AIRCEL CEO

MUMBAI: Kaizad Heerjee, the chief executive officer of Aircel, has emerged as a strong contender to
head an entity being planned by combining the wireless operations of Reliance Communications with
the company, which could emerge as a strong No. 4 telco in India's intensely competitive telecom
market.

Heerjee has been offered a two-year extension on his contract, two people familiar with the negotiations
said. Heerjee declined to comment on the matter and referred queries to the com ..
Aircel Appoints Kaizad Heerjee as COO

Aircel, has appointed Dr Kaizad Heerjee (ex CEO from U Mobile, Malaysia) as the company’s COO.
The leadership position was vacant for past few months, post the exit of Gurdeep Singh (he has recently
taken over as President & CEO for Reliance Wireless Business). Aircel is the country’s fifth-largest
telecom company, with over 60 million customers. The company has a majority ownership by
Malaysia’s Maxis. Jean Pascal, from Maxis had reportedly taken over as the COO, post exit of Gurdeep
Singh.

Kaizad Heerjee, has most recently been with U Mobile, Malaysia as the CEO. Ealier he has worked
with Indosat, Singapore Technologies, Star Hub, Informm Development Authority of Singapore &
Digital Equitment Corporation. He has a PhD in Computer science, and MSc in IT. During his over 20
years of experience he has been with top companies in the areas of technology & communications.

Earlier this year, we had seen a series of top team exits from Aircel, following business restructuring
announced in last part of 2011. Following the changes in organization, the company saw the exit of

13
Gurdeep Singh, the COO followed by the exit of group Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Malickarjun
Rao, and the company’s Chief Marketing Officer Rahul Saighal.

The overhaul of organization lead to the business being split into two divisions – one focused on
Operations –OpCo & the other focused on Networks – NetCo. The Operations, division being
responsible for marketing, branding, go to market strategy and expansion. The Networks division
responsible for active infrastructure of the company. The company had earlier hived off its passive
infrastructure assets (tower business) to GTL. Sudhir Mathur, the CFO has been heading the Networks
division.

Under the present structure, both the division would report to the new COO, while Sudhir Mathur,
would also have a direct reporting to Sandip Das, CEO , Maxis. It seems, that following the changing
dynamics of the telecom industry, the structure may have been pushed back in some ways, to its earlier
shape.

IDEA

Idea Cellular is a wireless telephony company operating in various state in India. It initially started
in1995 as a joint venture among the Tata’s, Aditya Birla Group and AT&T by merging “Wings
Cellular” operating in Madhya Pradhesh, Uttar Pradesh(UP) West, Rajasthan and Tata Cellular as well
as Birla AT&T Communications.

Initially having a very limited footprint in the GSM arena, the acquisition of Escotel in 2004 gave Idea a
truely pan-India presence covering Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Andra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh,
Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh(East and West), Haryana, Kerala, Rajasthan and Delhi(inclusive of NCR).

Initially the Birla’s the Tata’s and AT&T Wireless each held one-third equally in the company. But
following AT&T Wireless mergerwith Cingular Wireless in 2004, Cingular decided to sell its 32.9%
stake in Idea. This stake was bought by both the Tatas and Birlas at16.45% each.

21
Tata’s foray into the cellular market with its own subsidiary, Tata Indicom, a CDMA-based mobile
provider, cropped differences between the Tatas and Birlas This dual holding by Tatas also became a
major reason for the delay in Idea being granted a license to operate in Mumbai. This was because as
per Department of Telecom (DOT) license norms, one promoter could not have more than 10% stake in
two companies operating in the same circle and Tata Indicom was already operating in Mumbai when
Idea feild for its license.

The Birlas thus approached the DOT and sought its intervention, and the Tatas replied by saying that
they would exit Idea but only for a good price. On April 10, 2006, the Aditya Birla Group announced its
acquisition of the 48.18% stake held by the Tatas at Rs.40.51 a share amounting to Rs.44.06 billion.
While 15% of the 48.14% stake was acquired Aditya Birla Nuvo, a company in-charge of the Birlas
new business initiatives, the remaining stake was acquired by Birla TMT holdings Private Ltd., an AV
Birla family owned company. Currently, Birla Group holds 49.1% of the total shares of the company.

