DEC short term training manual 2014
1. Preface
Defense Engineering College is strivig to excel in different areas to realize its missions. Accordingly, it has
been rendering different trainings to the public in general and to defence affiliated areas in paticular.
Still, its training had some limitations. To begin with, it was course based. Secondly, it was confined to
limited areas of interest; hence, it failed to address the vital needs of the stakeholders. Thirdly, trainees
were not properly certified.
To reverse these drawbacks, the college was earnestly working on the matter. Eventually, it produceda
training manual that encompasses modular way of training. The manual is also all inclusive so that
beneficiaries may exploit the college to the maximum. Trainees are also entitled to being certified.
The college is confident that this training manual will address the training needs of our customers, lest, the
manual is open to "modifications" when demands arise from the stakeholders.
2.2 Scope
The trining covers areas of interests of our customers. It however depends on the caacity of our staffs and
facilities.
2.3 Benefits
The benefits include enhancing the knowledge, expertise and experience of college members, building the
capacity of the manpower of clients and addressing technical problems of various institutions, business
organizations, industries, and other customers; enhancing the quality and relevance of teaching, research
and service delivered by the college, generating income to the college.

CEP and client will sign up agreement regarding the training. Similarly, the CEP and trainers will sign
contractual agreement to run the training.
2.5 Registration
Usually, course registration is made through trainees’ organizations after the training agreement is signed
between CEP and the client. The client shall submit list of trainees for the course. Individual or private
applicants can be registered by filling short term training application form from the CEP office.
2|Page
DEC short term training manual 2014
2.12 Eligibility
The short term training courses listed in this manual are suitable for low level technologists, employees
with practical working experiences in industries, University or College Undergraduate & Postgraduate
Engineering students.
For advance courses, the trainees should have working knowledge of programming languages and software
simulators.
2.13 Application
Sponsoring companies must request trainings through a formal letter indicating topic/title of course, list
number of students they are going to sponsor and date to conduct the training details to be sent to Defense
Engineering College-DebreZeit.
Based on this letter, the Head CEP will communicate with the companies towards the realization of the
requested training.
Individual applicants must fill in course application form given in this manual along with the appropriate
course payment fee to: Defense Engineering College, Account Number 1000011144277 Commercial Bank
of Ethiopia, Bishoftu Branch.

Practical47: Write a program to illuminate all the LEDs and switch them OFF after a delay of 1
second. Modify this program first for 5 seconds delay and then for 10 seconds delay.
Practical48: Write a program to read the status of all ON/OFF switches connected to the input
port of APPLIC -7 modules and accordingly display their status through the LEDs.
Practical49: Make the program in (a) to continuously monitor the switches and display their status
while you change the position of any switch manually.
Practical50: Write a program to read the status of the switches connected to the input port of the
APPLIC -7 kit. If they read a value greater than or equal to 12H (000100102) switch ON the even
numbered lights else the odd numbered LEDs
Practical51: Write a program to switch the LEDs alternately ON and OFF with approximately 1
second of delay in between.
Practical52: Implement the above using 2 Seconds for ON and 3 seconds for OFF.
Practical53: Write a program that will make the lights wink (flash on and off): The MSB nibble
first and then the LSB nibble next.
Practical54: Write a program to blink the LEDs ON and OFF with a delay of 1 Seconds in
between if the switches read 101010102. Else if it reads any other bit pattern continue blinking the
LEDs with 2 seconds of delay in between.
Practical55: Write a program to check the status of S4 to S1 switches of the kit. If the switches
read any value greater than 01112, the output LEDs have to enter the convergence display mode
else the output LEDs has to enter the divergence display mode.
Practical56: Write a program, which receives a number from the switches and performs the
following in an infinite loop, while changing any switch position manually. (Take observation and
consider odd and even numbers from the keyboard.)
Practical57: Multiply the number by 2 and output the result tothe lights.
Practical58: Write a program to test if any switch is ON and outputs the number of that switch. If
more than one switch is on, then the program must select the least significant switch, which is ON.
Practical59: Connect the cathode of the LED on APPLIC-71 to Q7 of O/P port as in fig.c, above
and the +5V point on APPLIC-71 to the +5V point on APPLIC-7. Write a program to switch the
LED ON and OFF with 1 second delay in between.
Now connect the LED in reverse direction and run the program in 1a. Take observation.
Connect the lamp terminals (Lp1 & LP2) between outlets +5V and Q6. Modify the program in
(5.1a) to turn the lamp ON and OFF.
Now connect the lamp to +12V instead, run the program and see the difference.
Again change the connection directions of the lamp, run the program and take observation.
DC Motor Programming
Practical60: Write a program to drive a DC motor for 10 seconds and then switch it OFF, which is
connected as in figure (d) above.
Practical61: Write a program to drive a DC motor continuously until reset. Observe the voltage
reading on the voltmeter on the APPLIC-71.
Practical62: Write a program to rotate the DC motor briefly in one direction and then in the other
direction. (Connect the motor as in fig. e, above).
30 | P a g e
DEC short term training manual 2014
Practical63: Write a program to check the status of I4 to I0 switches of the kit. If the switches read
any value greater than 01112, the motor shaft has to rotate in the clockwise direction else in the
anti-clock wise direction.
Practical64: Write a program to rotate the DC motor briefly in one direction and then in the other
direction.
Practical65:Write a program to check the status of I4 to I0 switches of the kit. If the switches read
any value greater than 01112, the motor shaft has to rotate in the clockwise direction else in the
anti-clock wise direction
Practical66: Write and implement a program to drive a stepper motor clockwise infinitely until
reset.
Practical67: Write and implement a program to drive a stepper motor anti clock-wise infinitely
until reset.
Explain how the program has to drive the motor with and without a freewheeling diode.
Practical68: Write and implement a program to drive a stepper motor 90 degree clockwise.
Practical69: Write and implement a program to drive a stepper motor 90 degree anti clockwise.
Practical70: Write a program, which will rotate the motor through 180 degrees, stop it, and then
rotate it back to its starting point.
Practical71: Write and implement a program to rotate the stepper motor 45degree clockwise if the
status of I6 switch is ON else if it is OFF drive the motor in anti-clockwise direction 90 degree.
Repeat the process continuously.
Practical72: Write a program to drive the Motor 65 degree clockwise if the input switches I7 to I4
read any value greater than or equal to 10112. Else if the bit pattern reads any value less than the
specified one the motor has to rotate in the opposite direction continuously.
