ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader,
Index
The new dog park at Symonds Reserve was opened by
Mayor Rosenberg and Christ Picton MP on October 15th
after a welcome to country by Georgina Williams.
In the 30 mins or so I was there, despite there being 11
dogs in one section, I did not hear a single bark. The
children with them were making more noise and their
joyous voices were delightful.
City of Onkaparinga are to be congratulated on both the
quality of construction of this facility and their common
sense and forbearance in going ahead with it,
acknowledging the majority support they had and ignoring
the distorted and inaccurate social media opposition put up
by some NIMBYs.

The next big fight on our hands seems to be the Latitude six storey development proposal. (Welcome to the Aldinga Gold Coast?) Unfortunately our council and community groups have little authority in this matter. It is a SA Govt appointed court decision. Maybe this could be the first major fight for our member for Mawson for the Aldinga Area. I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - Editor

Normal trials and tribulations

Before coming out to Adelaide as a ten-pound Pom in 1969, Annie (not her real name) had already narrowly escaped death in England by not travelling on the train she had originally intended to. It was a major crash with many fatalities - and her father, waiting in London, was sure she had been caught up in it.

In Oz, with her three little ones, she had a number of close encounters in traffic accidents; one that could have taken the life of her baby if she hadn't been holding her in her arms. The ambulance took them all from the accident site in Rover St., Port Willunga, to Flinders Medical Cen- tre - the driver with a crushed pelvis. The boys had been asleep at the time and the baby's empty cradle was split by the collision.

Three other close calls (one between a loaded car-carrier and a bus she was travelling on) along with some later serious health scares helped to convince her that she has divine protection.

Her spiritual development started in England as a child, being taken to church by friends, encouraged by Scripture lessons in public school and when she settled in Adelaide, committing her life fully to Christ.

The physical protection side is not the essential part for her faith but from the accumulated evidence in so many areas, Annie is confident that no matter what happens she is safe in the arms of her Saviour (like her daughter was in hers) for all time and beyond (especially if they have no public road and transport systems in the heavenly abode!).

Since 2010 every Christmas the Aldinga Community has come together to provide a wonderful Christmas Day lunch for families who might be facing a range of pres- sures at this time of year. It is also for those who might not have family or friends here to celebrate with, therefore spending the day alone. In past years our guests have enjoyed a traditional Christ- mas Dinner with all the fabulous trimmings. After the meal there is a special visit from the man in red, bringing Christ- mas gifts for all children. Everyone comes away from the event with a full tummy, warm heart, happy memories, gifts and other goodies… The Aldinga Institute makes a fabulous venue and we greatly appreciate the support of the Hall Committee who provide this venue to us each year. Their volunteers make the effort each year to decorate the Hall so beautifully. If you would like to volunteer some of your time and thor- oughly enjoy this day, please do get in touch. For more information or register to volunteer please con- tact Anne on 8215 6310. See poster p8 Ed.

The new look Studio 20 Youth Centre was launched on 22 September 2017 and our new layout enables us to offer more activities, facilitate the co-location of vital youth outreach services, and support the growing inter- ests and needs of local young people.

Studio 20 has almost doubled in size increasing its footprint to 500sqm into the old Aldinga library space. Population growth in Aldinga and strong demand for local youth services prompted the upgrade. Studio 20 has a key focus on youth arts and delivers programs in- cluding arts, cooking, sewing and Youth Advisor Group, offering term and holiday programs for young people 8- 25 years old. This new, modern, innovative space now offers meeting rooms, a fantastic training commercial kitchen, a multi-purpose facility, workshop and an out of hours hire space. For information on our programs and to enquire about using our space contact the centre on 8557 7555 or aldingayouth@onkaparinga.sa.gov.au and check out our Onkaparinga Youth Facebook page.

Some fascinating slate culverts have been uncovered, and the City of Onkaparinga is now working towards includ- ing this unexpected example of our slate heritage into the Streetscape. “Mortgage Tips: Fast Track Your Home Loan” by Nani Johnston

Last month, I wrote about two things you can do to fast track your home loan. They were: changing the loan repayment frequency, and making extra repayments above your minimum amount required. So, what else can you do in the next 30 minutes that will take years off your loan term and save you thousands in interest charges?

