About the KIC InnoEnergy Master School Office

The KIC InnoEnergy Master School Office is responsible for stimulating and creating synergy effects
related to innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial involvement between all seven MSc
programmes, and works closely with all MSc programme directors. We organise the common
application process for all programmes and set up common events. In addition to this, we
collaborate with the KIC InnoEnergy Transition and Alumni Office to make the transition to the job
market as smooth and advantageous for students as possible.

Admission Criteria

To qualify for our programmes, applicants need to fulfill the admission requirements based on
previous studies, English proficiency and relevant documentation.

Previous Studies: A Completed Bachelor’s Degree

In order to be admitted into a KIC InnoEnergy MSc programme, you must have completed a
Bachelor’s degree encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or equivalent academic
qualifications from an internationally recognized university. Please note that admissions depend on
the specific BSc degree you hold for entry into the MSc programme you are interested in.

Conditional Acceptance – Undergraduate Students in Final Year

Students in their final year of undergraduate education may also apply and if expected to qualify,
receive a conditional offer. If you have not completed your studies, please include a written
statement from your university’s administration office (or equivalent department), confirming that
you are enrolled in the final year of your study programme and stating your expected completion
date. If you receive a conditional offer, you should present your degree certificate to the KIC
InnoEnergy Admissions Office before your admission can be finalised. The KIC InnoEnergy
Admissions Office will forward your application to your appointed Year 1 university so that your
application can be completed.

Applicants who have studied longer technical programmes and who have completed courses
equivalent to an amount of 180 ECTS, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

English Proficiency

Applicants must provide proof of their English language proficiency, which is generally established
through an internationally recognized test. Please note that in order to be considered for one of our
programmes, we need to receive your test result before 1 April 2015 when you are applying in the
first application round and 1 June 2015 if you are applying in the second application round. Any
scores received after those deadlines will not be considered. Therefore, it is important that you
plan your test well ahead of the deadlines. Please note that it can take up to six weeks to receive
test scores. The following tests and scores are accepted:

General English Proficiency Requirements

IELTS Academic test (www.ielts.org)

An overall band score of at least 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5, is required. IELTS tests are
verified online by the Admissions office. Sending a photocopy of your test together with your
application documents is therefore sufficient.

TOEFL Internet-based test, IBT (www.toefl.org)

A total score of at least 92 (with the writing section scoring at least 22) is required. English test
results from TOEFL must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The
institution code you need to use (0683) is exclusive to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
This code is used regardless of the location of your studies at KIC InnoEnergy. For KIT, you should
choose the option ‘any department not listed’ and then you can manually enter the name of the
KIC InnoEnergy programme. Examinee score reports or photocopies are not accepted.

Please note that it can take several weeks for your test scores to arrive from ETS, so arrange for
them to be sent as early as possible.

University of Cambridge / University of Oxford Certificates

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): grades A – C are accepted.

Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grades A – C are accepted.

For the University of Cambridge Certificates: please provide your Candidate ID (3 letters and 6
numbers) and Secret number (4 digits) in our online application form, such that we can verify your
results online. If not available, you will need to send a certified copy of your Cambridge Certificate
by regular mail before the deadline.

Validity of English test results

Results of IELTS and TOEFL are valid from two years of the date of the exam. The same holds for
CPE/CAE certificates. If you can show proof that you have maintained your English proficiency since
then, we will consider this on a case by case basis.

English proficiency tests are waived for applicants who:

 Have completed a higher education degree fully instructed in English at auniversity or a

university of applied sciences in an EU/EEA country. The official language of the degree
programme has to be stated in the degree certificate or its supplement, or in the transcript
of records. Statements by professors are not accepted. Other documentation regarding
language of instruction will not be accepted.
 Have completed a degree in English at a university located in one of the following
countries: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand.

Programme Specific Requirements

 Aside from the above general eligibility criteria, each programme comes with their specific
requirements with regards to particular degrees allowed, and in some cases minimum GPA
needed for acceptance.

Application Instructions

Please read the admission requirements and application instructions before preparing your
application.

Step 1: Preparation

Applications to the KIC InnoEnergy MSc programmes are carried out through an online application
form. You cannot save your progress as you complete the form, so you will need to make sure you
are prepared before you begin. When completing the application form, you will need to upload
certain documents, so we advise that you have these ready beforehand.