Bengal. Aircel launched 4G services in Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir in August 2014, becoming
the only private telecom operator to offer all the three existing technologies of 2G, 3G and 4G in these
markets. Chinese equipment maker ZTE announced on 30 December 2013, that it had won a contract to
deploy a 4G broadband network based on LTE technology for Aircel. The LTE network will be
launched in Tamil Nadu and will be expanded later to other circles. On 16 July 2014, it launched 4G
services in four circles Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar and Odisha.

Corporate Social Responsibility at Aircel

In a country as large as ours there are innumerable causes that a corporate can support. At Aircel, we
realized the need to create strong bonds with communities and their environment. India is a young
country and yet one plagued by issues of education, unemployment, degrading environment, etc. For
any corporate to be successful in its societal commitments, it is imperative to address these issues in a
holistic perspective.

At Aircel, we have structured our CSR framework called the ‘3Es Framework' to include the most
pressing issues - Employability, Education and Environment. The attempt is to not only address the
requirements of the neediest but also ensure a sustainable future for them, their families and the
environment.

Employability: India today has a notable skill gap in the white collared bracket. We are witnessing ever
swelling population growth in our cities coupled with large scale migrations from small towns and rural
India. A majority of these people are youth and their aspirations are not met due to the lack of skill sets
required. As a result, most of these youth get marginalized early and end up leading a life of
exploitation, acute poverty and hopelessness.

Vocational skilling to create employability opportunities has been one of Aircel's key intervention areas.
We have created sustainable opportunities for underprivileged youth, by skilling them in skill sets best
suited to the markets they live in. Some of the skills taught are basic Sales techniques, Customer
Relationships, Hospitality, etc. Post skilling, youth are able to secure for themselves sustainable
livelihood opportunities which not only induce confidence amongst them but also help in uplifting their
families and communities in the long term.

Education: The digital divide in India is prominent. To bridge this digital divide we conceptualized
Aircel a+. In this project, we run computer learning centers for children from underprivileged
backgrounds, who would otherwise have no access to basic computer literacy. The project is run in
partnership with various NGOs in government schools for the underprivileged or in NGO shelters.
Children and youth are taught the Microsoft ULIP curriculum that encompasses both basic as well as an
intermediate curriculum. This empowers them with a good knowledge in computer operations that helps

28
not only instilling confidence in the children but also goes a long way in preparing them for the journey
ahead.

Environment: The Tiger is our national animal and one that has been a part of our folklore and history
for millennia. Yet this magnificent beast is on the brink of extinction. The Tiger can easily be called as
the metaphor for nature, as it is a top predator and its existence ensures a healthy and a sustainable
ecological balance. The year 2008 revealed the shocking number that there were just ‘1411' tigers left in
India. ‘Save Our Tigers' is a cause related campaign started by Aircel during the latter part of 2008 with
an aim to create mass awareness on the plight of this magnificent beast and rally efforts to save it.

Save Our Tigers

Aircel’s tag line to bring alive the cause, ‘Just 1411 left, Save Our Tigers’, hit a chord in the hearts and
minds of millions of Indians and evolved into a brand unto itself. People began to rally for the cause and
started lending their voices towards it.

Our seriousness towards doing our bit to Save Our Tigers has led us to partner with several well-known
organizations and individuals to create an impact on ground where it really matters. We work on several
projects that encompass capacity building, conflict mitigation and awareness creation. This helps us
address issues in 360 degrees and reach out to create maximum impact.

 Projects with WWF- India:Aircel began active on ground support work in 2008 with WWF-
India. Post a project- donor match, we conceptualized and put to practice two projects, detailed
below:

 Support Initiative Fund - In this project, we worked across all the tiger reserves in the country,
extending infrastructure and capacity support on a need basis.
 Conservation of Tigers in Assam: The state of Assam has one of the highest densities of Tiger
populations in the country, but also has very high human- animal conflict. We concentrated on
capacity building here, carrying out extensive work on training of forest guards in anti-poaching
measures, infrastructure buildup within the tiger reserves and in securing corridors.
 Conflict mitigation in Sunderbans: The Sunderbans is known for one of the healthiest Tiger
populations, but in the recent years has had an increase in incidents of Human- Animal conflicts
due to Habitat destruction along with increase in population. In an attempt to negate this, Aircel
along with WWF-India worked in a conflict mitigation project in the Sunderbans. We put into

29
use several solar lamps and a unique technologically advanced trapping cage to capture Tigers
that stray into human habitation and thereby prevent harm to them.

