Methodology
The student spectrometer can be described by Figure X. The aligning of the student spectrometer started
with the focusing of the telescope at a distant object (infinity). The collimator is partially opened before aligning both
the collimator and the telescope. After aligning these parts, the focus is adjusted until the collimator slit is in sharp
focus. The crosshair is then adjusted until it overlaps with one of the image’s edges. These two adjustments are
repeated until the collimator is both sharply focused and at the center of the crosshair.

Figure X. The Student Spectrometer

After focusing the spectrometer, the 100 lines/mm diffraction grating was placed. By adjusting the telescope,
the positon of the central diffraction line and the image line were measured using the Vernier Scale. For the
measurement of the diffraction angle, the telescope is rotated clockwise to measure the first-order green spectral line,
θCW. Afterwards, the telescope was rotated counter- clockwise to measure the first-order green spectral line, θCCW. The
300 lines/mm was then placed and the preceding steps were repeated.

At this point, the |θCW – θ0CW| and |θCCW – θ0CCW| were calculated and checked if they were equal to each other. If
their difference was greater than 30’, the entire procedure would be repeated.
