Technical Memorandum
Project: Road Map and Topography Map: Redding California

Client: Kelly Dell Prepared by Hayden Polski B. Sc

Subject: Feature Source and Map Output

Date: March 22nd, 2018 Project Number: 54796

1.0 Introduction
The assignment acts as an introduction to the usage of Raster images, styling images and the
creation of map books. The client has requested the creation of road line and topographic maps for
the city and surrounding area of Redding California. The road line map is formatted so that only
the major roads are visible when the scale is greater than 1:3000, when the scale is less than that,
both the minor roads and street names become visible. For the 3D map, the elevation above sea
level is shown using both a colour changes to denote elevation ranges, and contour lines with
divisions of 100 feet and a major contour line very 400 feet. The road line map was used in the
creation of a map book which gives a more accurate view of the roads in the project area. The
topographic map is displayed in a proper map with all the appropriate design features.
Completing the project will demonstrate that the user has attained sufficient skills in AutoCAD
through lecture, readings and in class exercises from the textbook.

2.0 Study Area

The analysis was done of Redding, California. The raster data of the area was of the central and
western half of the city of Redding. The city of Redding is located in Northern California, USA.
Figure 1 is a satellite image taken from google maps, of the study area.

3.0 Methodology
The study was done using AutoCAD Map 3D 2017. To being, a map template was created, using
the map2d.dwt template that was provided for this exercise. The coordinate system NAD27
California State Planes, Zone 1 (401) US Foot was assigned to the map. This assured that the
projection for added data would match the frame, as well as set the measurement system for all
further processes to feet.

Using the established map, the raster source REDDING_CA1.dem was connected using the
Connect to Data tool found on the Task Pane. Once the raster had been added to the map a different
pallet was applied to it, making the differences in elevation visible using colour. The pallet USGS
DEM Pallet was applied, with colour changes based on height above seal level. Figure 2 is a copy
of the legend from the final map, depicting the divisions in height and the assigned colour for each
section.

Sea level)

A vertical exaggeration of five times was applied to the map to better show the changes of elevation
in the tool. Contour Lines were added to the raster using the Create Contour Lines tool in the Task
Pane. Using the tool, the specifications for the contours lines were created, setting a contour line
ever 100 ft and every 4th contour line being a major contour. Figure 3 is a copy of the legend for
the contour lines. A hillshade was then run using the Analyze > Surface Hillshade Tool. The
direction was set to 123.357303325007 and the angle to 51.6183474272566°.

Legend

With the elevation layer fully processed, the Roads.sdf was brought in using the Connect to Data
command. Using the style editor the colour and size of the road lines was altered to black, making
it stand out well from the elevation colours. Given the high number of roads present in the original
sdf file, it was decided that only major roadways would be visible when the scale is 1:300 of
greater, with all roads being present when below this point. An additional section was created in
Roads with a filter that defined the major roads. Figure 4 is an example of the filter used to define
the major roadways.

Figure 5: Major Road Filter

With the major roads and minor roads now visible at specific scales, the next task to complete was
making the name of each road visible when below a scale of 1:3000, but while making it so the
ALLEY and UNK did not have their names visible. To do so, an additional layer was created in
the style editor. This layer had its Feature Label edited to display the Street Name (called St_Name
in the original .sdf file) and had a filter applied. Figure 5 is an image of the filter used to apply the
names to only the desired roads.

Figure 4: Road Names Filter

With the data analysis and editing complete, an map was created with all appropriate fixtures that
are needed in a standard map. The completed map can be seen in Appendix 1.
A second map was created using the 3D projection, emphasizing the topographic changes in
elevation in the study area, more so than the roadways. It can be seen in Appendix 2.
A map book was created of the entire area, set to a scale of 1500 and an overlap of 5% between
images using the provided map template of 11 x 8 classical.

4.0 Data Standards

The data is projected using the NAD27 California State Planes, Zone 1 (401) US Foot coordinate
system. For the created maps, all appropriate features (title, compass, scale, legend, metadata,
date, etc) are included. The .dwg file contains all of the relevant work, a copy of the final map
and the map book with all required information attached.

5.0 Discussion
During the process of fulfilling the assignments goals, several issues were encountered. The first
of which was during the styling for the roads.sdf. When attempting to create a filter to set which
roads are visible from the 3000 to infinity scales the format of the filter took several trys to
execute properly. Initially a filter equating the road types HYW or ART or FWY or COL to
ST_Type was used, this proved invalid. After several trials it was found that the ST_Type
needed to be equated to each of the road types separately.
As a result of solving this issue with scale, a similar method was employed when adding the
label to roads when the scale is between 0 and 3000, where a filter was applied for all of the
roads except the two types that were specified as to not be labeled.

Creating the layout for the map proved a challenge, as the legend can be challenging to work
with in some situations. The numbers used in the legend for elevation would change when
reopened and no solution for this could be found other than making the edits when the numbers
would revert. There was a degree of confusion regarding the terms of reference and the content
of the map. Initially the map contained multiple 2D views (Appendix 1) when it only needed to
show a single 3D views (Appendix 2). The issue was resolved with clarification from the course
instructor.

6.0 Conclusion
The process of creating a map book and 3D display is easily done with the use of AutoCAD 3D>
Creating the map utilized skills learned during lecture and from assigned in class exercises,
guided with the textbook and with assistance from the professor. Creating the topographic map
and editing it so that the elevation is displayed on a colour scale, as well as adding contour lines
is important for the planning of future roads and development. Close contours can indicate a
steep slope which proves unsuitable for development without significant investment. Creating
the road line map and editing the appearance based upon the current scale required the creation
of filters and multiple layers within a single feature class. Creating the map book proved
somewhat challenging, but with proper assistance and input from the professor, was completed
as per the terms of reference.
