INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
In English grammar, the degree of comparison is really important. Degree
of comparison can be used to describe the relational value of one thing with
something in another clause of a sentence. An adjective may simply describe a
quality, (the positive); it may compare the quality with that of another of its
kind (comparative degree); and it may compare the quality with many or all
others (superlative degree).
When we want to make comparison, we need to know the definition,
formula, example, and some guides. Because of this, in this task the writer want to
tell and give informations about the definition of comparison, the kinds of
comparison, the formulas of comparison, the examples of comparison and guides
when we make comparison. Hopefully, by doing this task we can fulfill our
obligation as colleger and increase our knowledge about comparison.

1.2 Problem Formulation

The problem formulation is what is the different between positive degree,
comparative degree, and superlative degree?

1.3 Objective of Study

The objective of study is to know the different between positive degree,
comparative degree, and superlative degree.
CHAPTER II

LITERATURE REVIEW

Comparison is a way to compare or contrast between two people or whole

people, places, things, or ideas. There are three type of comparison:
1. Positive degree
Positive degree can be used to compare something that has same quality of
work or characteristic. When we use postive degree, we need to use as. After that,
we use adjective without change form of adjective. The formula of positive degree
is subject + to be + as + adjective+ as + object. Here are the example of positive
degree:
a. Tini is as tall as Tina.
b. Chandra is as smart as his older brother.
c. Raisa is as beautiful as the moon.
d. You are as old as Dhani's father.
If we want to show the inequality between the objects and other things we could
add "not" after to be. The formula is subject + to be + not + as + adjective +
object. The examples are:
a. The man is not as old as my father
b. Dela is not as clever as Icha

2. Comparative degree
Comparative degree can be used to compare two things that has different
quality of work or characteristic, where there is something that has more than
other. In this comparison, we need to add -er in the last words of adjective or add
more in front of the adjective. Not only that, we need to put than before the object.
The formulas are:
1. For one or two syllable adjective, we use subject + to be + adjective + -er
+ than +object.
The examples are:
a. He is taller than me.
b. Lee Chong Wei is stronger than Simon Santoso.

2. For three or more syllable adjective, we use subject + to be + more +

adjective + than + object.
The examples are:
a. Anna is more dilligent than Luthfi.
b. Novel is more interesting than comic.

3. Superlative degree
Superlative degree can be used when two things compare with one
another, where there is the most than the others. We need to add -est in the last
word of the adjective or add most in front of the adjective. Do not forget to add
before adjective. The has meaning to emphatic. The formula is subject + to be +
the + adjective + -est + object or subject + to be + the + most + adjective + object.
The examples are:
a. Sahrul is the tallest boy among us.
b. Mr. Susilo is the oldest man in the meeting.
c. Taj Mahal is the most luxorious cemertry in the world.
d. Christiano Ronaldo is the most expensive football player in the world.

When we want to write comparative and superlative degree, we need to

consider with some guides.
We add “er” and “est” to create comparative or superlative degree.
Positive Comparative Superlative
Clean Cleaner Cleanest
Cold Colder Coldest
Old Older Oldest
High Higher Highest
Young Younger Youngest
We add "er" to create comparative and "est" to create superlative for words
that has consonant words between others.
Positive Comparative Superlative
Hot Hotter Hottest
Fat Fatter Fattest
Big Bigger Biggest

Wet Wetter Wettest

We need to change “y” into “i” . Adter that we need to add

“er” for comparative and “est” for superlative.
Positive Comparative Superlative
Heavy Heavier Heaviest
Busy Busier Busiest
Happy Happier Happiest
Lazy Lazier Laziest
Lucky Luckier Luckiest

We need to add "more" and "most" for three or more syllable.

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION

Positive degree have a formula subject+tobe+as+adjective+as+object.

While comperative degree we use subject+tobe+adjective+-er+than+object for
one or two syllable. We use subject+tobe+more+adjective+than+object for three
or more syllable. Last, we use superlative to compare the most than others. We
need to add -est in the last word of the adjective or add most in front of the
