Q.1) A drive has following parameters:


T= 150 – 0.1N, Nm, where N is the final speed in rpm.
Load torque Tl = 100, Nm
Initially the drive is operating in steady state. The characteristics of the load torque are changed to Tl = -100
Nm. Calculate initial and final equilibrium speeds.

Q.2) Obtain the equilibrium points and determine the steady state when motor and load torque are: T= -1 - 2ωm
and Tl= -3√ωm

Q.3) A 3-phase, 100KW, 6 pole, 960rpm wound rotor induction motor drives a load whose torque varies such
that a torque of 3000Nm of 10 sec duration is followed by a torque of 500Nm of duration long enough to attain
the steady state speed. Calculate the moment of inertia of the fly wheel, if motor torque should not exceed twice
the rated value. Moment of inertia of the motor is 10kg-m2. Motor has linear speed-torque curve in the region of
interest.

Q.4) A 220V, 970 rpm, 100 A dc separately excited motor has an armature resistance of 0.05Ω, is fed from a 3-
phase fully controlled rectifier. Available ac source has a line voltage of 440V, 50Hz. A star-delta connected
transformer is used to feed armature so that motor terminal voltage equals rated voltage when converter firing
angle is zero.
(i) Calculate the transformer turns ratio.
(ii) Determine the value of firing angle when: (a) motor is running at 1200rpm and rated torque; (b) when motor
is running at -800rpm and twice the rated torque.

Q.5) A 220V, 70A dc series motor has combined resistance of armature and field of 0.12Ω is controlled by
regenerative braking by chopper with a source voltage of 220V.
(i) Calculate the motor speed for a duty ratio of 0.5 and motor braking torque is equal to the rated motor torque.
(ii) Calculate the maximum allowable motor speed for a maximum permissible current of 70A and maximum
permissible duty ratio of 0.95.
(iii) What resistance must be inserted in armature circuit for the drive to run at 1000rpm without exceeding
armature current beyond 70A? The duty ratio of chopper has a range from 0.05 to 0.95.
(iv) To what extent the number of turns in the field winding should be reduced to run the motor at 1000rpm
without exceeding the armature current beyond 70A.

Q.6) A 230V, 870 rpm, 100A separately excited motor has an armature resistance of 0.02Ω. It is driving an
overhauling load whose torque may vary from zero to rated torque. Field flux can be changed and field saturates
at 1.2 times the rated flux. Calculate the speed at which motor can hold the load the regenerative braking
without exceeding twice the rated motor current

Q.7) A 230V, 1000 rpm motor, 105A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.06 Ω.
Calculate the flux as percent of rated flux for motor speed of 1500 rpm when load is such that the developed
motor power is maintained constant at rated value for all speeds above the rated speed.

Q.8) speed of dc series motor coupled to fan load is controlled by variation of armature voltage. When the
armature voltage is 400V, motor takes 20A and the fan speed is 250rpm. The combined resistance of armature
and field is 1.0 Ω. Calculate:
(i) Motor armature voltage for fan speed of 350rpm.
(ii) Motor speed for the armature voltage of 250V.

Q.9) A Y-connected squirrel cage induction motor has the following ratings and parameters: 400V, 50Hz, 4-
pole, 1370rpm, RS=2Ω, Rr’=3Ω, Xs=Xr’=3.5 Ω. Calculate the flowing for inverter fed induction motor drive: [1]
speed for a frequency of 30Hz and 80% of full load torque. [2] Frequency for speed of 1000rpm and full load
torque. [3] Torque for frequency of 40Hz and speed of 1100rpm.

Q.10) A Y-connected squirrel cage induction motor has the following ratings and parameters: 400V, 50Hz, 4-
pole, 1370rpm, RS=2Ω, Rr’=3Ω, Xs=Xr’=3.5 Ω. Calculate motor breakdown torque for inverter fed induction
motor for a frequency of 60Hz as a ratio of its 50Hz.

Q.11) A 3-ph, 440V, 50Hz, 6-pole, Y-connected induction motor has following parameters, RS=0.5Ω, Rr’=0.6Ω,
Xs=Xr’=1.0 Ω. Stator to rotor turns ratio is 2. If the motor is used for regenerative braking determine:
(i) Maximum overhauling torque it can hold and the range of the speed in which it can safely operate.
(ii) The speed at which it will hold a load with a load torque of 160Nm.

Q.12) A 3-ph, 5KW, 50Hz, 5pole, delta connected Induction motor has following parameters Rr’=2.0 Ω, and
Xr’=2.5 Ω. Following are the three points shown on the magnetization characteristics

Q.13) A 440V, 3-Ph, 50Hz, 6pole, 945 rpm delta connected induction motor has following parameters referred
to stator: RS=2Ω, Rr’=2Ω, Xs= 3, Xr’=4.0 Ω. When driving the fan load at rated voltage it runs at rated speed.
The motor speed is controlled by stator voltage control determine:
(i) Motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 800 rpm
(ii) Motor speed, current and torque for terminal voltage of 280 V.

Q.14) A 440V, 50Hz, 4 pole, 1470rpm delta connected squirrel cage induction motor has the following
parameters: RS=0.5 Ω, Rr’=0.4Ω, , Xs= 0.7Ω,Xr’=0.8 Ω. The motor is fed from VSI and operated at constant
(V/f) up to 50Hz and at rated voltage above 50Hz.
(i) Calculate the breakdown torques for frequency of 75Hz both for motoring and braking.
(ii) Frequency for motoring at 950rpm and full load torque.
(iii) Frequency for the regenerative braking operation at 1000 rpm and full load torque.
Assume the speed torque curves to be parallel straight lines in the region of interest.

Q.15) What is the closed loop control of a drive. Draw the suitable diagram and explain it.
