Canada's Tallest Tree

A man named Randy liked to hunt trees. He looked for big trees and old trees. He
made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down.
He wanted people to take care of them.

Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314
feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the
tree.

But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger. Loggers wanted to cut
down Canada’s tallest tree and all the trees around it.

Randy made a path in the forest so people could see the tall tree. The tree was so
big and beautiful it would fill them with awe. More and more people wanted to save
that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada’s tallest tree
is still there.

There may still be a bigger tree out there. Maybe you will find it. But there are only
a few old forests left in Canada. Many are still at risk of being cut down.

Cuba to host resumed talks between Colombian government and ELN

Talks will resume in Cuba between the Colombian government and rebel guerrilla
group ELN following Ecuador’s surprise decision to pull out last month as
intermediary between the two conflicting parties. The resumed talks will be the fifth
cycle of negotiations and will focus on negotiating a ceasefire as well as
developing an agenda that could lead towards the creation of a framework
agreement, according to a statement released by the office of the Colombian

that “[t]his announcement reiterates the firm intention of the seat to continue
working for the development of the agenda that allows us to sign a final agreement

Meanwhile, chief negotiator for the ELN, Pablo Beltran, told Telesur
English that “[w]e hope that in the time remaining in negotiations we can arrive at a

Ecuador had been the seat of negotiations for the two parties since February 2017

The talks had been fraught with tension given frequent blockades and attacks by
the ELN on oil infrastructure, police officers and military personnel. Most recently

Last month, 5 Ecuadorean citizens were abducted by an offshoot of the FARC–the

former Marxist guerrilla group that have formed a political party following their
disarmament–referred to as Frente Oliver Sinisterra. Three of the captives were
press workers in Ecuador and were subsequently slain. Their deaths sparked a
worldwide outcry and, although the killings and abductions had nothing to do with
the ELN, the growing violence seemed to have swayed President Moreno’s