Tip #3: Offset account I love offset accounts, (just to put it out there). If you don’t want to make extra repayments to your home loan, opt for an offset account and make it work hard for you. Home loan interest is calculated daily on your loan balance. If you have an offset account, the interest is calculated based on your loan balance LESS your offset account balance. For example, if you have $5,000 in your offset account for a week, and your loan balance is $300,000, the interest for that whole week will be calculated based on a $295,000 loan amount. How good is that? Most offset accounts work just like a normal transaction account all your income can be deposited into it and expenses paid out of it. The longer you hold your money in an offset account, the better it is. Offset accounts are mainly available on variable loans, but there are some fixed loans available nowadays that come with offset features.

Tip #4: Loan Health-check If you want to get ahead of your loan, be proactive. Having a home loan does not mean a set and forget exercise. Stay informed of market changes. I keep in touch with my clients regularly, because we are a team and the aim is to pay off home loan as soon as possible. If you don’t have a mortgage broker like me to keep you on your toes, make sure you at least have a health check on your home loan every two to three years. Is your rate still competitive? Do you still have the right loan structure in place? If you have a fixed loan before and this has expired, your rate may revert to a standard rate

with no further discounts. Speaking to your bank may get you a small discount, but speaking to a mortgage broker will get you the right product, structure and rate, which could save you much more. A home loan health check can sometimes lead to a refinance, which incurs a small discharge fee but the high exit fees of the past have been removed.

I hope you will be mortgage free sooner in less than 30 years. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an email on nani@risehigh.com.au.

2017 Aldinga Bay Community Carols
We invite YOU to come along to the 13 th annual
Aldinga Bay Community Carols - set for Sunday the 10 th
of December 2017. We are extremely excited to see
attendance numbers continue to rise over the past few
years and eager to see what this year has in store.
We extend a massive thank you to the community who
turn out every year and allow us to keep this event com-
pletely FREE to enjoy. The Carols are held in Symonds
Reserve right next to the Aldinga Community Centre on
Stewart Avenue, Aldinga Beach.
The event will kick off at 5pm with a FREE
carnival. We have a new ‘Follow the Star’ activity which
includes a gift bag. We will also have face painting,
Inflatable Balls, twisted balloon animals, crafts the slow
rider bike challenge. Once you and the kids have worn
yourselves out trying all our fun carnival games, you will
most certainly be feeling rather hungry. Luckily we have
all your food and drink needs covered with many food
stalls and delicious coffees or milk shakes. We have
healthy wraps, treats from Home Grain Bakery, jam
donuts and a delicious sausage sizzle. If you have more
of a sweet tooth visit the Just Popped stall for all your
delicious treats. By the time you have enjoyed the
carnival, and filled your belly, the sun will be beginning
to set and the carols will be ready to start.
The Carols will begin at 7.30pm. Be sure to rug up
and bring along a picnic rug or chair. Grab a glow stick
or candle and settle in for a wonderful night of entertain-
ment. The carols will be led by the community choir as
well as featuring the talents of Dan White and The Amaz-
ing Drumming Monkeys.
The organising committee would like to thank all
our valued sponsors who without their support we would
not be able to run this community event. We would like
to extend a massive thankyou to our GOLD sponsors in
particular, The City of Onkaparinga, Home Grain
Bakery and Jemma Turner of Magain Real Estate.
Sunday the 10 th December is the day to look forward to,
mark it in your calendars, set an alert on your phone, but
most importantly get excited to share in the FREE
festivities of a wondrous night of merriment and
Christmas Carols.

COMING EVENTS The Cultural and Historic Significance of South Australian Trees - Well before relevant State laws were conceived, the National Trust was concerned about preserving SA’s built heritage and its natural and cultural history and understood there were noteworthy trees marking these elements of SA’s evolution. That these trees contribute to SA’s story. Acknowledge and preserve the tree acknowledge and preserve our understanding and appreciation of SA’s natural and cultural history. And of course many of these tree specimens stand the test of time and are quite inter-generational. Michael Heath, most recently from National Trust’s Significant Tree Steering Committee/Team (after a long and varied career beginning as a Landscape Architect) and Glenn Williams from Tree Net will illustrate that these special merit trees in South Australia are not just your everyday trees. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ the-cultural-and-historic-significance-of-south

Preceding this event will be the Willunga Hillsface Landcare Groups AGM. Tuesday 21st November at 6.30pm with the presenters speaking at 7pm