Step 2: KIC InnoEnergy’s Online Application Form

When you have prepared your documents, you can begin completing KIC InnoEnergy’s online
application form (link will be activated when the application period opens).

You will need to register your personal details (name, birth date, contact information), previous
education, overall grade point average, as well as answer a number of questions related to your
personal experiences and character. Throughout the application form, you will also be asked to
upload the documents that you prepared earlier. In this form, you can also indicate which
programmes you are interested in studying by indicating up to two you want to apply for.

Per programme of interest, you will also be asked to indicate your preferred study location for year
1. If you are accepted, we will try to accommodate your wishes as best as we can but we cannot
guarantee this. Please note, that the mobility placement for year 2 will be decided by the particular
programme director/programme committee in January of your first academic year, taking your
preferred choices into consideration.

Step 3: Acceptance

If you are accepted to one of the KIC InnoEnergy MSc programmes, you will be asked to send
officially certified copies of your transcripts and BSc diploma to the KIC InnoEnergy Admissions
Office for verification. Only after we have received the certified copies of your documents, will your
admission be complete.

Required Documents

All applicants need to upload the following documents together with their application as separate
pdfs. Please prepare all documents before you begin the application form, as it is not possible to
save your progress throughout. Please read the Admission Criteria and detailed Application
Instructions before preparing your documents. You will need:

1. A copy of your bachelor’s degree in its original language and a translated version into
English. (Read more about conditional acceptance in the case of ongoing studies). If you
have already completed a master’s degree, also include a copy of this degree.
2. A copy of your transcript of records in their original language and a translated version into
English. This information should include all the courses you have taken and your Grade
Point Average (GPA) or average score. If you are unable to provide information about your
maximum/minimum GPA, please submit a statement from your university confirming these
scores.
3. Proof of English proficiency.
4. Curriculum Vitae including details on your academic and professional career.
5. A copy of your passport or other relevant identification in English.
6. Only for students applying to the programme EMINE and Energy for Smart Cities: please
include a motivation letter stating your reasons for applying to the programme.

Document Requirements

Applications will be processed on the basis of your digital application documents. If you are
accepted into one of our programmes, you will need to provide certified copies of these documents.
With certified copies we mean copies of degree certificates, transcripts of records and statements
that have been stamped and signed by the degree administration’s office (or equivalent
department) of the issuing institution, or by a Notary Public. Statements made by professors or the
heads of departments are not accepted. Applications with fraudulent documents will invariably be
rejected.

Country Specific Documentation Requirements

For degrees awarded in Cameroon, Canada, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria or USA an official
transcript of records must be sent in a sealed envelope directly from the issuing university.

Degrees awarded in Pakistan need to be attested by the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan.
Each page of the transcript of records as well as the degree certificate has to be stamped and
signed by HEC. We only accept documents attested after 1 March 2009, for reasons of verification.
In case of acceptance to one of our MSc programmes, the HEC attestation needs to reach the KIC
InnoEnergy Admissions Office at the same time as the certified copies of your degree and
transcript. Your admission will remain conditional until the HEC attestation has arrived, so please
send those as soon as possible. If you already have them in your online application, this will speed
up your admission.

Students with Chinese nationality who would like to complete part of their studies in the
Netherlands need a Nuffic certificate in order to complete their admission and get a visa. The
Certificate can only be used for your residence permit application in the Netherlands and is made
digitally available to the Dutch higher education institution you selected. They will forward it to the
Dutch immigration authorities for your entry visa application. Please start prepare your application
for a Nuffic certificate at the same time as you start your application for one of our programmes.

Chinese students applying to study in Germany or Belgium, will need an APS.

Documents attested by the HEC or an APS can be scanned and added to your application in the
online form if these are already available. If not yet available, they can be added to the application
later. If you are accepted, you will need to send the paper copy of the HEC attestation to KIC
InnoEnergy and the confirmation of the Nuffic certificate or APS to the university where you will
study in your first year.

Ranking and Selection

The number of study places available is limited and the application process is highly competitive. In
addition to our interest in your motivation for learning about sciences and technology in the field of
energy, we are also interested in your entrepreneurial spirit and passion for innovation.