 Projects with Wildlife Trust of India:

 Conflict mitigation in the Dudhwa Landscape: Launched in May 2013 in partnership with the
Wildlife Trust of India and theUttar Pradesh Government, this project aims to mitigate human-
carnivore conflicts in the Dudhwa Tiger landscape. The Dudhwa landscape houses a good tiger
population but is also one that is plagued with increased conflict between man &tigers, besides
with other large carnivores. We have developed Primary Response Teams and deployed a Rapid
Response Team to work along with the communities to negate conflict in this area.
 Rapid Action Protection in Tamil Nadu: India has 3 of the world’s 32 bio diversity hotspots.
The south Indian landscape is one of these. The reserve forests of Tamil Nadu are contiguous to
the Nilgiri landscape and are important sanctuaries to various endangered species including the
tiger. In this landscape, we extended our support in the following three areas:
 Snare-free forests for Tigers: ‘Anti-snare Walks’ for anti-poaching in Meghamalai
Wildlife Sanctuary:
 Re-Fabrication of Rapid Response Units in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, contiguous to
Sathyamangalam
 Equipping forest staff in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, with anti-poaching kits

 Partnership with NDTV and Wildlife Conservation Trust:Reaching the masses with their
active participation in Saving Our Tigers has always been a goal of Aircel. It is only when the
masses rally for a cause such as this that high impact becomes tangible and realised.

Aircel along with NDTV, held the 1st and 2nd Save Our Tigers Telethon in 2010 and 2012.
Besides the large awareness that it created, over Rs 10 Cr was donated by the public to work on
Tiger conservation. We partnered with the NGO - Wildlife Conservation Trust to implement
high impact on ground projects with the funds so generously donated. The projects consisted of
developing and deploying Rapid Response Unit vehicles, revamping anti- poaching
camps and training of foresters. We have been able to effectively place 41 Rapid Response
Units in 35 tiger reserves, train frontline forest guards in various aspects of conservation and
revamp over 1167 anti-poaching camps across most tiger reserves.

 Partnership with Sanctuary Asia:Aircel partnered Sanctuary Asia in 2010 to create awareness
and kindle the conservationist mindset amongst our generation next.

 Kids for Tigers is a wildlife conservation initiative driven by a national campaign envisioned
and implemented by Sanctuary Asia over a decade ago. Conducted in Schools across 15 cities,

30
the programme uses the Tiger as a metaphor for all of nature and as a symbol of the
environmental health of the habitats in which it is found.
 Kids For Tigers Express launched in April 2011 by Jairam Ramesh –Minister of Environment.
The KFT Express is a fully equipped edutainment van that traverses the villages around
Ranthambhore National Park spreading awareness and importance amongst the communities on
the need to Save Our Tigers.

 Strokes for Stripes:We invited sixteen of India’s leading artists, such as Sanjay Bhattacharya,
ShivaniBharadwaj, Niladri Paul and others to paint for the cause. Their paintings were auctioned
at an event in Delhi to raise funds and create awareness amongst the elite in Delhi. Funds
generated have been utilized in capacity building in Sathyamangalam and Meghamalai Tiger
reserves through our partner NGO - WildLife Trust of India.

Aircel win at MMA Awards

Several Indian entries have won at the APAC level in the past. However, this is the first time that an
Indian campaign has been awarded at the global level.

At the recently held Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) Awards in New York, two Indian
companies, Affle and Aircel, have been recognised for their contribution to the mobile marketing
industry.

Affle has received the awards for the Best Use of Mobile Media for branding purposes, both in the
APAC and Global segment. These awards were won for its advertising for Maruti Suzuki, for a
campaign which helped Maruti leverage sponsorship of top sporting events on Airtel's mobile platform.

