TECHNICAL BREEDING ANALYSIS 2017

WHAT PROGRESS HAS CRV ACHIEVED

IN THE CRV BREEDING PROGRAMME?
This technical analysis and benchmarking shows the results of genetic progress booked
by CRV in the Dutch/ Flemish Holstein breeding programme. The trends apparent in these
bulls precede the results farmers will see reflected in their cows by several years. This
analysis therefore offers a preview of the future of our customers’ herds.
CRV is making progress across the board with its portfolio of bulls: efficiency,
health, production, longevity and fertility. The influence of genomics has even
doubled the annual progression rate. NVI: NVI is the total merit in-

production, longevity and feed intake play a particularly important role,
but the breeding values for persistency, maturity rate, calving interval and age at
first calving are also taken into account. The higher the percentage, the more
efficient the daughters of a bull convert feed into milk.

Better Life Health indicates the percentage of healthy animals compared with
the population average. The advantage of using bulls that score high for Better
Life Health is that the herd is easier to manage, the cows reach a higher aver-
age age and they require less treatment. This breeding figure takes into account all the
relevant factors for cow health: udder health, hoof health, ketosis, daughter fertility,
maternal calving ease, sire calving ease and vitality.

CRV BREEDING PROGRAMME
IN A NUTSHELL
The focus of CRV’s breeding programme is efficient lifetime pro-
duction and a healthy herd. One of the factors that contributes to
this goal is CRV’s broad portfolio of bulls. The range of bulls is the
result of a dedicated breeding programme.

How does selection work in the CRV breeding programme? This

infographic sheds some light on the process.

CRV breeding bulls

BETTER COWS | BETTER LIFE

SUMMARY
HUGE PROGRESS IN
BETTER LIFE INDEXES
Cows are becoming more efficient because they produce more milk, (can) live longer and maintain a constant
weight. The feed intake (kg. dm/day) does increase, but only to the extent of supporting additional milk pro-
duction. The feed costs per kg of milk therefore decrease.

Alongside enhanced efficiency, the health and fertility of the cows is boosted and they have the genetic
potential to live longer. This gives increased ease and better welfare for the cow and the farmer. In illustration,
the black-and-white bulls used in 2005-2006 rated an average of +1.3 for Efficiency and -1.5 for Health as a
Better Life (BL) score. The black-and-white bulls being reared in the current programme rate +11 BL Efficiency
and +8 BL Health, while red-and-white bulls score +10 and +7 respectively.

Inbreeding under control

CRV takes various initiatives to monitor and control inbreeding in the breeding programme and to ensure a
sufficiently wide genetic variation in the animals. For example, the bloodline of each bull is examined to see
which cows make the best match in the mating advice programme.
The kinship coefficient is also considered. The kinship coefficient of a certain bull to be used for breeding
purposes is compared with the rest of the bull population already used by CRV. In the black-and-white popu-
lation, the average kinship coefficient is decreasing as the influence of O Man genes declines. With red-and-
white bulls, the kinship coefficient is lower than among black-and-white, but the influence of O Man is get-
ting greater. Bulls that are less closely related to the Dutch/Flemish cows and to the other population in the
breeding programme therefore have preference in the selection process.

Benchmark, comparison with the range offered by competitors in the Netherlands and Flanders
As well as technical analysis of our own bulls, the results were also benchmarked against the technical bree-
ding results of bulls offered by other companies serving the Dutch and Flemish markets.
There are numerous American bulls with high (converted equivalent) NVI-scores, but if these bulls are filtered
on reliability (> 75%), protein % (> -0.15) and feet and legs (> 101) CRV accounts for 39% of the highest NVI sco-
ring bulls in the world. If the filter is set to bulls with daughters in the Netherlands/Flanders, 64% of the highest
ranking NVI bulls are from CRV. This percentage is even higher with red-and-white cattle.

Even more interesting is the fact that the average breeding values of the sires of all the calves born in the
last years indicate the level at which farmers will have heifers producing milk. CRV customers clearly have an
advantage over customers of other providers. Our bulls score better than … for the traits …

These average breeding values indicate the average performance level of heifers when a certain breeding
organisation is used. It is clear that CRV customers will have heifers that perform better once they start producing
milk. The mutual differences among the various organisations vary depending on the party concerned.

