Purpose of this assignment
This unit aims to develop learners’ ability to underpin knowledge and understanding of a range of
television studio based programmes through research and essay writing.
Overview
Consider the genre conventions of three different programmes and the narrative structures employed
and make an analysis of the technical characteristics of the three selected programmes.

Scenario
Undertake research about three different types of TV Studio Productions, one with extremely high
production costs and two medium based production productions. Consider the genre conventions of the
different programmes and the narrative structures employed for each.
Make an analysis of the technical characteristics of the three selected programmes.
Present your work as an academic essay with quotations and reference to research as support for the
points you wish to make. Your essay must specifically deal with the assessment criteria as set for
learning outcome one in this unit. Consider the unit content listed above and deal with each point
raised to analyse the TV studio programmes you have chosen.

Tasks: (LO 1: 1.1 and M1, D3)


Task 1. Research and collect relevant material about your chosen three different Types of TV studio
based programmes and discuss their genre characteristics: eg: fiction, drama, sitcom, soap opera;
factual, eg news, current affairs, magazine, live debate shows; light entertainment, eg quiz shows,
game shows, variety.

Task 2. Consider and analyse aspects of each programme such as narrative structure: content;
sequences; pace; flow; continuity.

Task 3. Write about the technical characteristics of each of your programmes and comment on the
advantages: control of sound; control of lighting; control of set; control of audience; proximity of
management facilities; proximity of production facilities; proximity of on-site facilities; controlled entry;
security; health and safety; budget controllability; low transport cost.

Task 4. Present your work as an academic essay with quotations using the Havard System for citing
quotes and footnotes to explain media terms and references, also make sure that you focus specifically
on the assessment criteria’s and tasks set for this assignment.

Assignment title Plan and produce a number of pilot studio-based television production

Purpose of this assignment


This assignment is designed to develop learners’ ability to underpin knowledge and understanding of
how to plan and produce a pilot television studio based programmes, (Unit 34) and to use and develop
a range of practical skills in the organisation, recording, editing and packaging pilot television studio
productions.

Scenario
Students will be placed into teams with the task of working on a number of pilot TV studio production.
Teams will have to collectively decide on the genre of the productions, eg:(Children’s Programme,
Game Show, Current Affairs, Sports Show, Soap Opera, Series or Music Show), this is not inclusive
other concepts for productions can be proposed. All teams must undertake research into the different
styles of productions with the purpose of developing new ideas for pilot programmes. Scripts,
storyboards should be used to help create and develop the concept for the productions. Teams then
must organize and film the productions. All programmes can be recorded in the TV studio or as multi
camera productions on location. Any field material required for TV studio recording should be sourced
from VTR players in the TV studio rack and need to be shot on HD format for live recording or editing
at post production stage.

Each team member will have to take on individual as well as group responsibilities to be able to
develop and produce successful Pilot TV studio productions and film review show. Responsibilities will
include the development of research, ideas, scripting, story boarding, personnel and equipment
management, health and safety, lighting, camera operation, floor management, sound recording,
operating main desk, switching, studio management, set design, post production editing and graphics.
All teams must keep a comprehensive diary of the pre-production, production and post-production
stages. Maintain a diary of the development of all planning meetings and actual production and editing
sessions. Each student must provide written evidence to cover all unit outcomes for LO2 & LO3. Use
the internet and Moodle to communicate for project planning and to help keep a record of the
development and production processes.

For production number 2 each team must create and shoot a ‘Film Review show’ for film studies unit

For production number 3 each team must record a ‘Live Event’ in the TV studio or on location

Purpose of this assignment


This assignment is designed to develop students’ ability to evaluate the technical and aesthetic qualities
of their TV Studio Production.

Scenario
You are to do undertake an evaluation of the finished TV studio production.
Obtain feedback on the finished product: technical quality; aesthetic quality; suitability for purpose;
compared with production specification; own contribution to production; team’s contribution; audience
feedback.
Reflect on production skills: technical competence; workflow and time management; production
management and team working.
Analyse the feedback and reflect on changes that could be made and the quality and fitness for
purpose of the TV studio product.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of own skills and contribution to teamwork
Present written evidence on feedback and a written evaluation report.

Indicative Content:
