ACT Vocab “Project”
It’s ACT prep time and that means building your vocabulary. Two of the best ways to improve your ACT
score are to improve your vocabulary and your writing skills. We have composed a list of 90 of the most
commonly used ACT/SAT vocab words and we’re going to help you learn them, really learn them, and
become better writers at the same time. Here’s how:
Step 1
Every other week, on Monday, you will be given a chart with 10 ACT vocab words. It is your homework
Monday night to fill in the chart with the dictionary definition, a definition in your own words, the part
of speech (verb, adjective, etc.) and synonyms. This chart is due in class TUESDAY without exception!
Step 2
On Wednesday of that week we will meet in the computer lab. BRING YOUR ACT VOCAB CHART FOR
THAT WEEK! We are calling this Wednesday “Free‐Write Wednesday”.
In the computer lab, log into your school e‐mail and open up Google Drive. In Drive, create a NEW
document and title it “YOUR NAME AND LAST INITIAL, fww & THE DATE” (for example: SARA O fww
Jan15). Once you have done this, SHARE the document with both Ms. McNeill and Ms. Oster:
mmcneill@maine207.org and soster@maine207.org
Step 3
This is the fun part. You have the whole period to write anything you want. This means you can write a
poem, a story, an essay, a journal entry, etc. and it can be about your dog, how you enjoy jigsaw puzzles,
your love for spaghetti, etc. Think school appropriate. There are only 3 requirements: 1. You MUST
spend the period writing. 2. You MUST write this alone. 3. You MUST use 7‐10 of the 10 vocab words for
that week. As you’re writing, we will be popping in and out of your documents to give occasional
feedback on grammar, style, punctuation, etc. It is your responsibility to go back and edit your piece of
writing before the end of the period. Our goal is to give you a grade directly on your document by the
end of the day. Instant feedback!
You may be wondering, “What’s so cool about spending the whole period writing?” The answer is three‐
fold. 1. You get to apply your knowledge of ACT vocab to a topic of your choosing, 2. You get to write
anything you want, 3. You get nearly instant feedback on your writing which will help you improve your
writing skills.
You may also be wondering, “What if I don’t have anything to write about?” Our solution: You can a) see
one of us and request a writing prompt, or, b) take your chances with Ms. Oster’s “Storymatic” box