DETAILED ANALYSIS
BETTER LIFE
The progression booked by CRV bulls for Better Life Health and Better
Life Efficiency is exceptional. Although these two breeding figures were
only introduced in the 2012-2013 financial year, the scores are known
for bulls used before that date.

Red-and-white and black-and-white bulls showed a stable, rising trend

for many years. In 2005-2006 black-and-white CRV bulls used still
rated an average Better Life score of +1.3 for efficiency. Today’s bulls
score an average of +10. For BL Health, the average score then was
below zero (-1.6), while this score now averages at just below +6.

An identical trend is apparent with red-and-white; Better Life Efficiency

increased from -3.3 to +8.5, Better Life Health from -1.5 to +5.2.

DETAILED ANALYSIS
HEALTH
Herds are getting healthier. This is demonstrated by the progression
made in the Better Life Health breeding figure. Similar progress
is also apparent in a number of underlying breeding values. In
this context, the most impressive gains have been made in udder
health – 1.0 points per year with black-and-white and 0.6 points with
red-and-white, followed by ketosis and hoof health (0.6 points a year
with black-and-white and 0.4 points a year with red-and-white).

A slightly rising trend is also noticeable for fertility. The latter

is maybe the most exceptional aspect in view of the negative
correlation with production. Strong progress has been booked for
production, but additionally, fertility has been boosted.

DETAILED ANALYSIS

(FEED) EFFICIENCY
It is important to know that these traits for (feed) efficiency are
expressed as genetic standard units. The various breeding values
are all categorised differently.

Production, expressed here as the Inet breeding value, and feed

intake, both increased sharply for black-and-white and red-and-
white groups. The disposition for weight has not increased over
the past six to seven years, so there is not more maintenance feed
required. On the other hand, production has risen massively, which
means the animals must consume more feed. But efficiency is
sharply increasing in a general sense.

DETAILED ANALYSIS
NVI
In the 2008-2009 financial year, CRV introduced genomic
selection into its breeding programme. This radically altered the
selection method applied to bulls.

Until that moment, progress made with black-and-white amounted

to an average of 14 NVI points per year. However, following the
introduction of genomic selection in the CRV breeding programme,
this figure jumped to up to 33 NVI points higher per year.

The annual progress of red-and-white bulls rose from 12 to 30

points NVI.

DETAILED ANALYSIS
PRODUCTION
The fat and protein percentage has shown a relatively stable pattern
for years. A rise has been observed in black-and-white in recent
years. There is also a rising line in the trends in kgs of milk for both
red-and-white and black-and-white. More than 1000 kg of milk can
be added to the figures for both groups. This additional production
resulted in more than 30 kg of protein also being noted.

ANALYSE IN DETAIL
LONGEVITY
Advances made in longevity have been particularly strong
since genomic selection was introduced into the CRV breeding
programme. 500 days have been added to the figures for both
black-and-white and red-and-white bulls - that is more than 50 days
per year.

The average age of Dutch herds is currently 5.7 years. Daughters

of a bull with a breeding value for longevity of 0 therefore reach an
average age of 5.7 years. Daughters of bulls with a breeding value
of 200 reach 6.0 years, 400 days results in an age of 6.3 years and
finally, a breeding value of 600 days for longevity gives an average
age of 6.6 years.

DETAILED ANALYSIS
CONFORMATION
The most significant rising trend in the CRV breeding programme is
accounted for by udders and legs. The stature of black-and-white
daughters (of bulls from the CRV breeding programme) remained
relatively stable.

Over the space of ten years, the stature of black-and-white incre-

ased by just 0.8 cm and red-and-white by 1.1 cm.

DETAILED ANALYSIS
KINSHIP
In its own breeding programme, CRV examines the kinship
coefficient of every bull compared with all the bulls used in its
breeding programme. This ensures the necessary variation in the
bloodlines, as kinship is a measure of the variety of the gene pool in
the pedigrees.

Kinship among black-and-white has been stable in the past years,

but has fallen slightly recently. This figure is lower among red-and-
white, but has a stable to slightly rising line.

The influence of O Man on kinship is gradually declining in black-

and-white populations. Etazon Renate and Snowman still have a
quite strong influence. The influence of more recent bull sires such
as Bookem and Planet is still relatively low. With red-and-white, the
influence of Stadel and Lightning is declining, however O Man’s
influence is rising while that of Goldwyn is falling marginally.