Applications are processed in three steps:

1. Document legacy and eligibility control regarding academic background and English
proficiency (KIC InnoEnergy Admissions Office)
2. Control of specific admission requirements for each programme applied for (Programme
Evaluation Committee)
3. Ranking (Programme Evaluation Committee)

The ranking is based on a total evaluation of criteria including academic excellence as well as your
motivation and relevant experiences. The assessment will be based on your submitted documents
and input into the on-line application form. In addition, you may be called for an interview in the
last stage of the evaluation (ranking).

Evaluation Outcome

1. During the first evaluation step you will be notified by the Admissions Office. They will start
processing your application as soon as they have received it. You may receive a message
about incomplete or insufficient documentation, or in regards to not meeting the admission
criteria on the grounds of academic background or English proficiency. You can submit your
application up until the deadlines advertised. Late applications will not be processed.
2. During the second evaluation step, specific requirements are evaluated by the respective
programmes’ Evaluation Committee.
3. During the third step, applicants who fulfill all requirements are ranked using a series of
selection criteria. After the third evaluation step students will be notified by e-mail by the
KIC InnoEnergy Admissions Office.

Please be aware that being accepted to a KIC InnoEnergy MSc programme does not guarantee that
you will be assigned a study place in your preferred location. Selected applicants will be offered a
study trajectory for year 1 in the programme based on preference and availability. If an applicant
cannot be offered a seat in the preferred study trajectory an alternative track will be offered.

unique activities that turn the KIC InnoEnergy Master School into an extraordinary and extremely
valuable opportunity for students interested in becoming entrepreneurs in the energy field. Part of
the costs for your education will be borne by you and part by KIC InnoEnergy. Students should
therefore be aware that if you get a study grant, that this is not necessarily a full scholarship, and
that it may be necessary to find additional funding to be able to fully finance study and stay. Costs
related to events integrated in the curriculum, e.g. Kick-off, innovation seminars and summer
schools are covered by the programme, and included in the participation fee.

How to apply for a scholarship? When applying for one of our MSc programmes, please tick the
appropriate box in the application form that you would like to apply for a scholarship.

Scholarship levels: Scholarships are awarded to the highest ranking applicants per programme;
scholarship levels depend on the budget available for each programme and may therefore vary.
The ranking is based on several criteria such as academic performance, quality of previous
education and university, experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, etc. Please note that it
is not possible to appeal decisions in relation to scholarships; the selection results (ranking) as
such do not constitute grounds for an appeal. It is not possible to transfer a KIC InnoEnergy MSc
scholarship to another KIC InnoEnergy programme or to a non-KIC InnoEnergy programme.

Please note: A scholarship paid in Poland is presently subject to taxation in accordance with the
provisions of Polish law. Subject to certain conditions, benefits paid by an entity having its
registered office outside of Poland may be exempt from tax on the basis of Article 21 points 39, 40
and 40b of the Act of 26 July 1991. AGH shall endeavour to arrange a tax exemption for the
Student. However, a final decision in this regard is issued by the Polish Ministry of Science and
Higher Education in accordance with the binding provisions on personal income tax (Journal of
Laws of 2012 No. 361 as amended).

Appeals

If you do not agree with the decision of your application for one of the KIC InnoEnergy MSc
programmes, please contact the KIC InnoEnergy Admissions Office via e-mail
(admissionsoffice@kic-innoenergy.com). If, after discussing the reasons for the decision, you still
do not agree, you may formally appeal the decision. As not all decisions constitute grounds for an
appeal, it is important that you read through the following information first.

Restrictions regarding appeals

As the selection to MSc programmes at the KIC InnoEnergy Master School is made on the basis of
set entry requirements for each MSc programme and the verified qualifications submitted by the
applicant until the announced deadline, only decisions about general and specific entry
requirements may be appealed. Therefore it is not possible to appeal decisions in relation to
scholarships.

Late or incomplete applications, cancelled programmes or the selection result (ranking) as such do
not constitute grounds for an appeal.

Appeals Form

 In order to speed up the process and facilitate a fair assessment, you must fill in the appeals form
in English, print and sign the form and send it to the Admissions Office. Please enclose also a copy
of your Notification of selections results. The Admissions Office will forward your appeal to the
respective Programme Committee.

