Las causas son varias, pero sobre todo, el mayor problema que tenemos
con estos verbos es que los aprendemos de forma mecánica y
a través de listas, sin otro contexto que una traducción como si
fuera un diccionario o una lista de vocabulario.
En el caso de work out, con pronombre funciona así work it out, pero sin
pronombre se usa como We'll work out that problem later.
Por otra parte, comentarte que uno de los rasgos más típicos de los
verbos compuestos es que son expresiones idiomáticas. Un
idiom no es otra cosa que una frase o conjunto de palabras donde
entiendes cada una de las palabras individualmente, pero el sifnificado
final de toda la expresión no tiene casi nada que ver con las palabras
originales.
Fíjate por ejemplo, con look up, que puede ser tanto idiomático
como no idiomático.
When you get there, look up and you'll see it right in front of you
