BIG INFRASTRUCTURE
PLANS BODE WELL FOR
GULF STEEL SECTOR.

METAL MIDDLE EAST, the only

specialized event of its kind in the
Middle East, is offering an ideal
platform for companies to gain
inroads in the Middle East market.

Steel consumption across the GCC has been underpinned

by significant investment in the construction sectors of the
UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

GCC projects awarded jumps to US$1.35 trillion by end of 2013.

KSA – US$600 billion; UAE – US$350 billion, Kuwait – US$150

billion; Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain – about $250 billion

Gulf countries investing US$313 billion into various airport

development projects.

As per the latest IATA report, Gulf countries are heavily investing
into airport development to help manage a surge in passenger
traffic, which is being driven by six of the region’s major airlines.
UAE leads from the front with more than US$23 billion spent on
developing its airport infrastructure, including US$15.79 billion in
Dubai alone. Qatar is investing US$11.1 billion in developing its
new hub airport – the first phase is being opened while work on
a second phase would start. GCC states are projected to invest
more than US$300bn in some 20 energy projects expecting to
generate 8 Giga watts of additional power by 2020.

Over the next decades, as the GCC population grows by 30%

to over 50 million. Gulf countries are expected to post robust
growth over the next decade both in terms of population and GDP.
By 2020, the region’s real GDP is expected to grow by 56%.
Nominal GDP, which was US$341.6 billion in 2000, is forecast to
soar to over US$2 trillion in 2020.
Gulf steel sector poised for a major growth
Some of the GCC countries are amongst the highest consumers of iron and steel products, well above
the world level of 240 kg per person. Per capita consumption of finished steel 323 kg in Saudi Arabia,
299 kg in Iran, 385 kg in Kuwait, 1,288 kg in Qatar and 1,309 kg in UAE (World Steel Association
figures). It forecasted that the Mena countries would become one of the important world centres for
producing iron and steel in the next 5 to 10 years although currently the contribution to global produc-
tion was limited.

Steel consumption across the GCC has been underpinned by significant investment in the construction
sectors of the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The Gulf’s steel industry is expected to see a large increase
over the next decade, which will put it among the top steel produces in Asia. The demand for steel is
rising at 5% to 6% every year. It is predicted that half of the world’s steel production will be done in
arab countries by 2013 and arab countries will succeed in keeping up with worldwide development
in the steel industry.

GCC on track to become global powerhouse in manufacturing

The future of the manufacturing sector looks even more promising. The McKinsey report states the
GCC region, manufacturing now contributes on average around 10–15% of GDP, clearly demonstrating
the huge growth potential of the industry.

The manufacturing sector’s contribution to the UAE’s overall GDP, in particular, reached US$11.39
billion in 2011, growing by over 11%. It will touch US$35 billion in 2020. The same robust figures are
echoed in other GCC countries such as Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Oman. UAE also has
some big ticket investments in large-scale transport and logistics infrastructure such as the first-of-its-
kind Dubai World Central in Dubai, which provides a dedicated gateway for manufacturing companies
in the UAE to reach out to global markets.

UAE industrial units increase by 63% between 2004 and 2010 and capital investments in the industrial
sector to increase by more than US$14.2 billion by 2017.

ROBUST OIL & GAS
INDUSTRY DRIVES
TUBE & PIPE SECTOR
TO NEW HEIGHTS!

Additional US$50 billion to be

spent by GCC oil producing
countries to increase their current
oil field production capacities or
to develop new discoveries has
truly ignited the tube and pipe
industry.

New investments in the Gulf’s

pipe, tube and steel industries are
expected to exceed US$20 billion
between now and 2020.

Special focus on Tube & Pipe industry

The regional pipe industry has been riding a steep demand curve
backed by huge planned outlays on oil and gas infrastructure by
most regional governments. According to the IEA, the ME alone
will need to invest around US$18 billion in the next five years in
new pipelines and associated infrastructure ensuring high volume
to weight ratio.

Total steel pipes capacities in the GCC and North Africa stands
approximately at 1.14 mtpa as of 2008. Saudi Arabia produces
approximately 60% of the total regional capacity.

The GCC is expected to add more than 21,000 km during the

coming five years to its current pipe network, approximately
14% of the global planned pipeline network of 161,000 km. The
additional pipeline networks in the GCC is expected to deliver a
planned demand of steel pipes around 5.3 million tons during the
coming five years which is equivalent to US$7.2 billion.
Middle East countries account for about 34% of the total global
demand for pipes as demand is directly related to investment and growth in the oil and gas sector,
planned projects and government initiatives. Also the global demand supply imbalance is very
much in favor of ME pipe manufacturers.

According to the World Energy Council, KSA, Kuwait, the UAE and three other Gulf countries
need to invest up to US$100 billion over the next decade to meet the growing energy demand.
Investment in electric power projects in the GCC is expected to reach US$45.6 billion over the
next ten years, with UAE and Saudi accounting for the majority of the projects.

GLOBAL WELDING MACHINERY
MARKET TO REACH US$12.8 BILLION
BY 2015, ACCORDING TO NEW
REPORT BY GLOBAL INDUSTRY
ANALYSTS, INC.

The United Arab Emirates is

the most important hub for trade
between Europe and Asia.

Associated with this are numerous large construction projects,

investments in infrastructure, airport expansion and permanently
present work in the area of pipeline and apparatus construction.
These are diverse fields of application for joining, cutting and
surfacing technology. The steel and aluminium industries, aviation
and renewable energies also open up market opportunities for
joining technology. Until now, it was the only event of its kind in
the entire Middle East. With the ARABIA ESSEN WELDING &
CUTTING Fair, METAL MIDDLE EAST and TUBE ARABIA now
has the ideal complement thanks to the joining technology focal
points of joining, cutting and surfacing.

Good growth prospects in MENA (Middle East & North Africa)

The region is of particular interest at present since investment

activity is generally strong. The markets of the MENA region are
much smaller than the world’s biggest producer market China
in terms of absolute size, but the growth prospects for most
countries within MENA are good at present.

Benefit from oil

The region includes several of the world’s largest producers of

oil and natural gas, who have benefited from the prevailing high
oil price, so that substantial funds are available for investment in
infrastructure. As a result, in some countries of the region there
has been a boom in construction activity that has led to strong
cable demand.