To win this award, Affle documented a two month campaign using multiple mobile media platforms
such as Affle's SMS2.0, mobile internet, voice portals and SMS advertising.

36
The campaign was a result of Affle, Airtel and Maruti Suzuki's study of changing consumer behaviour,
which showed a significant increase in the consumption of sports related content on mobile phones.
Taking this key factor into consideration, a campaign to increase Maruti Suzuki's association with sports
and to build greater affinity with its target audience on their medium of choice was created. The
uniqueness, scale and results of the campaign ensured that it became the first Indian entry to win this
award in the Global category at the MMA.

On the other hand, Aircel has received an award in the Innovation category in APAC level for Aircel
Pocket Internet. Aircel introduced Pocket Internet cards, which offers unlimited browsing, unlimited
song shuffle on Dialer Tunes to free exciting games, free wallpapers and a whole lot more. The
company started the scheme with an intention to attract youngsters to cash on their interest in social
networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut.

Several Indian entries have won awards in the APAC level earlier. However, this is the first time that an
Indian campaign has been awarded as the best globally.

MMA is the premier global non-profit trade association representing all players in the mobile marketing
value chain. With more than 700 member companies, MMA is an action-oriented organisation with
global focus, regional actions and local relevance. MMA's primary focus is to establish mobile as an
indispensable part of the marketing mix. Its global headquarters are located in the US and it has regional
chapters, including North America (NA), Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Latin America
(LATAM) and Asia Pacific (APAC)) branches.

Aircel Advantage and Disadvantage
AIRCEL

ADVANTAGE OF AIRCEL AND DISADVANTAGE OF AIRCEL

I notice from January

Advantage is recharge with 128 and use 3g data and then recharge with 8 you will get 100 MB 3g daily
upto 1 month
(1.Note:You will recharge 128 and then 8 this will also you get 100 mb 3g data. but rumor about loose
of 500MB 3g data that you get from 128 pack

2.Note:You will get 100 MB 3g data daily at 12 o'clock midnight.

Disadvantage is that the the aircel speed become worst after using 500 MB 3g Data and using 2g nearly
700mb the speed goes to 400bytes to 5kb i analyis this speed on IDM means downloading speed is 32
kbps.

(Note:This Disadvantage occur all my friends too and this disadvantage is no connection with 100 3g
data becoz my frnd are using simply recharge with 128.i also simply recharge with 128 but i reconize
that speed gone worst and next day i have to send some file to my frnd but the due to hell speed it can't
possible so i recharge with Rs 8 Pack and i get that 100 mb 3g data daily but still not happy with that
worst speed)
After recent launch of its services in financial capital of India, Aircel, a JV between Maxis
Communications Berhad, Malaysia (holding 74% stake) and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, has come
a long way since launch of its services in 1999. Before Mumbai, Aircel has launched its services in
Delhi (March09) which completed its foray into all four major metros of India. We will take a look
at this most ambitious telecom operator who is looking forward to garner 30 million subscriber
bases by the end of year 2009.

39
After launch of its services in 1999 in Tamilnadu Circle, Aircel became leading operator in just 18
months. In Dec 2003, it has commercially launched its services in Chennai circle and rapidly
established itself as a market leader (27% share against 23% of Airtel). Since 2005, company is
looking forward to expand its services into different circles and after getting all operational licenses
it succeeded in garnering a fair number of subscribers in Assam, the Northeast, Orissa, Bihar, J&K,
HP, and WB & Kolkata. In fact, in Assam & Northeast it has subscriber base of 2.6 million, which
is more than sub base of any other operator operating in the region.

In 2008, it was allocated spectrum for 13 new circles, giving boost for its rollout plans in circles
like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, MP, Karnataka, Maharashtra & Goa etc. Mumbai was Aircel’s 17th
circle of operation & most recently added, after launch of Delhi, UP (E), AP and very soon
company will be rolling out services into rest of Maharashtra. This will take Aircel’s footprint to 18
circles of operations out of 23. Recent launches into different circles saw company’s market share
growing drastically from 2.88 % in Mar-06 to 4.65% in Feb-09.

