Title
Folktales

Lesson Overview

I will explain the qualities and elements that make up a folktale. I will teach how to identify
these elements. I will have them read one folktale, write a folktale as a class, then compare and
contrast the two to each other.

Central Focus (Enduring Understandings)

Students will learn what a folktale is, why it is a folktale, and to compare and contrast folktales.

Essential Question(s)
1. What is a folktale?
2. What elements make up a folktale?
3. How are folktales like/unlike real life?

Content Standard(s)/Benchmark-
(I plan to narrow these down if I have to, as I refine the lesson)

Common Core State Standard-

Writing- Research to Build and Present Knowledge

5.W.9- Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
a. Apply grade 5 Reading standards to literature (e.g., “Compare and contrast two or more characters,
settings, or events in a story or a drama. drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., how characters
interact]”).
b. Apply grade 5 Reading standards to informational texts (e.g., “Explain how an author uses reasons and
evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which
point[s]”).
Benchmarks-

Benchmark LA.5.3.2- Explain the relationship between plot events and how they build to the
resolution of the selection's primary conflict

Benchmark LA.5.3.4- Compare a literary element (e.g., characters, setting, plot) as it occurs in
two or more texts and explain how effectively it is realized in each text

Benchmark LA.5.3.7- Describe similarities and differences between characters and themes in
literary texts and personal or real world experiences

Benchmark LA.5.5.2- Use significant details and relevant information to develop meaning

Benchmark LA.5.5.3- Organize writing to exclude extraneous details and inconsistencies

Benchmark LA.5.4.1- Write in a variety of grade-appropriate formats for a variety of purposes

and audiences, such as: narratives that include plot, setting, characters, and a conflict, poems that
use figurative language to convey a theme or impression, reports incorporating a framing
question and including research from two or more sources, responses to literature, pieces related
to completing tasks, notes summarizing what they have read or heard, pieces to reflect on
learning and to solve problems

Prior Academic Knowledge and Student Assets

Students (5th graders) are familiar with analyzing pieces of literature, and looking for main ideas and
supporting details.

Academic Language Demands

I want students, by the end of the lesson, to be able to understand and define a folktale, the elements
within a folktale, and proper vocabulary to compare and contrast ideas and concepts from one
folktale to another, and to real life.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks

- Students will read a short folktale
- Prompted to point out the main idea, main characters, significant events, and moral of the
story
- Debrief on how to identify these elements
- Read another short folktale
- Identify the elements
- Write their own folktale
- Peer Review (Highlight the elements found)
- Exit Pass- Analyze another folktale, identify the key elements of the story, and
summarize

Assessment:
Formative assessment: Analyzing a folktale pre-instruction
Summative assessment/ Exit Pass: Analyzing and summarizing another folktale

Differentiation and Accommodations:

In my Fifth grade class there is one student who needs extra time to process concepts when posed
with a question. To accommodate him in this lesson plan, I will allow assessments to be completed
with small group aid and sufficient time for processing.

For struggling students: Slow in speaking, repetition, clues and connections are given, seating with
support, provide perfect position in the class, close to the board, constant communication, peer
support, additional assistance

Materials (optional):
- Folktale Print outs (3)
- Graphic Organizer for Folktale Elements
