Chapter 1

Introduction
Background of the Study

This Study shows that the how the Wi-Fi having effect to the academic performance of the
college student of Don Bosco Technical College Mandaluyong. The Study main goal is to know if
the Wi-Fi really help and to improve the learning of the student or it will cause distraction to their
school.

Nowadays, the way students learn is way different from how students used to learn years
ago. This generation of students is a digital generation, and young people are used to work and

develop their skills by using devices connected to the internet. Most students read books and
write homeworks on their devices and some schools even provide their own Phones and tablets
for the pupils. Having Wi-Fi connection at school means leveraging Wi-Fi enabled devices for

educational purposes. Nevertheless, catching up with tech-advancements might be a challenge

for educational institutions, but bringing Wi-Fi connection at school will play an important role in
delivering effective and engaging learning experience.

Fully 90% believe Wi-Fi access is as essential to an education as a classroom or a

computer .
Wi-Fi is particularly important on University campus for students that live on-site and can
heavily affect their grades if they are not able to connect and carry out the necessary research
online. It’s viewed as so crucial that the same Wakefield survey found that 48% of students would
give up beer before Wi-Fi as well as a Computer World poll (2008) finding that 75% students said
Wi-Fi access on their campus sites helps them get better grades.

According to the website, http://www.kbr.co.uk “Education is rapidly moving towards

mobile learning on the likes of iPads, Android Tablets and Google Chromebooks. These devices
can only communicate with the school’s network over WiFi as they have no wired network port.
One of the main reasons for this is the fantastic choice of educational applications and the fact
that students are so comfortable using these types of devices in their homes. Lessons are now
being written around this technology which means the lesson cannot be taught without fast,
reliable Wi-Fi and suitable internet access.”
Statement of the Problem

The study aims to know The Effects of having a wifi connection in the campus and its
relationship to the academic performance of the college students of Don Bosco Technical
College.
1. Does the Wi-Fi of the school affect the academic performance of the college
students?
2. Number of student who makes use of the Wi-Fi of the school?
3. What is the purpose of the students in using or connecting to the Wi-Fi?

Objectives of the Study

1. Determine the effectiveness of having a Wi-Fi in campus to the academic
performance
2. Determine if the Wi-Fi can really distract the student during class hour
3. Study what are the effect of the Wi-Fi to the academic performance
4. Suggest to practical ways so that the student will not distract class hours

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This Study was on the evaluation of the college students of Don Bosco Technical College
Mandaluyong, these are use to know the student who are using Wi-Fi in school and how this
affect their academic performance, it involved 30 or more respondents composed of the college
students of Don Bosco Technical College and were selected by random sampling.

The main source of data was through survey questionnaire that was given to the college
student. That was prepared by the Researcher.

Significance of the Study

This Study is to know if the wifi of the school really use properly and also if the wifi really
help the student to improve and more enhance their academic performance by the help of the wifi
or this really cause of distraction in their class. This Benefit the student to help them to know that
Wifi really helps them to their academic performance.

Related Literature

Based on the IEEE( Institute of Electrical And Electronics Engineers) is that Wi-Fi is a
Technology where you can access to a Internet or Network.
Purpose of Wi-Fi in institutions (education)
According to Awais, Bilal, Usman, Waqas and Sehrish (2001), access to information is
very significant for studying purposes. Currently there is a lot of information that is released every
day and most of it is available on the Internet. Also, it is not easy that an institution can have all
the recent books and the old ones in the library (Awais et al., 2001). With that being said, the
Internet becomes a better way that anyone can get information that is both old and current.

According to Ehrman (1995) as cited by Ogedebe (2012), the impact of Wi-Fi and Internet
on academic performance of the student has shown a positive reaction because now students
are able to access more information in short period of time. Also, students are able do their
assignments and even submit on time because there is s no longer a need for them to print and
submit their work. They just use their smartphone to connect and submit on time online, however
as they get used to the technology others start to use it for non-academic purposes (Ogedebe,
2012). In addition, it also has a positive impact as students can have a group discussion using
video conferencing. Busari (2001), says that it is important as it improves the interaction or
communication between students and their lecturers during schooling hours when they are busy

doing their work.

With that being said, some authors differ by arguing that not all of this only produce positive

impact on the academic performance of students, but there are also negative impacts that Wi-Fi

and all the wireless devices bring to the table (Lauricella & Kay, 2010). In addition, Mehmood and

Taswir (2013), also argue that the use of Internet and social network can impact negatively on
the academic performance of student, this was discovered in the survey that was conducted in

colleges (Mehmood & Taswir, 2013)

Geri and Grace-Martin (2001) discovered that the emergence of statistically significant
results suggests that quantitative characteristics of browsing behavior can be useful predictors of
meaningful behavioral outcomes. Variables such as number of browsing sessions and length of
browsing sessions correlated with students’ final grades. The valence and magnitude of these
correlations were found to interact with the course (whether a student was enrolled in the
communications or computer science course), browsing context, and gender.

According to Carvin (2006) researchers noted that for the first six months of the study,
Internet access appeared to have no effect on GPA. However, Internet usage did predict GPA
obtained after one year of home access. This pattern continued through the end of the study, the
researchers observing a correlation between home Internet access and higher grade points. They
also correlated home access with higher standardized test scores in reading: More time online
was associated with higher reading comprehension and total reading scores. They attributed
these results to the text-heavy nature of Internet. Having access to the amount of information that
the Internet provide help students complete homework and projects. Socializing tools help
students study with their peers. Students already use this technology and if teachers starts to
teach their students to use these tools to enhanced their education, then there will be a strong
correlation between Internet access and GPA.

Sampling Design

Population: College Students of Don Bosco Technical College

Sampling Frame: Any Random College Students of Don Bosco Technical College Mandaluyong

Sampling Design: Simple random sampling that will be use into college student of Don Bosco
Technical College in different courses to gather a data. And so that we know if the Wi-Fi in
Campus really help them to their academics.
Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher conducted a Survey questionnaire to gather a data. The survey

questionnaire that was prepared by the researcher will be given to the College students of Don
Bosco Technical College in different courses randomly. The questionnaire will be answer honestly
by the respondents. The researcher also use Google Forms so that it can easily give the
questionnaire to the respondents and it can also manage all the answer of the respondents. After
the Questionnaire was distributed to the respondents it will collect all the answers. Through this
process the researcher will easily get a data for research.
