1 Hull
1.1 Outside of hull   
-1. Appearance test of a shell and a deck is done to check whether
there is or not corrosion, damage or too much deformation
-2. For wooden ships over 10 years after construction, bottom
sheathing is removed for big area for inspection.

(1) Closing appliances of exposed hatch and walls around an engine
room
(2) Closing appliances of a ventilator

(4) Freezing port of a bulwark
(5) Side scuttles

1.2 Inside of hull   


-1. Appearance test is done to inside of hull and a tank regarding
corrosion, damage and too much deformation.
-2. For internal inspection of a cargo area, engine area and
accommodation area and internal inspection of a tank,
following points are noted according to age of the ship for
inspections.
(1) Ships within 10 years after construction
(a) Cargo area
(i) For steel ships, at least one bottom ceiling at both sides
of hull centerline is removed for inspection
(ii) For wooden ships, one ceiling between internal keel and
the lowest deck is removed for inspection.
(b) Engine room.

flooring if necessary.

(3) Ships which passed 34 years or more after construction


Considering condition of a ship and process of past
inspections according to each ship, and decision is made.
-3. For ships of 200 m in length or more, internal inspection is done
to a fore and after peak representative permanent ballast tank.
(Note: It is included in –2. For regular inspection).
-4. For tanker which were constructed 10 years ago or earlier (It
means ships which are used as bulk freighters of inflammable
liquid), optional 2 cargo tanks are inspected internally. (Note: It
is included in -2. For regulation inspections).
-5. Appearance test is done to watertight door and various through
parts on watertight bulkhead.
1.3 Thickness measurement of platings for steel ships  
-1. For principal construction members which are recognized that
progress of wear and tear is noticeable in the inspection of
inside and outside of a hull, thickness of platings is measured
and should be recorded.
-2. At the time of first regular inspection when 10 years has past
after construction
Thickness of shell plating, deck and top plating of double
bottom are measured a section between 0.4L at midship part of
a hull, and they must be recorded.
-3. At the time of regular inspection before 22 years after
construction which comes after the above –2 regular inspection
When it is recognized that progress of wear and tear is
noticeable based on the record of above –2 or the same was
noticed through inspection of inside and outside of a hull,
measurement and record which are the same as above –2 are
done.
-4. At the time of first regular inspection after 22 years has past
after construction
Thickness of shell plating, deck and top plating of double
bottom are measured at optional 2 sections between 0.4L at
midship part of a hull, and they should be record.

-5. At the time of regular inspection which is before 34 years after


the construction next to the above –4 inspection.
When it is recognized that progress of wear and tear is
noticeable based on the above 04 record or the same is
recognized through inspections of inside and outside of a hull,
measurement and record as –4 are done.
-6. Ships which are constructed 34 years ago or earlier

1.4 Rudder  
While a rudder is pulled or removed, corrosion or damage,
looseness of coupling bolts and gap in bearing are inspected.
However, if the actual condition is found good based on the
result of measurement for gaps of bearings, pull or removal of a
rudder might be omitted. (For it is applied only to ones with
measures for the check of corrosion in rudder head material)
1.5 Pressure test   
-1. At the time of the first inspection 10 years after the construction
and following inspection which are done in every 12 years,
pressure test is done according to next table. Pressure test, in
principle, should be water pressure test or water injection test.

1.6 Efficiency test   


-1. Open/close test is done to check valves and check cock for
watertight bulkheads
-2. Open/close test for watertight doors
-3. Open/close test for valves of drainage pipes and shut-off device
of an opening on a ship side
-4. Open/close test for Class 1 shut-off device of break bulkhead
and side windows
-5. Open/close test for skylight of an engine room and watertight
hatch covers
-6. Operation test for a signal and switch indicator of watertight
doors

2 Engine
2.1 General rules   
-1. In inspection of an engine at regular inspection after the second,
appearance test is done to a pump room, various pipings,
automatic breathing valves and nets for fire prevention for an
engine room, a boiler room, refrigerating apparatus and exposed
part of primary cooling system for its piping.

-2. In inspection of an engine in Class 1 intermediate inspection,


appearance test is done to a pump room, various pipings,
automatic breathing valves and nets for fire prevention for an
engine room, a boiler room, refrigerating apparatus and exposed
part of primary cooling system for its piping.

