The Killer Evening

By: Moe, Trevor, Gavin

Summary of the Case (Moe)

Carelton Comet, a mysterious person was recently released from jail. To

celebrate, he decided to have a get together with friends. He led 5 of his friends
to a picnic. After they ate, the sky darkened and Carelton Comet was found
dead with a steak knife in his back. Our mission was to find out who killed
Carelton, which we did by doing forensic tests such as blood typing,
karyotyping, and ink chromatography.
After compiling and inspecting all the evidence,
we believe that Nancy Normal killed Carelton
Comet
Fingerprint Results (Moe)

For this part of the case, we dusted for fingerprints on a slide with a fingerprint
on it. The fingerprint was supposedly found on the table near where Carelton
Comet was sitting. After revealing the fingerprint we compared it to the
suspects fingerprints that we had. Our group determined that the fingerprint
matched Theresa Terra. Though, we do not believe that she is the murderer.
She could have merely been sitting by Carelton, the steak knife could have been
hers, or she could have accidently touched the table at anytime.
Ink Chromatography (Gavin)

We separated the coloured pigments from pens of the suspects, and we

matched one of the pigments to the ink found on the note at the crime scene.
Pigments separate according to polarity or ability to dissolve in the solvent
(isopropyl alcohol). The ink on the note found at the crime scene mached the
ink from Nancy Normal and Sam Sophomore’s pen. We believe that Ncany
Normal was the one who wrote the note with that pen, since Nancy has more
evidence and more motive than Sam Sophomore does.
Blood Type Results (Trevor)
For this experiment, we tested all of the suspects blood to see what type it is and compare it to the
blood types found at the crime scene. There are two type of antigens we used to test for blood type,
which are antigen A and antigen B. These antigens cause the immune system to make antibodies
against the protein causing the blood to clump. If the blood clumps with antigen A, it is A blood, if it
clumps with antigen B it is B type blood, if it clumps with both it is AB type blood, and if it clumps with
none it is type O blood. Using this process we found out that Crime Scene #1 contained O blood,
Crime Scene #2 had A blood. Glen Glee, Theresa Terra, and Nancy Normal all have A blood and Sam
Sophomore, Carelton Comet, and Fred Flimmer all have O blood. The blood from Crime Scene #1 could
be Carelton Comet’s own blood (since he had O type blood), which leads us to believe that the true
killers blood is in Crime Scene #2 (which had A blood). Nancy Normal has A blood which means that
she could be the killer.
Pedigree Results (Trevor)

We made genealogical charts of each of the suspects in order to find out which
diseases they and their family have, as well as blood type and family relations.
These are called pedigrees. In order to do this, we learned about each suspect’s
families (including ways they died, diseases, etc.) and used our knowledge of
pedigrees which helped us to make our own. From these pedigrees, we learned
that Nancy Normal has Huntington’s disease, a disease which can cause
moodiness, anxiety, and behavioral disturbances. Our group believes that her
having this behavior-altering disease contributed to Nancy murdering Carelton.
Karyotype Results (Gavin)

Chromosomes were found at both crime scenes. We put the chromosomes in

order and compared it to the chromosomes of the suspects. Crime Scene #1
matched Carelton Comet and Sam Sophomore. Though, this could just be the
blood of Carelton since he was stabbed. Nancy Normal’s DNA was found at the
second crime scene. As well as that, Nancy Normal has 3 X chromosomes
which means she has Triple X Syndrome. Triple X Syndrome can cause
behavioral and emotional difficulties, which could have contributed to her
murdering Carelton.
DNA Fingerprinting Results (Gavin)

We first compared the DNA sequence of the suspects to the DNA found at the crime scenes,
We found out that Carelton Comet, Glen Glee and Sam Sophomore match crime scene #1 and
Theresa Terra, Nancy Normal and Fred Flimmer match crime scene #2. We believe (like the rest
of the tests involving crime scene #1) that the DNA could belong to Carelton Comet since he
probably bled a lot, causing his DNA to get everywhere. Next we found their DNA fingerprint by
doing a PCR reaction and gel electrophoresis. In a PCR reaction a specific region of DNA is
copied. We integrated dideoxynucleotides which are labelled with a fluorescent molecule that
can be seen as color. It also blocks the extension of the DNA copies. We compared the colors
of the suspect’s DNA, to the colors of the DNA from the crime scene. Fred Flimmer, Sam
Sophomore, and Carelton Comet matched crime scene #1 and Nancy Normal matched crime
scene #2. Again, our group believes that the DNA could come from Carelton Comet since his
DNA got everywhere due to his bleeding.Next slide shows results of the electrophoresis.

What is the Motive? (Trevor)

Nancy Normal likes Fred Flimmer, who is currently engaged to Theresa Terra.
We believe that Carelton Comet’s true identity must be Thomas Sandstone
since according to him, he has “many children by many different women.”
What is the Motive?

Fred Flimmer’s father was Thomas Sandstone, who killed both Fred’s aunt and sister.
According to the family histories, “Embarrassed by his father’s actions, Fred changed his
last name to Flimmer.” Nancy Normal is trying to win Fred’s heart by killing the man that
made him so embarrassed and saddened. As well as that, Thomas had a affair with
Nancy’s aunt and they had a child that was later kidnapped and killed. Nancy’s aunt
became depressed and institutionalized (and probably won’t be released). If that affair
didn’t happened, Nancy’s aunt would never have been institutionalized. Nancy could have
murdered Carleton to get revenge for her aunt as well. Her Huntington’s disease and also
her having Triple X Syndrome could have caused her to have a behavioral disturbance
and overreact. She also could have been lying about the cut on her hand (alibi). She could
have accidently cut it on the steak knife (that she used to kill Carelton with).
