Maritime Studies, offered by the Graduate School of Business at The
Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
As the region’s leading provider of logistics and maritime education,

About the
Graduate School of Business
Founded in September 2003, the Graduate School of
Business (GSB) of the Faculty of Business at The Hong
Kong Polytechnic University is the first graduate business
school in the history of Hong Kong tertiary education.
The GSB offers a wide spectrum of postgraduate
business programmes, with 18 taught postgraduate
programmes in Hong Kong and six in Mainland China.
Its programmes range from Postgraduate Diplomas
through Master’s Degrees, culminating in the Doctor
of Business Administration (DBA) degree, the first DBA
programme offered in Hong Kong since 1996.
The DBA, the School’s flagship programme,
aims to educate senior executives to become
“scholar-managers”. The programme has fostered
international collaboration with such world renowned
business schools as the IMD (International Institute for
Management Development) in Switzerland, the Sauder
School of Business at the University of British Columbia
in Canada and the Simon Graduate School of Business at
the University of Rochester in the US.
Our School also offers research degree programmes
leading to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. Five areas
of specialization are available, covering accounting,
finance, logistics and maritime studies, management,
and marketing.
In addition to research degrees and the DBA, the GSB
offers wide-ranging taught postgraduate programmes
to cater for managers and executives. Our MBA caters
for experienced managers who are ready to progress
to general management. It shares a common structure
with the programme offered in Shenzhen and Xi’an and
provides a wide range of electives, with an opportunity
to focus on Fashion Business, Financial Services, IT
Management and Innovation and Design Management.
To provide greater flexibility for students, some of our
MSc programmes are offered with both part-time and
full-time options. The MSc Programmes in Logistics
and Maritime Studies attract many quality candidates
from the shipping and logistics industry. The MSc in
China Business Studies, with its practical focus on doing
business on the mainland, draws a great number of
entrepreneurial candidates, as does the highly acclaimed
MSc Programmes in Management and Marketing.
The Master’s Programmes in Professional Accounting
and Finance are our well respected programmes, with
the Master of Professional Accounting programme
extended to online study through PolyU’s Hong Kong
CyberU. Also, to meet the emerging demand for expertise
in the asset management and investment industry, a
full-time day-time Master of Finance (Investment
Management) programme has been introduced to
nurture young talents for the market.
Our School is increasingly recognized internationally
as a leading provider of quality postgraduate business
education in the region. Our DBA is among the first
DBAs in the world to secure UK-based Association
of MBAs (AMBA) accreditation, while our MBA and
EMBA programmes are the first in Hong Kong and
Mainland China to be awarded AMBA accreditation.
Furthermore, we have been collaborating closely with
some of the top mainland universities, including Nankai
University, Renmin University of China, Xi’an Jiaotong
University and Zhejiang University, to offer government-
approved postgraduate business programmes.

Special Features
Carefully-Designed Curriculum
In addition to having wide consultations with
representatives from the industry, the needs of
potential students and their employers have been
carefully analyzed and addressed to when designing
this programme.
Multi-Disciplinary and Specialist Programme
This MSc programme is a multi-disciplinary and
specialist programme designed to attract students
from diverse backgrounds. As such the programme
benefits from the range of professional experience
that students can bring. The intellectual demands of
this programme will challenge students to integrate
and synthesize what traditionally are disparate
disciplines. There is also an array of elective subjects
that allow students to specialize in an area that would
normally be impossible to cover in depth within the
time constraints of a first degree.
Choice of Level of Awards
The majority of the students are expected to
complete the programme and obtain a Master of
Science award. A Postgraduate Diploma award is
available as an intermediate exit for those who do
not wish to, or cannot meet the intellectual challenge
for the Master’s award.
A Multitude of Teaching and Learning Approaches
A variety of teaching and learning approaches are
built into the programme to enhance students’
learning experience and effectiveness, including
lectures, seminars, presentation, case studies, role-
plays / simulation games and industrial visits.
Professional Recognition
• Graduates of the MSc in International Shipping
