Persuasive speech

“Helping The Homeless Is A Good Deed”

Introduction

1. What would it be like to be homeless? Imagine not knowing where you

will sleep tonight. On a practical level, how would it feel not to have a
bath for weeks and to wear dirty clothes every day?

A. There are still many people in Malaysia who have no home of their
own. We have all seen people asking for money, who seem to have all
their possessions in a plastic bag, and nowhere to go.

B. Imagine you are in the situation of a homeless person, realizing that

there are hundreds of people just like you wondering the streets, you do
everything in your power to hold onto any last shred of hope you have.
You have to keep your head straight. Hopefully, things will turn around
tomorrow.

2. Homeless is defined as people who have nowhere to live, and who

often live on the streets.

3. Almost all countries in the world are facing this phenomenon.

4. From the experience I gained from participating in the program

conducted by an organisation called as JPK, I want to encourage all
of you to give your effort and time to help the homeless.

5. Due to the increase of the numbers of homeless in Malaysia, I would

like to persuade all of you to join any NGO’s or organisation that can
help reduce the needs of homeless in Malaysia.

(transition; We will now look into the reasons of homelessness in Malaysia)

Body

I. The number of homeless people in Kuala Lumpur have

increased by three-fold, from 600 in 2014 to at least 2,000 in
2015, based on a survey conducted by the Kuala Lumpur City
Council (DBKL).

A. The main reason people in Malaysia are homeless is because they

are facing poverty in their life.
i. Poverty happens when a family suffers negative financial
changes due to poor health, unemployment, and other
temporary events.
ii. The prices that keep on increasing actually burdened the
poor people to pay all the expenses due to economic
recession and lead the poor people to poverty.

B. Unaffordability of housing also becomes one of the causes why

people in Malaysia are homeless.
i. The house pricing that keeps increasing, makes people
decide to be homelessness rather than struggling finding
money to afford buying the house.
ii. The low-cost housing is not enough regarding to the
increase of the number of homeless.

(Transition: Now you know the reason of homelessness, the question is;
What can you do to help ?)
II. You can help by becoming a volunteer.

A. You can start by joining the operating soup kitchen such as

PERTIWI soup kitchen or Kechara soup kitchen (KSK).

i. Soup kitchens are run throughout the week in Kuala Lumpur

and they provide not just meals, but basic necessities like
milk, diapers, clothing, and health services to the homeless.
ii. The KSK team will be given their specific tasks at hand.
Such as team member helps out each homeless person
register by showing their identification cards.

B. If you don’t want to be involve as the soup kitchen team

member, there are other ways to help.

i. Instead of giving food to the homeless, we must teach them

on how to gain skills.
ii. Homeless children are given a chance to have a proper
education at Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK)
iii. Become a part time teacher to help the students excel in
education or vocational skills.
III. Yes, there are many ways to help the homeless, but I can
assure you that you will gain the most inspiring motivational
experience in your life.

A. As a volunteer, your help towards the homeless is like a special

gift for them.

i. You can provide them food, health check-ups, clothing and

provide services for those who want to get their hair cut.
ii. Johnson Khoo, an entrepreneur that participated as volunteer
at operating soup kitchen stated that “when you find out the
troubles the poor and homeless face every single day, you’ll
suddenly realize how trivial and insignificant our problems are
compared to theirs”

B. Not only benefit to us, but our help means so much to the
homeless.

i. In my experience, joining a program called “Singgah Sahur”, a

program conducted by student organisation which to help by
giving supply needs to the homeless is one of the most
satisfying things I have ever done.
ii. I witnessed myself the joy and happiness in the faces among
the unfortunate people that were forced to live under the bridge,
when we came to give them some daily needs such as foods,
sandals, towels, soap, toothbrush and etc.
IV. Now I would like to ask you to take the step of getting involved
with helping the homeless.

i. If you want more information, you can visit the Kechara soup
kitchen or Pertiwi soup kitchen here
http://www.kechara.com/soup-kitchen/get-involved/volunteer/
http://pertiwi.org.my/

ii. I also have the brochures with contact numbers of certain

others organisation that you can participate
iii. The most important thing is try to get involved in any way you
can or in whatever amount of time you can manage.

Conclusion

1. If you go to a movie, you will be entertained; if you bought a

brand new phone, you’ll feel happy, but the feeling of seeing a
genuinely thankful smile from someone receiving food from
you knowing that they only get such opportunity to eat proper
food a few times each week, is just priceless.
2. They say ‘charity begins at home’, and Malaysia is our home.
Even a simple help, means a lot to them. And trust me, what I
ask you to imagine at the beginning of my speech, is what they
are facing every day.
3. The lessons and insights learnt from these experiences might
also change your perspective on life forever.