In your appeal, you must state which MSc Programme and Year 1 university the appeal concerns,
the decision you’re appealing and the reason for the appeal. Should you want to make an appeal
for more than one MSc programme, you have to complete and print a separate form for each MSc
programme.

Time Limit

The appeals form must reach the KIC InnoEnergy Admissions Office no later than four weeks after
the date that the e-mail with the results of the selection process has been sent to you.

Response to the Appeal

The Programme Committee to which you appeal will re-assess your eligibility and if any
documentation has been disregarded, a new decision will be made. You will be informed in writing
by the Admissions Office. If you disagree with the outcome of the re-assessment the Admissions
Office will forward your appeal to the Appeals Board of KIC InnoEnergy, which will make the final
decision.

Even if the Appeals Board upholds your appeal, there is no guarantee that you will be able to begin
the programme during the current academic year; you may be required to wait until the next time
the programme is offered.

 "What is the EIT label?"

EIT-labelled master programmes fulfil the high criteria for education, entrepreneurship and
innovation set by the EIT. All of our KIC InnoEnergy master programmes carry the EIT label. You

 "What tasks and projects will I be set during the programme?"

The content of each master programme is highly variable. Nevertheless, you can generally expect
projects to be based on real cases and include visits to companies in the field. We encourage

 industry collaboration during lectures and in some cases, you can join a company for your
internship and thesis work.

 "When does the semester start? Is there a calendar for the next academic year?"

All programmes start in the autumn semester although the exact month varies depending on your
programme. In general, programmes start between August and October with our MSc Clean Fossil
and Alternative Fuels Energy having an additional entry date in March.

 "What minimum qualifications do I need to enroll in one of your programmes?"

You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or
have equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognized university. Please note
that the specific BSc degree required depends on the actual MSc programme. You can find out
more about our admission criteria here.

 "Is there a recommended reading list for my master programme?"

You will receive information about recommended reading on the first day of classes. In some
courses, teachers provide texts and digital material. You will also have access to e-books, scientific
articles and books at your university.

 "As a master student, am I required to complete an internship? Do they count

towards my degree?"

Internships are compulsory in most of our programmes. In others, internships are optional and can
serve as a supplement to the thesis project. However, the options may vary depending on your
university.

 "Is it possible to do the thesis/graduation project within a company?"

Yes, this option is available. We encourage students to complete their graduation project within a
company, particularly if they are interested in gaining professional experience.

 "Where can I find more information about the content of each programme?"

The content for each specific programme is available on our website. This information should give
you an overview of the content studied throughout the academic year.

 "What is the minimum I should expect to spend each month to cover my living
expenses?"

Your living expenses depend very much on location and personal preference. A rough estimate
would be €750 per month to cover housing, food, books, travel and personal expenses. This
amount is the monthly allowance we offer in our scholarships.

 "Is the cost of books covered in the scholarship?"

Each university gives you free access to readers, e-books, books and journals in its library. The
cost of any additional books will be subsidised by students themselves.

 "What qualification will I receive after completing a KIC master programme?"

After successfully completing the programme, you’ll receive a double degree, one from each
university you attended during the programme, as well as a KIC-EIT certificate that recognises the
extra activities you completed. You can find more information about the degrees on our Thesis
Project and Degree pages.

 "Can I bring my wife / husband and children with me?"

If you need a visa to study in Europe, you may find that the financial requirements for bringing
your family are higher than those if you were travelling by yourself. However, these rules and
regulations differ per country. Moreover, if you need assistance in finding housing, you may find
that universities often do not have rooms that cater for families. For these reasons, bringing your
family may present some challenges. However, it’s not discouraged.

 "Can I study part time?"

No, our programmes are designed for full-time study only. Remember that our programmes include
study in two different countries and that several study trips are organised each year.

 "How can I find out about employment opportunities after graduation? What are the
job prospects, for example?"

Each university has information on employment opportunities in their own career centres. We also
promote vacancies from our industrial partners to our students and alumni. The KIC InnoEnergy
Transition and Alumni Office will also help you gain a foothold in the labour market after your
graduation.

 How can I get in touch with KIC students or alumni to talk with them about the
programmes, etc?"

