May 2018
Dear parents and carers,
We hope you all had a great Easter break! Welcome to our Summer newsletter which, as always, is
designed to let you know about the topics for this term and to inform you about homework, upcoming
trips and how you can get involved.
This term our learning will revolve around the
theme of ‘Inventors and Innovators’. The
challenge question for the whole school is:
How can we think globally and act
locally?
We will be looking at growth and change in nature; to promote the interest in children to look after and
care for the environment
If there is any way that you c an help us with this, either directly or via contacts you have
please get in touch!
▪ As Scientists we will be conducting minibeast experiments and we will observe growth
and change.
▪ As Geographers we will grow plants and vegetables.
▪ As Artists and Designers we will help to develop our forest school area/wild garden
▪ As Users of technology we will be conduct research using iPads/chromebooks/apps
Homework
We will continue setting homework using the Home Diaries. Although homework is optional, it is good for the
children to reinforce what is being taught at school.
Reading
The children should be reading their school reading books weekly at home. Please write a comment in their
reading record book to let us know how your child is getting on with their reading at home. It is really important
that your child brings their book bag and reading record every day, otherwise reading books cannot be changed.

using this useful videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMyssfAUx0

Maths
Please encourage children to play counting games at home including: snakes and ladders, dominoes or
educational games online e.g. Busy Things. h ttp://busythings.lgfl.org.uk/
Cooking is a great way to cover a lot of practical maths skills such a time, measure, halving, doubling etc.
Home diary
Home Diaries will come home on Fridays for your child to add something about what they have done at home
and please remember to return it to school on Monday.
Reception Fund
We ask for a voluntary contribution of 50p a week to buy ingredients for cooking, making playdough and other
activities that children enjoy.
Thank you for your fantastic contribution during our International Food Night, we are using the money to buy
ingredients like, flour, salt, corn flour, etc in bulk.
Junk Modelling
The children love to make models using recycled materials. We are always in need of boxes (e.g. cereal boxes,
biscuit boxes) milk lids, tubs, yoghurt pots, cardboard tubes, corks etc. Plastic bottles of different sizes. Any of
these items you could bring in would be greatly appreciated. (Clean and not too big please!)
Summer Months
As the weather gets hotter in the next few months please remember to bring in a clearly labelled sunscreen bottle
and a sunhat if you feel your child will need them as we can not provide these. We will continue to have drinking
water available at all times throughout the day but feel free to bring an extra bottle if you wish.
