11th May 2018 Dear parents and carers,
Welcome to our Summer newsletter which, as always, is designed to let you know about the topics for this term and to inform you about homework, PE and swimming.
This term our learning will revolve around the theme of ‘Inventors and Innovators’. T he challenge question for the whole school is:
How can we think globally and act locally?
Each class will contribute to the challenge by taking action in the local area to help to solve a global environmental issue with specific focus on Science, Maths and Computing. We will then host a Science Fair to celebrate our innovations! If there is any way that y ou can help us with this, either directly or via contacts you have please get in touch! ▪ As Scientists we will learn what plants need to grow and plant flowering plants in our playground to attract wildlife. ▪ As Artists we will use sculpture and create clay flowers and papier mache bees to share ideas, experiences and imaginations. As designers we will build bee houses. ▪ As Geographers we will map areas for planting. ▪ As Users of technology we will research plants to grow in our school grounds and create videos to share our environmental message worldwide.
Homework As a Google school, we will continue setting our homework through Google Classroom. If you are having any problems please visit the letters page of our website where answers to Frequently Asked Questions are posted.
Each Friday the children will receive Spelling, Maths and English or Topic homework which will need to be handed in by the following Wednesday.
Reading- Please ensure your child is reading at home as often as possible. Please write a comment in their yellow reading record book to let us know how your child is getting on with reading at home. It is really important that your child brings their book bag and reading record book to school every day. If your child has lost their book / reading diary there is now a standard charge on Parent Pay called ‘book donation ‘ . Please promptly complete this payment and notify your class teacher so we can replace your childs book. Spellings- Spellings will be given every Friday and a test to be completed in Read, Write Inc lessons on the following Friday. The words from the next week set of story books will be given out as well so that the children can practise reading them at home. Children no longer on the RWI programme will continue to receive weekly spellings . Maths - Maths will consist of a game or activity that will support them in their learning in Maths lessons for the following week, or review what they have covered in the current week.
Time tables Here is a basic timetable of things that happen each week. Please note- some afternoon lessons are subject to change.
Please ensure that your child brings the correct kit for swimming on Thursday (Victory Class) / Friday (Nelson Class) - including a swimsuit, towel, swimming hat (for long hair), no earrings, goggles optional. I f you wish for your child to be excused from swimming or P.E, your child must have a note for Mr Waller.
We would be extremely grateful if any parents who are free on a Thursday / Friday afternoon are able to assist us as we go swimming. Classes leave the school at 12.45pm promptly so that the children are able to enjoy a story at the library. Please speak to any of the Year 1 teachers or Marianne at the office if you are able to join us.
Summer School Uniform It has been exciting to see a bit of sunshine recently! Please remember our uniform policy states children should wear sturdy shoes. P lease avoid open toed sandals, flip flops and sunglasses for safety reasons. Thank you for your support.