The Advantage:
In the commonplace market such a telecom, it is highly rewarding if you have some clear cut
advantages over your competitors. Though Aircel has no such advantages as compared to other
operators, its main strong point is its strong financial backing from Maxis. A total of $10 billion
has been kept aside for investment till 2011 along with commitment of over $5 billion for
countrywide capex rollouts through 2009. Though there are no major disadvantages with Aircel, it
will be a real daunting task to garner decent subscribers in metros. The other advantage comes from
the NGN expertise of Maxis telecom in more mature markets like Malaysia especially with 3G &
WiMAX. This will certainly help Aircel, in 3G rollouts in India, provided it gets license for
operation.

The Strategy:
It will be real challenge for Aircel to garner decent sub base in recently launched circles like Delhi,
Mumbai, and AP etc. Though Delhi & Mumbai has more than 90% mobile penetration, the actual
unique number tally is somewhere around 70%. Aircel is betting on this number along with
targeting churn out subscribers (3 % churn rate) to garner subscribers. For Aircel, acquiring more
number of subscribers is going to be main target and it has already started offering highly
competitive tariff plans in these mature markets. When creamy layer has already been taken,
company can only bet on competitive tariffs & attractive VASs to garner subscribers. While it has
roped in Indian Cricket icon M.S. Dhoni for advertisements & branding, company is betting on its
VAS offerings like Location based services & phone banking to attract subscribers in metros.
Surely, it is going to replicate the success of Maxis in Malaysia, where 1/3rd of revenue comes
from Data services. Probably, while talking about differentiation in the market Aircel is
40
concentrating more on VAS & Data services than any other new operator. This strategy is paying
off a bit, as it has succeeded in garnering 28K sub base in March within 15 days of launch of its
services, in Delhi-NCR. Moreover it is betting on its QoS, where it has least congested network in
all operators, to attract new subscribers, who are facing number of congestion related issues with
existing telecom monopolies.

The Plan:
Just like Airtel, Voda & Idea, Aircel has also opted out for outsourcing route to tie with specialists.
It has three year managed service hosting agreement with Ericsson, which has end-to-end
responsibility to provide Aircel with a consumer push email service, including system integration,
management, operations & maintenance. The company has also tied up with Wipro for its nine
years NGN contract. Recently company has tied up with Oracle for implementation of Oracle
Communications Services Fulfillment suite.

Company is also looking forward to increase its tower numbers in coming months. It is also open to
renting or sharing of towers (like Indus Towers) to save on capex.

Coming back to adaptation of new technologies like 3G & WiMAX, Aircel has launched WiMAX
services in Chennai in Oct 2006, expanding the network to 44 cities, where it provides high end
data services to number of corporate clients. On 3G front, company has already tasted complete
range of 3G services in Chennai & awaiting for 3G license auction. Moreover, Aircel has kept
aside Rs 20 billion for 3G spectrum despite economic slowdown.

Company is also looking forward to acquire Loop Telecom (Former BPL Mobile) who has decent
subscriber base in Mumbai Circle. This move, if successfully acquired, will help Aircel in
establishing itself as a major telecom operator in Mumbai Circle, which is the highest revenue
generating circle in India.

The future:
Surely, Aircel has come a long way from being a Chennai based Telecom Operator known by very
few to almost becoming a Pan-Indian Mobile Operator. If you look at subscribers additions,
company has sub base of 17 million in Feb 09 as compared to 2.6 million in Mar 06. With Urban
market coming close to saturation, Aircel needs to concentrate simultaneously on to rural foray &
Metro rollouts. Though, no clear policy about rural market, company is betting on its VAS
portfolio to attract subscribers in both types of markets. Surely, in coming months completing
major rollouts & acquiring decent sub-base will be the major target for Aircel. Still, the real
question remains unanswered, will Aircel be able to acquire decent subscriber base & if it is, how
will it maintain it, with churn rate reaching it to top at 3.3 %?. May be it will adopt merger &

41
acquisition route or it will bet on highly competitive tariff pricing along with VASs, which-ever
route it takes, there lies a very tough competition ahead. But still, Aircel is surely going to make a
mark with its highly aggressive marking strategy, strong financial backing & differentiation market
segment strategy. Just watch out for Aircel in coming months!