A number of our alumni enjoy sharing their experience and are available to answer your questions.
The best way to make enquiries is to consult the ‘meet our students’ section on the website where
you can find videos, interviews and news related to our students and graduates. Another option is
to contact the programme director and ask to get in touch with them.

 "Do I need health insurance?"

This depends on the country you will be studying in and the university you apply to. Please follow
the instructions in your year 1 university admission letter.

 "Is there an introduction/orientation week before starting my studies? And is it

mandatory?"

This depends on the university you choose. Please follow the instructions you receive from your
year 1 university and your programme director.

 "Do you offer help with accommodation? What type of housing is available, and how
do I apply for it? How about in my second year? Will I be offered help in moving to my
second year university?"

All universities in the KIC InnoEnergy Master School are used to hosting international students in
their programmes. Most universities have housing available for international students and will be
able to support you in your search. This holds both for the first and second year of your studies.

The types and prices of accommodation differ per university and you can find more information on
each university´s website. You can start your search at our overview of partner universities.

 "How do I know that you have received my application?"

Once you have completed the online application form, you will receive an automatic confirmation
e-mail with your application number. Please use this application number in your correspondence
with the Admissions Office. If you do not receive the confirmation e-mail, this means that we have
not received your application.

 I would like to change my study programme/I made a mistake in my application. Can

I still change this?

Once you have submitted your application form online, you cannot make any more changes.
However, you can send an e-mail to the Admissions Office at admissionsoffice@kic-innoenergy.com
detailing your change request and we will try our best to accommodate you.

 "When is the deadline to send in my application documents?"

 How many programmes can I apply for?"

You can apply for a maximum of two KIC InnoEnergy MSc programmes.

 Is there an assessment exam or interview?"

You can find more information about the ranking and selection procedure here. You may be asked
to attend an interview in the final stage of the selection process.

 "Should my scanned documents be in colour or black and white?"

Either will be accepted.

 "Should I send certified copies with my application?"

No, you do not need to send in certified copies when you apply through our online application
system. Digital copies of your documents are sufficient at this stage. However, if you are accepted
on to one of our programmes, you will need to send in certified paper copies of your degree and
transcripts in order to finalise your acceptance.

 "Should I send in copies of my high school diplomas?"

No, you only need to focus on your university degree(s). You can find more information about the

do I need to send all the documents again?"

 "Do I need to send in paper copies of my documents?"

 In principle, you can do the entire application online and you do not need to send in any paper
copies of your documents until you have been accepted. However, depending on your
circumstances, some students may need to send in paper copies of their documents alongside their
initial application. If you are accepted by one of the programmes, you will need to send us certified
copies of your degrees and transcripts. You can find more information about this here.

 "Do you accept late applications?"

For your application to be considered for the first application round, we need to have received your
application by 22 February 2015. If you are unable to send us all your documents by then, please
consider applying for the second application round. To do this, you will need to complete the on-
line application form again. To be considered for the second application round, we need to have a
complete application by 26 April 2015. Please note, that no KIC InnoEnergy scholarships are
available for non-EU students during the second application round. We do not accept applications
for the 2015 intake after 26 April 2015.

 "I am about to finish my Bachelor’s Degree, is it possible to apply and obtain a

conditional admission?"

Yes. For more information about conditional acceptance in the case of ongoing studies, please see.

 "Is a GRE score required?"

No, it is not required but you are free to upload your GRE score together with the rest of your
application documents.

 "How long does the admission process lasts? When can I expect a reply?"

 "Will you inform me if my application is declined?"

 Yes, all applicants will receive a notification with their selection results.

 "What are my chances of being admitted to the programme? Can I send you my CV
so that you can give me an indication of my suitability?"

Unfortunately, we’re unable to indicate whether or not you will be suitable. Some programmes
have high “programme specific requirements” including minimum GPA. You have to check with the
individual programmes here.

All eligible candidates are evaluated further and ranked based on GPA, the content of previous
studies, the quality of their previous university and other relevant experience. Only the highest
ranked are accepted.

The best way to find out if you will be suitable is to send in your application. Unfortunately, we
cannot carry out any pre-assessments of your documents.

 "Can I defer my admission until next year?"

No, this is not possible. If you have been accepted, but cannot take the offer, you will need to
apply again next year. Because student rankings may have a different outcome, we cannot
guarantee that you will be admitted again.