3 Electric Installation
3.1 Starting test of a generator for emergency power source  
3.2 Generators (including ones for emergency power source)
-1. Running test of overspeed prevention system and other safety
systems
-2. Parallel operation test
-3. Load test
3.3 Switchboards (including section boards and distribution boards)  
-1. Inspection of actual condition
-2. Running test with actual load to load switches and breakers,
manual open/close test for the same and confirmation of the set

3.5 Running test of a motor and other electric installations   


3.6 Generating system for engine space unmanned ship   
-1. Running test of overload prevention system and alarm system
-2. Automatic feeding test of a standby generator and automatic
restart test of Class 1 auxiliary engine

-1. Switch test of working power source and auxiliary power source

4 General Equipment  
4.1 Accommodation, sanitary and escape equipments
-1. Actual condition is inspected to the whole equipment, and
especially to the following items
(1) Bulwark, lanyard, side ladder, safety passage equipment and protection
equipment for deck opening
(2) Notice board of explanation for emergency
-2. Lighting test of emergency indication light and emergency
lighting system by emergency power source
4.2 Anchor, anchor chain and rope 
-1. Anchor, anchor chain and rope
(1) Inspection of actual condition and quantity
(2) Diameter is measured and wear condition is checked for an
anchor chain
(3) For ships of 10 years old or more, running test of anchor lifting
equipment is done.
(4) Switching test of remote and ship side for remote controlled ship
equipments
4.3 Steering system   
(1) Dimension of chains, rods, pulleys and bottles is measured and
wear condition is checked.
(2) For main steering system and auxiliary steering, running test is
done.
(3) Indication of steering explanation is checked.

4.4 Navigation tools   


-1. Actual condition, quantity and arrangement are checked.
-2. Efficiency test or blinking test are done to open circuit alarm for
ship light and signal light.
-3. Whistling test is done to steam whistles.
-4. Navigation radar
(1) Actual condition is inspected regarding the following items:
(a) Fitting condition of antennas
(b) Maintenance condition of electro-magnetic wave radiant
surface of antennas
(c) Abrasion condition of rotating parts
(d) Abrasion condition of a contact for range switching appliance
(e) Condition of change and adjustment due to completion of
service time of main parts (magnetron, TR tube, ATR tube
etc.)
(2) It is confirmed that influence given to magnet compass by
On/Off of power is within 0.5 degree.
(3) For ones without auto-plotters, it is confirmed that necessary
tools such as grease pen are equipped for plotting.
(4) Selecting an object, and it is confirmed thru compass direction
and distance of the object by a navigation radar is the same at
ones according to a chart.
(5) Direction of fore bright line by an indication of relative bearing is
measured.
(6) For ones with systems which are interlocked with compasses, it
is confirmed that an indication when a compass repeater for
interlocking is rotated follows smoothly.
(7) Total running test is done to confirm that the operate normally
with each distance range. And also, each equipment is checked
that it runs normally by operating each adjustors.

-5. For gyrocompass, running test of power failure alarm system is


done.
-6. Ship speed and distance gauge
For ship speed and distance gauges, following
inspection should be done. And inspections could be
done at the time of sea trial. Tests of (1) and (2) can be
done while mooring and for (1) just confirmation that
mode can be indicated is enough.
(1) It is confirmed that sea speed and ground speed can be
indicated.
(2) For ones with movable instrumentation, running test is done,
and checked that condition of instrumentation can be indicated.
(3) For magnetic compass, it is confirmed that safety distance
indicated in the ship speed and distance gauge is secured.
-7. For head turning angle speedmeter, it is confirmed that safety
distance is secured for magnetic compass.
-8. For a pilot ladder, it is confirmed that there is no damage.
-9. Running test is done to the following systems
(1) System which transmit command to where a main engine is
controlled from a bridge.
(2) Call system for engineering staff.
(3) Communication system between a steering room and a bridge.
(4) Communication system between standard magnetic compass if
it is installed and a bridge.
(5) Communication system between a radio compass if it is installed
and a bridge.
(6) Communication system between the bridge of an engine space
unmanned ship, main engine controlling space, dining room, rest
room and staff room of engineering department.
4.5 Equipment for loading and other works   
-1. Cargo lift apparatus
(1) Appearance test is done.
(2) Inspection of loading records and entry of necessary items are
done.
-2. Remote control bulk cargo loading system and remote control
ballast water filling and drainage system.
It is confirmed that a function of remote control
can be reset manually.

