Moment of a Force
When o force is applied to a body it will produce a tendency for the body to rotate about
a point that is not on the line of action of the force. This tendency is sometimes called a
torque, but most often it is called the moment of a force or simply the moment.

Examples:
Distributed Loads

Determine the distributed area load (psf) on the wood pallet, the weight of
a cement bag is 94 lb.

Solution:

• Total weight of stack = 5 rows x 5 columns x 94 lb = 2,350 lb

• Pallet dimensions: Width = 1000 mm (3.28 ft)

Length = 1200 mm (3.94 ft)
Thickness = 140 mm (5.51 in)

• Distributed area load

• w = Weight/Area

• w = (2350 lb)/(3.28 ft x 3.94 ft) = 181.84 ~ 182 lb/ft^2 = 182 psf
