BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Memory is an important process that stores and retrieves information in our day to

day lives. Without memory, we won’t be able to function and do our tasks. This is the

reason why memory is essential to us. We mull over ideas in the present with our short-

term (or working) memory, while we store past events and learned meanings in our long-

term (episodic or semantic) memory. There are certain instances wherein students would

have “memory block” or forget their lessons after just studying them last night. Or,

certain instances wherein students have difficulty in remembering or memorizing certain

words or topics in school. This leads to them having difficulty in accomplishing

important tasks at school.

According to Sophie Bushwick (2011), A study from New Zealand suggests that

children as young as two years old could already recall their experiences. But, the general

lack of memories before the age of three, dubbed childhood amnesia, has always had

exceptions. This is because some stories would be fabricated by the adults.

According to Susan Gathercole (2011), approximately 10% of primary students

have poor working memory, thus prohibiting them from finishing tasks inside the

classroom. While some children could start step 1, a lot of them would not proceed

further to step 2 and so on. Children that have poor working memory tends to keep

repeating the steps or skipping some steps.

According to Anthea Lipsett (2008), there are 500,000 children in primary school

that are suffering and affected by poor memory. This affects their learnings in the

classroom and thus putting them at the lower end of the spectrum in class. This children

are having problems with manipulating and holding information in their head.

According to a website (2015) Studies show that 75% of wrongful convictions are

a result of unreliable visual memory, which is notoriously unreliable.

METHODS OF RESEARCH

The study used experimental method in order to find out the effects of different

teaching techniques on the recall of students. Experimental method is a procedure in

which studies the cause and effect relationship between variables. In this experiment,

there would be 3 experimental groups, with three different independent variables, such as

mnemonics, writing method and the use of pictures. The dependent variable in this

experiment is recall. This experiment made use of more than two experimental design.

The participants are asked to memorize 25 different words and would be asked after to

write what they remember. Although there would be different ways on presenting the

words but each word would just be shown by 5 seconds. After completing this, The

researchers would come back again after 5 days to check if the students still recall the 25

words.