 "Can students enter the program in the Spring semester?"

Most programmes only have an intake in the Fall semester. The only programme that has an
admission both in the Fall and in the Spring semester is Clean Fossil and Alternative Fuels Energy.

 "Where can I find information on visa applications?"

If you are accepted by one of our programmes, you will also receive an admission letter from the
university you applied to for your first year. You can use this admissions letter together with the
programme acceptance letter as part of your visa application.

 "The university I studied at does not follow the GPA system, but students are graded
on the basis of percentage. So the transcripts do not include the information about
GPA. To complete the application there is a requirement of min GPA, max GPA and
a scanned copy of the GPA attained. What should I do?"

If your university uses a percentage grading system, please indicate your GPA as a percentage and
include your transcript in the application. If the Admissions Office has any questions about your
transcript, they will contact you directly.

 "What documents should I send in with my application? Is a CV and motivation letter

necessary?"

 "Do I need to send reference letters with my application?"

Letters of reference are not required. However, if you have them, you can submit them with your
other documents. Our programmes consider several factors when assessing your background and
suitability for a programme and reference letters could be a valuable resource (if they are
“personal” enough to show your uniqueness and merits). However, these are not a neccesity.

 "How can I prove that I am an EU citizen? Is an ID-card okay instead of a passport?"

By ‘EU students’, we mean students with citizenship in one of the EEA countries (all EU member
states and Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland) or Switzerland. ‘Non-EU students’ are therefore
classified as all students who do not comply with the above definition of an ‘EU student’.

In order to prove that you are an EU citizen and therefore, in case of acceptance, granted a tuition
fee waiver, you need to send a photocopy of your passport or a photocopy of a valid identity card.
This should clearly state your citizenship and the card’s expiration date. For the ID card to be
considered valid, your copy must reach us a maximum of 3 months after the expiration date has
passed. (For example, if the last valid day is 5th May, your copy must reach us latest by 5th
August.)

For citizens of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland who do not have a valid passport or ID card, you
can submit an official document which certifies your citizenship. This document must be certified,

 stamped and must reach us a maximum of 3 months after the expiration date has passed. Please
note that this document must be officially translated to English, French or German if it has been
issued in a language other than these three.

 "I am applying from Pakistan. I have completed my Bachelor’s Degree programme

but my university has not yet issued a Degree Certificate, Can I send a Provisional
Certificate attested by Notary Public?"

All academic documents from Pakistan have to be attested by the Higher Education Commission
(HEC) in order to be assessed. We recommend you contact HEC and let them attest all your
transcripts and your Provisional certificate.

 "I am an applicant from China. If I choose Netherlands, Germany or Belgium as my

preferred location, do I have to obtain a Nuffic certificate or APS before I apply?"

If applying to Belgium:

Please visit the KU Leuven website to see if you need to apply for an APS or
not: http://www.kuleuven.be/application/FAQ.html. The answer is under question 14.

If applying to Germany:

This is also a prerequisite imposed by Germany itself, to make sure that documents like
certificates, etc. are genuine. In these cases, documents are reviewed and the candidate
interviewed before he/she can apply to a university in Germany. This following website may be

If applying to Netherlands:

All Chinese students coming to the Netherlands need a Nuffic certificate in order to be eligible to
study in the country and to apply for a VISA. The relevant information is available from the

certificate-for-chinese-students

Nuffic is the Dutch organization responsible for all exchange students. Students need to apply for
this certificate by themselves and this procedure is independent of the application process.

 "I am in my final semester and have not completed my BSc degree yet. Can I still
apply?"

Students in their final year of undergraduate education may also apply and if qualified, receive a
conditional offer. If you have not completed your studies, please include a written statement from
the degree administration office (or equivalent department), confirming that you are enrolled on
the final year of your education and giving your expected completion date. If you receive a
conditional offer, you should present your degree certificate to the KIC InnoEnergy Admissions
Office before your admission in a specific programme can be formalized. The KIC InnoEnergy
Admission Office will forward this to your programme, and appointed Year 1 university, such that
your admission can be completed.

 "What information do you need about my GPA?"

