Born in Caracas, Venezuela. Rafael currently lives
and works in Miami, Florida. Since he can
remember he has given importance to two things:
internal discovery and art. He has developed his
life around them both. His desire is to show his
inner quest experience. All his work is rooted on
Mandalas, especially the Flower of Life. Mandalas
like numerology exist in all religions. Thus, the
basis of his proposal is spiritual. On his internal
search, Montilla has been fortunate to travel the
world and thus experimented and learned from the
richness of different cultures and religions, which
have nourished his soul. These experiences, either
his own or from others is what he manifests
through his art work. Maria Luisa, his beloved
H I V E R Y grandmother used to say, “God has more to give us
than we ask him for.” She was right explains
Montilla, God has given us Mother Nature. He is
grateful and pleased to brighten the eyes and the
spirit of others through his artwork.

His creative process arises from a feeling. The

place where he photographs is one that fulfills his
spirit connecting him to the universe. He enjoys the
moment when he raises his spirit to be able to
capture the gift that is before his eyes. He feels,

appreciates and gratefully accepts this present, and
that is when he captures the photograph. When he
takes a photo all his senses become one and the
moment becomes sublime. He stops breathing for
a few seconds, then he is ready to capture the
moment which ends up being part of him, his
reflection, his essence. The next step on his
creative process is to diagram each geometric
figure and carefully choose the surface where it will
be printed. He is captivated by wood because it has
so much to give, as well as by metal, glass, fabric
or plastic. All these materials will end up projecting
the feelings he wants to offer the viewer. He always
seeks to innovate with new materials and surfaces
to print his photographs; each material, each
surface reflects his many feelings and stages of his
life. His camera is his partner, his friend and
together they look for the perfect moment and
place to express experiences, feelings and his
inner-self.
