Abstract

In this paper we proposed Wireless irrigation monitoring and controlling system to monitor
different parameters with the help of wireless sensor network (WSN). The proposed system model
which is cost effective and efficient solution for existing irrigation system to monitor real time
parameters. The embedded web server is designed using ARDUINO UNO with the help of Real
time operating system (RTOS). The system designed using the concept of wireless sensor network
and the data collected to the server side is real time and user can continuously monitor and control
through the Internet by using computer or handheld wireless devices. The experimental result
shows that system useful to monitor and control different parameters from remote location.

CHAPTER ONE
PROJECT DEFINITION

1.1 Introduction
Ethiopian agriculture is dependent on the monsoons which is not a reliable source of water, so
there is a need for an automatic irrigation system in the country which can provide water to the
farms according to their moisture and soil types. Modern drip Irrigation is today ‘s need because
water resources are very limited, diminishing day by day and most of them depend upon
monsoons. The one and only one solution to this problem is automated Drip Irrigation system. In
the field of agriculture, use of proper method of irrigation is important and it is well known that
irrigation by drip is very economical and efficient. Taking into consideration all the problems
that arise in the irrigation system it is very difficult to control it normally by the farmers. It will
also be a hectic process for a human being to continuously monitor all required actions that has
to be carried out in the field. So, this project has been implemented in order to solve all these
problems. It will also help in a great way to reduce the man power and water wastage by the
introduction of efficient devices. This system allows the user who will be monitoring the entire
flow process of the irrigation system to control it both in the manual and automatic mode. Hence
it is very easy and reliable method of monitoring and controlling the irrigation system using a
long-distance ZigBee module

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The motivation for this project came from the countries where economy is based on
agriculture and the climatic conditions lead to lack of rains & scarcity of water.
The farmers working in the farm lands are solely dependent on the rains and bore wells for
irrigation of the land. Even if the farm land has a water-pump, manual intervention by farmers is
required to turn the pump on/off whenever needed. The aim of our project is to minimize this
manual intervention by the farmer, which is why we are using micro
controller(MSP430G2231).The micro-controller based Automated Irrigation system will serve
the following purposes:
1) As there is no un-planned usage of water, a lot of water is saved from being wasted.
2) The irrigation is only when there is not enough moisture in the soil and the microcontroller
decides when should the pump be turned on/off, saves a lot time for the
farmers. This also gives much needed rest to the farmers, as they don ‘t has to go and turn the
pump on/off manually. The ADC was successfully sampling the analog values given by the soil
moisture sensor and we could see the values being stored in the memory register of the ADC. We
emulated the soil using awed tissue paper and when the soil moisture sensor was wrapped inside
the wet tissue paper, one of the LED ‘s of the MSP430 glowed which indicated that

PROJECT DETAILS

2.1 Literature Review

In the field of agriculture use of technology plays important role in rising the production as well
as in reducing the extra human power efforts.
Some of the researches develop the system for farmers and provides the systems that use
technologies which are helpful for increasing the agricultural yield. Some of such researches
passed out in field of agriculture are summarized here.
System proves advanced development in wireless sensor networks which is used in monitoring
many parameters in agriculture. With the growth of miniaturized sensor strategy attached with
wireless technologies and it was capable of remotely observing parameters such as humidity,
water level, light density, soil moisture and temperature. System organize to develop, plan and
execute a wireless sensor network related to a middle node using ZigBee, which in turn was
related to a Central Monitoring Station (CMS) from end to end General Packet Radio Service
(GPRS) or Global System for Mobile (GSM) technologies. The system also got Global
Positioning System (GPS) parameters associated to the field and sent them to a central
monitoring station. This system was usual to make easy farmers in evaluating soil situation and
be lively accordingly.
The objectives of the system were to develop a low-cost wireless controlled irrigation system,
to observe water satisfied of soil in real time, to remove the need for workmanship for
monitoring irrigation. The intended system has three unit specifically base station unit,
regulator unit and sensing unit which were applied for controlling drip irrigation of 1000 dwarf
cherry trees. The investigation of the system produced the approximately linear graph between
volumetric water content and time for which system was analyzed. This system provides the
facilities like low cost and reliable system, preventing moisture strain of trees, minimizing
extreme use of water and ensuring of rapid rising weeds. System may be more helpful by
allowing for other

2.2 Methodology
For successful completion of this project some steps will be followed to carry out different tasks.

9
Different literature will be revised relating to this project and data will be collected about
wireless controlling and monitoring of farm watering system. Based on this parameter system
model was designed. Some software's were selected to develop the software programming. All
the required materials are not available …….. software so some sensors like soil, Humidity and
Temperature sensors and conditional circuit were replaced by equivalent materials

2.3 Deliverance
 This system reduces the water usebecause it provides irrigation as per the requirement of
the crop
 It also reduces the human resources
 Wireless monitoring of field not only allows user to reduce the human power, but it also
allows user to see accurate changes in it.
 This wireless system was established to be feasible and cost effective for optimizing water
resources for farming production
 It can be attuned to a variety of specific crop which requires smallest amount maintenance.
 Using this system we can monitor the status of all the sensors (Soil-moisture, Temperature,
Water level) and also the ON/OFF status of the motor and Fan.
