Lesson: Simple Present vs Present Continuous
Text: The Lazy Bear
Type of lesson: Lessons of systematization and revision of knowledge
Time: 45 minutes
Learning aims: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
A1 - learn the new words from the text “The Lazy Bear”;
A2 - read correctly and fluently the text;
A3 - prove comprehension answering some questions;
A4 - revise the use of Present Tense Simple and Continuous;
A5 - practise the revised tenses through exercises;
A6 - practise English having fun.

Language functions: identifying actions and situations; asking and answering questions;

Skills involved: reading, speaking, writing, listening

Teaching aids: laptop, video-projector, worksheets, blackboard


Interaction: teacher – student, student – teacher, teacher –students, student – student
Teaching techniques: conversation, explanation, exercise, educational games

Assessment activity: The students will be assessed on class participation.
Assumption:
 the Ss know the four seasons, names of the animals and children’s winter activities;
 a few students are able to differentiate between the two aspects of the present tense –
Present Simple and Present Continuous;
 few students can read in English trying to understand the messages of the sentences;

Anticipated problems:
 Some students may not be familiar with certain words;
 Some students may not remember previous information about the grammar issues;
 Some students may be shy to speak English. The teacher will encourage them to speak
English (and to have fun, miming). If they remain silent, they are less likely to learn. The
T will explain to them that it is better for them to risk getting something wrong, than not
to say anything. All learners need to experiment and make errors.

WARM-UP / generating interest
Procedure:
 T greets the Ss, checks if someone is missing.
 T shows some pictures illustrating four poems known by the Ss. The Ss recite/read the
poems identifying the missing words.

Snowflakes are falling Welcome, winter! How are you?


One by one We are happy to see you!
Children are playing Daddy says the time is right
Happy all the time. For a little snowball fight.

Little snowball, fly Snowman, snowman,


Gently in the sky Come and play
Be a lovely toy On this snowy winter day.
And a winter joy.

LEAD – IN
Aim: to get pupils involved into the topic
Procedure:
 T writes on the blackboard the title of the lesson (Simple Present vs Continuous Present
Tense).
 T tells the Ss that they will revise the Present Tense using a text called “The Lazy Bear”.

PRESENTATION
PRE-READING
Aim: to learn the new words from the text (lazy, asleep, awake; to snore)
Procedure:
 T pre-teaches key vocabulary using PPT images (forest, bear, spring, summer, autumn,
leaves, winter, lazy, sleepy, awake, asleep).
 The Ss write the words in their notebooks.

READING AND UNDERSTANDING
Aim: - to read correctly and fluently the text
- to prove comprehension answering some questions

Procedure:
 The Ss read the text. (Worksheet 1)
 T asks students a few questions related to the text:
Where does the action take place in The Lazy Bear? (in the forest)
When does the action take place? (in spring, in summer, in autumn, in winter)
Who is the main character? (Bruno, the lazy bear)
How is Bruno? Why is Bruno so lazy? (Bruno is very sleepy. Bruno sleeps in all four seasons of
the year)

SPEAKING AND WRITING
Aim: to revise the use of Present Tense Simple and Continuous

Procedure:
 The Ss notice that in the text “The Lazy Bear” there are verbs at Present Tense Simple
and Continuous. They revise the difference between these two aspects of the verb
(Present Simple Tense shows a repeated, habitual action/ Present Simple Continuous
expresses the idea that the action is happening at the moment of speaking, now).
 T generates a discussion moment in order to highlight the Present Simple:

Indeed, the lazy bear in the story sleeps a lot!


What time do you usually go to bed?
Do you have any special teddy bears or toys that you like to sleep with?
What time do you wake up in the morning?
Do you like getting up in the morning or are you usually still sleepy?

 T generates a discussion moment in order to highlight the Present Simple Continuous:

Why, at the end of the story, are the animals very happy? (Reading from the text: They are
having a party.)
What are we doing now? What are you reading now? What are you learning at the moment?

 T writes on the blackboard the form, the use and the specific adverbs of the two tenses.
 The Ss solve an exercise (Worksheet 2)

COMMUNICATION PRACTICE ACTIVITY
READING, SPEAKING AND WRITING
Aim: to practise the revised tenses through exercises

Procedure:
 T gives the Ss worksheet 3 or 4 (depending on the student's ability to use English)
 The Ss have to unscramble the sentences and then ask their partners the questions or just
to circle the correct answer.

PRODUCTION and WRAP-UP ACTIVITY
LISTENING, READING, WRITING
Aim: to practise English having fun

Procedure:
 T gives the Ss worksheets with the lyrics of a song with missing words – In the Snow.
(Worksheet 5)
 The Ss listen to the song and complete the lyrics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

 The T checks the task and gives guidance for a correct solving of the exercise.
 The T appreciates the active pupils and gives advice to the less active ones.

THE LAZY BEAR

It’ s spring in the forest. The grass and the leaves are growing and the animals are
waking up.

Bruno, the bear, is still asleep. He doesn’t know that it’s spring. “Listen! Bruno is
snoring!”

Now it’s summer. It’s warm and the animals are having lots of fun. Bruno likes to
play and swim with his friends. But where is he?

Bruno is still sleeping. He doesn’t know that it’s summer. Sometimes he sleeps too
much.

Now it’s autumn. The leaves are turning red, yellow and orange. The animals are
getting ready for winter. But where is Bruno? His friends are so worried!

Bruno is still asleep. He doesn’t know that it’s autumn.

Now it’s winter. You can’t see the animals. They’re all asleep in their warm
homes. But where’s Bruno?
“What a nice, long sleep. Snow! It’s winter! I’m all alone.”

It’s spring again. The animals are very happy. They are having a party. But where
is Bruno?

“Bruno!” Bruno is awake at last! Now he knows that it’s spring.