4.6 Special equipment   


-1. Elevators
(1) Inspection of actual condition is done, indication is confirmed
and inspection records for elevators are inspected.
4.7 Overhaul inspection of main parts or driving part of a hoisting
machine is done.
4.8 Running test with load of 1.1 time of limit load is done.
4.9 Running test of safety apparatus for protecting crew is done.
4.10 Running test of communication system is done.
4.11 For an elevator for pilots running test of emergency stop
system is done.
5 Lifesaving Appliances

5.1 Lifeboat   

-1. Appearance test of inside and outside of a boat is done to check


it is normal.
-2. Airtight test of an air tank (0.07 kg/cm2 is standard) is done.
-3. Swing out test is done with fittings loaded.

-4. Put in the water with fittings loaded. One lifeboat is operated
from inside, and it is descended and launched. Test of a brake is
done, recovery test is done.
-5. Surface test is done.
-6. Running test of release system of a hanging rope and a warp is
done.
-7. Trial operation of lifeboats with motors is done, and running of
ahead/astern and rudder is done.
-8. Running test of ventilation system is done.
-9. Electrolyte ratio of a storage battery is measured.
-10. Blink test of room lights, canopy lights and search lights is
done.
-11. Confirmation of fittings is done.
(1) Rescue food: Validity is checked.
(2) Portable fire extinguisher: Validity of fire extinguishing agent is
checked.
(3) Processed goods: Validity is checked.
(4) Watertight electric light: Blink test is done.
-12. For lifeboats which feed air by itself, following inspections are
done.
(1) Pressure of an air container is checked.
(2) Vent test of piping is done.
-13. For fireproof lifeboats, following inspections are done.
(1) Inspections as above - 12 are done.
(2) Sprinkle test is done.
5.2 Inflatable liferafts and inflatable buoyant apparatus   
-1. Inspection is done according to maintenance standard.
-2. For launching apparatus, swing out test, descending test and
lifting/stowing test are done with fittings or with corresponding
load to fittings.
-3. In case there is no change in stowage equipments and an
authorized plant of maintenance does stowage in the presence
of a responsible staff of a ship and certifies it, stowage
inspection might be omitted except for passenger ships.
5.3 Rigid liferafts and rigid buoyant apparatus   
-1. Inspection of actual condition and check of fittings are done.
-2. For launching apparatus, swing out test, descending test and
lift/stowage test are done with fittings or the same load as
fittings.

5.4 Rescue boat   


-1. For inflatable and composite rescue boats, inspection is done
according to expansion type and complex type lifeboats
maintenance standard.
-2. Appearance test is done to check it is normal.
-3. Shaking out test is done with fittings.
-4. Making it descend with fittings. One lifeboat is operated from
inside of a lifeboat, and it is descended and launched. Brake is
tested. Life/stowage test is done.
-5. Surface test is done.
-6. Running test of releasing devices for hanging lanyards and
warps is done.
-7. Running of ahead/astern and a rudder by doing trial run.
-8. Fittings are checked. Blink test is given to watertight lights.

5.5 Automatic transmitter of distress signal  
-1. Inspection is done according to maintenance standard of
distress signal automatic transmitter.
-2. Inspection of radio inspection log is done.
5.6 Efficiency test is done to two-way radio telephone system,   
communication system on ship and alarm system.
5.7 Embarkation ladder   
Inspection of actual condition is done.
5.8 Descending type embarkation system   
Inspection is done according to maintenance standard.
5.9 For the following lifesaving appliances, actual condition, quantity   
and installation method are confirmed, and special items
mentioned are checked.
-1. Lifering
-2. Lifejacket
-3. Immersion suits
-4. Heat insulating tools
-5. Line throwing appliance - Validity is checked
-6. Accident ignition light - Blink test is done to electric type, and
validity is checked for processed goods.
-7. Auto - smoke signal - Validity is checked.
-8. Lifejacket light
-9. Parachute signal – Validity is checked.
-10. Fire line - Same as above.
5.10 Installation of a manual regarding maintenance, spare parts 
and tools is checked.

