Pentecost Sunday
May 20, 2018
May the Holy Spirit descend upon you at this time of Pentecost!
We welcome Fr. David Convertino, OFM, Executive Director of Development at Holy Name Province, to
this weekend’s liturgies. As many of you know, most of the friars at the Shrine belong to the Holy Name
Province of the Order of Friars Minor. Our Motherhouse Church is the beautiful St. Francis of Assisi
Church on West 31st Street in Manhattan. We friars very much identify Holy Name Province as our
family. This weekend Fr. David asks for money for the work of the larger province, especially the good
work of educating young friars and caring for older friars in their retirement. Thank you for your
generosity.
With Father's Day just around the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
corner, please check out the Pope Francis established a new feast for the Catholic
Father's Day Mass Cards Church to be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost.

THE FRANCISCAN CHALLENGE
Q & A’s
The Franciscan Friars ask not for themselves, but for the sake of others, and
often do so with some embarrassment and hesitation. However, there are times
that need a stronger call, and that is now. The Friars, in our “tradition of
begging” are asking for money for three very important causes:
1. For our young men who desire to become Franciscan Friars – We need
help for education and all its costs, their room and board and their
intern expenses.
2. For our work with the poor and desperate – Saint Francis traced the
beginning of his conversion to when God led him to live among lepers
to serve them. Ever since that time, direct service to the materially poor
and marginalized people of society has been a hallmark of Franciscan
ministry. We are continuing that tradition over 800 years later.
3. For our sick and elderly Franciscan Friars – These Friars have served
so many for so long – and are now in need of care themselves. The cost
of their care has risen drastically while the quality of their care
depends on those of us whom they have served so well.
We are delighted to share our plans with you for this year’s Franciscan Dinner at the
Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. On Thursday, October 25, we will present the
distinguished Pope Francis Award to The Honorable Regina L. Quinlan-Doherty (ret.).
Regina, a native of Brighton, was in the religious community of The Congregation of the
Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston until 1969. She was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in
1973. Regina is widely known for her legal acumen, first-class temperament and backbone.
Governor William Weld appointed her to Superior Court in 1992, serving that court for 20
years.
This year’s gala will showcase women and their role in our Franciscan ministries. We could not be more proud to
recognize this esteemed woman. Regina built a career addressing social justice issues as an attorney, in her
charitable causes, and as a Superior Court Judge in Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
Regina’s life work mirrors the charism of St. Francis of Assisi. Social justice issues are at the core
of her philanthropic work.
Please join us in congratulating The Honorable Regina L. Quinlan-Doherty (ret.) as our 2018 Pope
Francis Award recipient.
