B2B Project Proposal

Selected Industry background

Energy Sector

India is facing an acute energy scarcity which is hampering its industrial growth and
economic progress. Setting up of new power plants is inevitably dependent on import of
highly volatile fossil fuels. Thus, it is essential to tackle the energy crisis through judicious
utilization of abundant the renewable energy resources, such as biomass energy, solar
energy, wind energy and geothermal energy. India is heavily dependent on fossil fuels for its
energy needs. Most of the power generation is carried out by coal and mineral oil-based
power plants which contribute heavily to greenhouse gases emission.

The average per capita consumption of energy in India is around 500 W, which is much
lower than that of developed countries. However, this figure is expected to rise sharply due
to high economic growth and rapid industrialization. The Energy is a necessity and
sustainable renewable energy is a vital link in industrialization and development of India. A
transition from conventional energy systems to those based on renewable resources is
necessary to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy and to address environmental
concerns.

Solutions in the offing: Microgeneration, also called “micropower”, is the generation of zero
or low-carbon electrical power by individuals, small businesses and communities to meet
their own needs. Some of the most widely-used microgeneration technologies include small
wind turbines, solar power photovoltaic or biomass conversion systems that have been
promoted for decades as alternative sources of renewable energy.

Traditional “megapower” production of electricity is insufficient today because of

exponential industrial growth and high living standard.

Prima-facie renewable energy may appear a bit costlier than the conventional source of
energy, but looking at the benefit of continuous power availability and great contribution
against global warming, it is worth.
The Product : PowerStep

Our clean-tech
tech design project would use
high-tech
tech ceramics to convert the energy
generated by pedestrian and vehicular
traffic into direct current that could be
stored in batteries.

Description of PowerStep
PowerStep:

Step utilizes the phenomena of piezoelectricity where eelectricity

PowerStep lectricity is generated from an applied
stress. Instead of utilizing mechanical displacement like what is necessary with magnetic motors and
micro-turbines,
turbines, piezoelectric materials allow us to harvest vibrations thereby creating a product with
no moving parts.

The energy generated is aggregated over a number of tiles and then goes through a harvesting
circuit, which conditions the power and store
stores it in a battery as DC power.

Each tile/piece gets depressed by about 5 mm each time it gets displays and many ma other
applications. Using just that small movement, it can convert the kinetic energy used into electricity,
which is then stored in the slab. Specifically, 5 percent of the energy harvested is used to make the
slab's LED glow, making it clear to users that their energy has been captured. The rest can be used to
power pedestrian lighting, information used to harvest energy from users' footsteps on stairs;
custom branding is available.

The Product is estimated to generate 50 Watts per square feet per hour with a person walking at the
moderate speed upon it.. This equ
equals
als about 1kWh per hour from 1 square feet with about 1000
people each hour. In locations like busy airport terminals, railway platforms, malls, metro stations,
tourist places; it can generate 10
10-20kWh
20kWh per day. This is enough to power lighting, electronic
displays, or an average
rage American home for one day.

Product Benefits:

There is little to no infrastructure cost for Power Step. Unlike any other alternative
lternative energy product,
Power Step is intended for dense urban and interior environments. This is a significant product
benefit.

As long as city dwellers participate in public spaces by walking to work, taking the train (or being
active where POWER Step is in place) they have done their part in producing some of the electricity
they consume each day.

It can be described as a mat that you could just roll out onto sidewalks as a retrofit. As for
retrofitting buildings, POWER Step is something that could go over any existing flooring.
floorin If carpet
tiles are already in place and permanently tacked down, POWER Step could be placed above them.
This goes for any permanent flooring.
