Design Load on Piles -7.5 Tons

Testing Load on Piles – 18.75 Tons (2.5 times the design load)
Pile marks: - TP-2 & TP-4
Pile lengths: - 25mtrs each
6.1. Lateral load test
 The test is carried out by introducing a hydraulic jack (50 Tons) of adequate capacity with
pressure gauge abutting the pile horizontally and reacting against a suitable system. Refer fig.
 It shall be ensured that the pile concrete had the strength equal to the 28 days cube strength
required for particular grade concrete.
 The pile head will be chipped off up-to 300mm above cut-off level.
 The test to be conducted at cut off level.
 The test area within a radius of (6m) from the test pile shall be excavated for carrying out the
test.
 Bearing plate shall be used of adequate thickness to prevent bending under the applied load.
 Loading should be applied in increments of about 20 percent of the estimated safe load. The
next increment should be applied after the rate of displacement is nearer to 0.1mm.
 Place one hydraulic jack and fill the gap between reaction pile and hydraulic jack with
structural strut. The contract point of strut will be hold on reaction pile and other side with
hydraulic jack, ram of jack shall be made in contract with pile profile at pile-side
 Connect hydraulic jack to hydraulic pump with dully-calibrated pressure gauge
 Place the two supports of the datum bar of length 6.0m over firm ground and fix 2 .dial
Gauges of 0.01mm sensitivity spaced apart and kept horizontal one with strut of Test pile
(Refer attached drawing).
 Displacement shall be read by using dial gauges of 0.01mm sensitivity spaced apart. (Make :-
Mitutoyo Model :- Kains)
 The safe lateral load on the pile shall be taken as the least of the following:
a) Fifty percent of the final load at which the total displacement increases to 12mm.
b) Final load at which the total displacement corresponds to 5mm.
c) Load corresponding to any other specified displacement as per performance requirements.
 Before and after the application of each stage of loading and unloading, readings shall be
taken at two opposite sides of pile cap by means of the dial gauges. (Refer below for loading
sequence).
 Tarpaulin covering will be done to protect the jacks and dial gauges from rain.
 Where the rate of settlement does not show any movement in test pile readings, the reading
shall be taken at a reasonable interval or when next stage of loading or unloading is
performed.

 Following each application of an increment of load the load shall be held for not less than the
period shown in the above table. For any period when the load is constant, time and settlement
shall be recorded immediately on reaching the load and prior to the next step of load.
