: The teacher will ask student
to close his eyes and listen to the different
sounds around him (until he can't sit still any
longer). Student will then tell the teacher what
sounds he heard and where he thinks they are
coming from. The teacher will explain to the
student that there are sounds all around us, yet
sometimes we fail to notice them. This will
get the student prepped for listening and form
an understanding of sounds. (Background
knowledge, listening)
3. The teacher will then say 3 different words:
"Jack, box, flag" and will work with the
student to figure out how many different
sounds there are. The cubes will be used to
represent the different sounds. Teacher will
present the student with three different words,
"Jack, Zack, back" and will ask student what
he notices about the words. "Box, men, den"
are next and student must pick out the ones
that sound similar. Pictures will be provided
so the student may point to the picture of the
word. (Background knowledge, listening,
working with words: Guided Reading)
4. During Reading: Teacher will read King
Jack and the Dragon. The student will be
given a white board, and each time the student
hears a rhyme in the book, he places an
exclamation point on the white board.
(Listening to Reading)
5. Post Reading: Teacher and student will go
back and find the words that rhyme. Student
will be asked to listen to the words again and
repeat which parts allow the words to rhyme.
(Gradual Release, Listening to Reading)
6. Post Reading: Student will take the
rhyming words and, using the cubes, decide
how many sounds are in each. (Working
with words)
7. Teacher will write "Hat" on white board.
Student will then say as many words as he
knows that rhymes with Hat. With each word,
he may add a cube to build a tower. Can be
repeated with multiple words. Teacher will
ask student what sound in the word rhymes
with the other words (ex: the "at" in hat
rhymes with cat) (Independently learning,
working with words)

NOTES *Use this area to jot down any notes Phonological Awareness: student will learn
about the strategy or lesson. how to identify different sounds in oral
speech, learning about words that rhyme and
the sounds that allow them to rhyme
Phonemic Awareness: student will identify
the smallest unit of sounds within each word
and recognize that sounds and spelling do not
correlate.