Your transcript should contain information about your Grade Point Average (GPA or average score)
and also about the minimum and maximum possible scores at your university. If this information is
not on your transcript, please ask your university to write a statement with this information.

 "Do I need an apostil on my documents?"

A correctly certified copy is a photocopy that is signed and stamped by the degree administration
of the issuing university, or by a notary public. You do not need an apostil, we will accept copies of
your transcripts and degree if the copies are signed and stamped by the degree administration of
the issuing university or a notary public. A translation must be made by a licensed translator.

 "Am I required to take an English test in order to start any of these master’s
programme?"

Most people are. You can find the requirements here.

 "What English language tests do you accept?"

 "What are the deadlines for sending in my English language test?"

You can find the deadlines here.

 "Can I get a conditional acceptance and send my English test result later? "

We do not offer the possibility to be conditionally accepted for the English requirements. However,
the deadline to send in your English test is several weeks after the deadline for sending in the rest
of your application. You can find more information about the deadlines here.

 "Can I get a waiver for the English language test requirement?"

English proficiency tests are only waived for applicants who:

 have completed a higher education degree instructed in English at a university or a

university of applied sciences in an EU/EEA country. The official language of the degree
programme has to be stated in the degree certificate or its supplement, or in the transcript
of records. Statements by professors or heads of department are not accepted. Other
documentation regarding language of instruction will not be accepted.
 have completed a degree instructed in English at a university that is physically located in
one of the following countries: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand. All
other applicants must take one of the accepted English language progficiency tests to be
eligible.

 "My English test score is slightly too low. Can I still enrole in one of your programs? "

 Unfortunately not. Please try to improve your score and then you are always welcome to apply to
our programmes at a later date.

 "Where should I send my TOEFL scores?"

All TOEFL tests must be sent directly to the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The institution code
you need to use is 0683 (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT). This code should be used
regardless of which university you indicate as your first year preference. When you visit the ETS
website, select KIT and then choose the ‘any department not listed’ option. From there, you can
manually type the name of the programme you are applying to (e.g. EMINE, SELECT, Energy for
Smart Cities).

 "I sat an IELTS test. Should I send a certified copy of the results?"

For IELTS, a minimum overall mark of 6.5 is required and no section should be below 5.5 (only
IELTS Academic exams accepted). IELTS exams are verified online by the admissions office, so
sending a photocopy of your test results together with your application documents is sufficient.

 I have a five year old TOEFL result. Can I use it for the application?

Results of IELTS and TOEFL are valid from two years of the date of the exam. The same holds for
CPE/CAE certificates. If you can show proof that you have maintained your English proficiency since
then, we will consider this on a case by case basis.

 "What scholarship opportunities do you have in your programmes?"

There are scholarship opportunities for the top rated applicants who are accepted on to the
programmes, however the process is very competitive and each candidate is evaluated based on a
number of criteria. You can read more here.

 "I have found a very nice energy related programme somewhere else. Can I still
qualify for one of the KIC InnoEnergy scholarships?"

 No. The KIC InnoEnergy scholarships are only awarded to students in one of the KIC InnoEnergy
MSc programmes.

 "How do I apply for a scholarship?"

In the online application form for the MSc programmes, you can also indicate if you are applying
for a scholarship. There is no special application procedure for the scholarships. All applicants are
evaluated for eligibility and for other merits. Those with the highest qualifications are accepted and
of these students, only the highest ranked may be nominated for a scholarship.

 "My background is in XYZ and my GPA is XYZ. Do I qualify for a scholarship?"

Both admission to our programmes, as well as nomination for scholarships follows a thorough
evaluation and ranking of all applicants and is thus impossible to predict. The best way to confirm
your eligibility is to apply. If you are accepted (a competitive process in itself) but NOT nominated
for a scholarship, perhaps you can look for alternative sources for funding (there are other
scholarship opportunities available).

 "Do I need to apply for a tuition fee waiver?"

As a non-EU applicant it depends on whether or not you are awarded a scholarship. If you are an
EU-applicant you will receive the tuition fee waiver IF you are accepted.

 "When am I considered an EU or non-EU applicant?"

‘EU applicants’ have citizenship in one of the EEA countries (all EU member states and Norway,
Liechtenstein and Iceland) or Switzerland. ‘Non-EU applicants’ are all other applicants.
