Magic Charts is a standalone proprietary chart package that is used in conjunction with the Lightspeed trading
platform . Because of networking restrictions, these charts are only available to trainees on SMB Capital's
trading floor or individuals with live trading accounts through SMB Capital or Lightspeed.
Launching Charts
There is an icon on the desktop that can be double-clicked or a hot key assigned to launch the program.
The navigation bar is located at the top of the Chart, which allows the user to use the mouse to display the drop
down menus to perform various functions. It also allows administrative functions (new chart, save, upgrade and
exit), changes to the display, changes to the date, changes to the time interval and the ability to add indicators.
Symbols
By typing directly on the chart or typing into the 1st white box below the navigation bar you can change the
symbol in the chart window. Once a symbol is typed into the chart it will be added to the listing on the left hand
side for an easy recall.
Charts also allows for symbol v. symbol index comparison. To use the comparison type a symbol into the 1st
white box and then another symbol( or index) into the 2nd box and hit enter.
Typing both symbols directly into the chart with a space between the two can also do symbol comparisons. (Ex.
INTC DELL then press enter)
Changing symbol color – To the left of the symbol there are 2 colored boxes – the top indicates upward
movement while the bottom downward movement. Click on each box to display a color palette. Click and drag
the little white box to change the colors.
Chart Style:
There are 4 styles used in Charts: Ticks, Line, Bar and candlestick. To choose or change a style the user can
either click on he DISPLAY on the navigation bar or type in the chart.(Ex. For ticks, type TICKS, for a line chart,
type LINE, for a bar chart, type BAR, for candlesticks type CANDLES.
Bar Duration
The bar duration can range from Ticks to 1month. To change a time interval either click on Time on the
Navigation bar to display a drop down menu or type in the chart. Please note when using the navigation bar
there are limited time interval choices but typing in the chart allows for unlimited interval choices. Below are
examples:
Time Horizon
The time horizon can range from intraday to years. To change a time horizon the user can either click on Today
on the navigation bar to display a drop down menu or type in the chart. Please not when using the navigation
bar there are limited time interval choices but typing in the chart allows for unlimited type horizon choices.
Ex.
Control Y – sets the chart to 1 year ( brings in data from start of calendat year to date)
Control Up Arrow- will add additional days, months, years to the chart
Control Down Arrow- will remove additional days, months, years from the chart
Click DATE on the navigation bar and a calendar will appear. This allows the option to choose a specific day,
multiple days, week or month during a given year.
Ex.
Multiple days- click on the beginning date, hold the shift key down and click on the end date
Adding Volume to the Chart
To add volume to the existing chart either type VOLUME or click on Indicators and choose Volume from the list.
Adding an Indicator
Click on Indicators on the Navigation Bar and drop down menu will appear. Choose the Indicator and it will
appear under the symbol chart. Some indicators allow for customization (Ex. Time length bands, time length of
averages etc.)
To customize click on Indicator title once it has been placed into the chart and a menu of options will appear. To
remove an Indicator, click on the title and at the bottom of the menu there will be a choice of Remove Indicator.
Horizontal/Vertical Axis- click in the box to the right to turn them on/off
Extra Pixels- this function allows the end of the chart to be shifted to the left so it does not meet with the right
axis
Creating Another Chart
If there is more than 1 chart, each chart should be named for an easy reference:
Window Label will appear-name the chart. (Ex. Intraday, Futures, etc.)
Zooming In/Out
Clicking on a point in the chart where zooming is to begin and using the wheel on the mouse.
Left click and drag mouse at the bottom of the chart and press the spacebar
If for some reason you have no data in your chart, press Control + Home to reset the window
Along the left hand side of the chart there is a list of all symbols entered and each symbol can be clicked on for
easy reference. New groups can also be created in this area.
Right click in the symbol area and choose Add New Group
It will prompt to name the new group, name and press enter
The new group name will appear in the list area
Enter symbols into the chart and they will automatically be added to the group
Once changes have been made, the group can be locked to prevent further additions
Charts also allows for importing a symbol group/list from another source.
Use the copy function to copy the group/list. Either highlight the list to be copied and right click with the mouse
and choose copy or use
Control C. Use the paste function to paste it into the symbol area by pressing Control V.
Miscellaneous Hot Key Functionality
Control L – turns last sale information on/off (displays time and sales)
Alt S- adjusts chart for stock splits (an indicator will show at the date the stock split)
This allows the user to set Hot Keys(shortcuts) to any available key or combination. To see a list of currently
configured Hot Keys, right click in the chart and choose Shortcuts from menu.
There are 2 types of Hot Keys: Local and Global. Local hot keys work when Charts is the active program.
Global hot keys will activate the program from any other application and bring it to the forefront.
When in the menu if shortcuts click ADD (the focus will be under the “Key Combination”)
Right click in the chart and choose Shortcuts from the menu
When in the menu of shortcuts click ADD (the focus will be under the “ key combination”
In the command field type: activate, press the space bar, (chart name) and press enter