6 Fire Fighting Appliances


6.1 Water injection fire extinguishing appliance.   
-1. Water injection test is done from a hydrant which is at the
highest place of a ship or the farthest place.
-2. For one fire pump of engine space unmanned ship, it is
confirmed that it can be started at a bridge and fire controlling
area.
6.2 Fixed type fire-smothering gas extinguishing appliance   
-1. Replenishment weight and replenishment pressure for haron fire
extinguishing appliance are checked.
-2. Vent test is done to piping.
-3. Running test is done to audible alarm system.
6.3 Fixed type foam extinguishing appliance, fixed type high   
expansion foam extinguishing appliance and deck foam
apparatus
-1. Volume of foaming material and time passed after
replenishment are confirmed.
-2. Through test of water is done to conveying pipes of water. For
Class 2 intermediate inspection, only deck foam apparatus is
checked.
  
6.4 Fixed type steam extinguishing system. Release test of steam is
done.

6.5 Fixed pressure water-spraying fire – extinguishing system   
-1. Running test and spray test of a feed water pump are done to
check efficiency.
-2. Giving pressure which is double of working pressure to where
get pressure such as pressure tank and other, and it is
conformed that there is no leakage.
6.6 Automatic sprinkler system   
-1. Running test is done. It is done while devices such as test
valves to test automatic system is run.
-2. Before the test of -3, it is confirmed that a valve is open. In this
case, when a report says this check is done, it is to be confirmed
by sampling test.
-3. Giving pressure of 14 kg/cm2 or more to where get pressure
such as a pressure tank for over 2 hours, pressure test is done.

6.7 Fire detecting system   


-1. Selecting any detector according to each detecting area,
running test is done.
-2. Running test of alarm system under concurrent fire condition in
more than 2 detection areas is done.
-3. Running test of alarm system under breakdown condition of
power or electric wiring is done.
6.8 Manual fire alarm system   
-1. Alarm running test is done.
-2. Visible and audible alarm is tested when power source is out of
order.
6.9 Alarm system to call crew 
Operation test is done.
6.10 Other fire extinguishing and detecting systems   
Equipped numbers and method of installation are
checked, taking care of the following points:
-1. For fire extinguishers and portable foam fire extinguishers, time
of replenishment of extinguishing agent is checked. For CO 2
extinguihers, volume of a gas is measured.
-2. Passed period after production is checked for spare
extinguishing agent.
-3. For auto-storage breathing appliance, volume of a gas is
measured.
7 Fireproof Construction
7.1 General  
-1. Inspection of actual condition is done to overall fireproof
construction.
-2. Ventilation system in engine space.
Running test is done.
-3. Flame arrester
(1) Appearance test is done to check there is no corrosion or other
troubles.
(2) Installation method is checked.

-4. High-speed exhaust system


(1) Appearance test is done to check there is no corrosion or other
troubles.
(2) It is confirmed that they become open condition with set
pressure, in proportion of 1 for 5 and fractions of high-speed
exhaust systems of the same type.
(3) Running test is done to check that lift of valves is right by check
lever and so on.
-5. Material of trashes is checked.
-6. Fire control plan is checked.
-7. Running test is done to shut-systems of openings in engine
cargo spaces.
7.2 Passenger ships with car space of which navigation area is 
coasting area of smooth water area
In addition to item 2.12.1, running test is done to
the following equipments.

8 Other arrangements
Leakage test is done to joints of installation pipes for thigh   
pressure gas such as propane gas used for fuel of heating and
cooking.
9 Load Water Line

Indications and conditions which are prerequisite for that are inspected.

10 Sea Trial

For ships which are special in cruising such as


passenger ships and jet propulsion ships, sea trial is
done at the following time to confirm that running of an
engine, condition of steering and astern, operation of
side thruster and fin stabilizer are proper.
10.1 For passenger ships, at regular inspections. 
10.2 For ships which do special way of cruising such as jet 
propulsion ships, at the time of regular inspections (except
passenger ships)
