LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE
In this lesson…
The students will learn what a scale/balance is and how to balance each side of
Overview the scale by adding or subtracting weight from one side and having the students
balance it out.

What is a scale?
How can you use a scale?
Essential Questions How can you balance a scale by adding more or subtracting from a side?
What happens if one side of the scale weighs more than the other side?

Students will be able to… recognize and use a scale and add or subtract weight
Objectives from a side of the scale in order to keep them balanced.

I will be able to recognize a scale and balance the sides to show they are of
Learning Target equal weight.
Students will need to be able to add and subtract simple numbers
Necessary Prior Students must be able to recognize when numbers are equal

Materials Worksheet

Have students put their pencils in each side of the scale to see which weighs
more and have them add more pencils to each side to see what happens to the

1. Call students up by pre-assigned group to work at teacher table.

5. Move on to worksheet and go over all problems with them except the
last one
6. Have students head back to their own seat and work on last problem
alone
7. Students will bring completed worksheet back to me
